Monmouth is located in West-Central Illinois, 40
miles south of the Quad Cities and 16 miles east
of the Mississippi. There are two major highways
that pass through Monmouth: U.S. Highway
67 and U.S. Highway 34. Interstate 74, which
connects with Interstate 80 at the Quad Cities,
is only 15 miles away. A great deal of traffic flows
through Monmouth on a daily basis.
Monmouth Municipal Airport, billed as the
“longest continuously running airport in Illinois,”
offers excellent facilities for private aircraft.

A larger airport, the Quad Cities International
Airport offers a variety of commercial, passenger, and
freight services that serve the Monmouth community.
Two railroad lines operate in the Monmouth area.
Amtrak offers passenger service in Galesburg and
Macomb, both within 30 miles of Monmouth.
Burlington Northern/Santa Fe has offices
in Galesburg, operating a major switching
classification facility.
The Monmouth Shuttle, a bus service offered to the
public through Warren County Public Transportation,
runs in and around the Monmouth Area.
EDUCATION
Numerous educational opportunities are
available through the public schools of
Monmouth-Roseville District #238 and United
CUSD #304, a parochial school Immaculate
Conception School, preschools, and PASS Adult Education program. Warren Achievement
Early Intervention serves developmentally
disabled infants and toddlers from a four county
area. Monmouth is also proud of its four-year
private liberal arts college – Monmouth College.
The campus features a new 138,000-square foot
Center for Science and Business, a state-of-theart athletic center, distinctive architecture and
many historical landmarks. Monmouth is also in
the Carl Sandburg Community College District.

Activities are offered through the Buchanan
Center for the Arts, the local YMCA, Gibson
Woods, an 18 hole championship golf course,
the Strom Center, a recently renovated bowling
alley, and Citizens Lake, which offers camping, a
public swimming pool and fishing. Monmouth
also offers 11 parks with facilities such as a shelter
houses, picnic areas, playground equipment,
baseball diamonds, tennis courts, frisbee golf,
horseshoe pits, a covered stage, and play areas
for small children.

The Warren County Library, established in 1868,
offers over 83,000 volumes of adult fiction and
non-fiction, over 80 subscriptions to magazines,
and a unique children’s room with over 33,000
volumes. The library has videos, audio books,
large print books, public copy machine,
newspapers, and computers with internet
access. The Library is home to the Warren
County Genealogical Society and houses a
unique display of Lincoln memorabilia.

One of the biggest events in Warren County
is the Prime Beef Festival. Held annually for
over 60 years, this festival offers fun, food and
festivities for all to enjoy. On the Wednesday
after Labor Day the celebration begins with
a parade at 5:00pm followed by three days
of spectacular carnival rides, great food, free
nightly entertainment, children’s activities,
beef & swine shows, a car show, and nightly
grandstand events such as a figure 8 race and a
demolition derby.

The Maple Leaf Community Concert Series brings
world class entertainment to Monmouth performing
at the Dahl Chapel & Auditorium on the Monmouth
College campus. The concerts feature classical,
broadway, gospel, tributes to well-known groups
and a variety of other professional artists that bring
outstanding performances to the stage.

POINTS OF INTEREST
•The Warren County History Museum at 238
South Sunnylane. Enjoy a tour and view the large
display of antique farm tools and equipment
including a Pattee plow, Monmouth Plow, 1838
plow, and a Brown Planter. View the one room
school house, and Grandma’s room.
•Pioneer Cemetery, dating from 1831. (250 North
6th Street) Buried in this cemetery are the
grandparents of Wyatt Earp and veterans of the
Civil War.
•Holt House, the 1867 birthplace of Pi Beta Phi,
the first National Fraternity for Women. (402

•Stewart House, where Kappa Kappa Gamma
National Fraternity for Women was founded in
1870. (1015 East Euclid)

The Warren County courthouse, built in
1894. Warren County was named for General
Joseph Warren, the first officer killed in the
Revolutionary War. (Northwest Public Square)
•The Warren County War Memorial, immediately
south of the courthouse, was dedicated in 1998
and received first place in War Memorials of
America in 1999. The Civil War monument is
also located there.
•Abraham Lincoln Marker – This is the site of one
of Lincoln’s speeches during the famous Senate
campaign of 1858. (Corner of South 1st Street and
East 4th Ave.) You may also enjoy visiting the
Warren County Library, to view the Abraham
Lincoln exhibit.
•Ronald Reagan’s boyhood home from 1918 to 1919
is located at 218 South 7th Street. (Not open to the
public)
•Wyatt Earp was born in Monmouth on March
19, 1848. The Wyatt Earp birthplace is located
at 406 South 3rd. (Not open to the public)
