Let’s begin by using your imagination for just a minute. Let’s imagine that you have a daily upload of $100.00 of energetic currency. Where are you spending your $100.00? Let’s step back a minute. The 5 Self-Healing Skills are: Belly Breathing Adequate Hydration Awareness Present Moment Living Balance Making Shifts Happen.com© 2 To understand the massive effectiveness of these skills, it is helpful to know about stress. Stress can occur at any level – physical, mental, emotional, spiritual. At the physical level, stress can be the result of trauma, (injury) lack of oxygen, lack of water, lack of nourishing food, and for most new parents, lack of sleep. There are many other causes of stress at the physical level and it is so simple and easy to fix two of these basic needs of your body. Your first Self-Healing Skill is Belly Breathing If I were to ask you to take a deep breath, how do you move to inhale? Do you lift your upper chest, neck and shoulders? That type of breathing actually stresses you! Your diaphragm (the large muscle that sits under your lungs) is actually your breathing muscle. To breathe naturally and in a way that reduces stress, use your diaphragm muscle. The correct way to breathe is to contract your diaphragm so that your lower abdomen moves out WITH YOUR INHALE. Then, on your exhale, your diaphragm relaxes and your lower abdomen moves inward. It is very helpful to count silently to 4 on your in-breath, and to 6 on your out-breath, pausing for a second or two between your inhale and exhale. Making Shifts Happen.com© 3 Your Second Self-Healing Skill is Water How much water do you actually drink during the day? Do you keep track? Do you only drink when you are thirsty? How much water is enough? Physical stress happens when your cells and digestive system don’t have enough water. Your dehydrated brain responds more slowly and you feel confused as well. The amount of water to drink is based on your body weight. The optimal amount of water – and that is pure water – is ½ ounce of water per pound of body weight. If math stresses you like it does me, just take your body weight, divide it in half and drink that many ounces per day. The equation would be body weight divided by the number of ounces. See, that was easy! 130 ÷ 2 = 65 Making Shifts Happen.com© 4 Your Third Self-Healing Skill is Awareness This skill may be the most challenging. If you are stressed, your awareness is that you are stressed. It is difficult to be aware of what else is possible when your mindbody is under severe, unrelenting stress.
