A Step Back in Time…
The Manor House
N
estled in the quaint countryside of
Virginia’s historic Westmoreland

Northern Neck, you will find General’s
Ridge Vineyard and Winery.
There to give you a
warm and gracious
welcome to the 100
acre plantation, are
owners Richard L.
(Rick) Phillips, Major
General USMC (Ret)

been the Phillips’ dream and passion to
explore the science, practice and study of
vineyard production.
Take a step back in time and stay in the
plantation’s Manor House which has graced
the property for 150 years. You will
remember special moments as you have a
cup of coffee on the front wrap around porch
as the sun rises over the vineyard or take a
simple stroll through the secluded grounds.
You will love the quiet evenings when you
can hear a symphony of night sounds or see
the magical lights of the fire flies as twilight
nears. Comfort awaits you when it’s time to
snuggle into one of the Manor House’s cozy
bedrooms.
Vineyard Views Cottage is a charming
two bedroom elevated cottage overlooking
the vineyard. Sip a glass of wine on the deck
as you gaze on the vines that produced the
grapes from which it was made. Recently,
Vineyard Views was mentioned in Coastal
Vineyard Views
Living Magazine as well as on CNN.com as
one of the 10 great wine getaways.
The Phillips are producing wines from
their 13 varieties of grapes and few
vineyards embody the seductive flavor of
the grapes grown on this plantation.
They are excited for you to see their

latest production, the newly constructed
“Somewhere in Time” wine tasting facility
(grand opening Spring 2011).

The Northern Neck
Some eateries and B&Bs, a gallery and a book
By Kathryn Murray
T
he Northern Neck is such a large
expanse with so many diverse
populations and locations, it’s hard
to know about it all. I find that to be true even
though my profession requires that I travel
far and wide quite regularly, which offers the
opportunity to find neat places, some old and
some new.
Over a year ago a friend of mine
introduced me to the owner/proprietor of
WideRiver Gallery in Colonial Beach. Since
then I’ve been there many times and have
developed real respect for this entrepreneur,
Connie Canby, who exhibits fine artwork—
selections that should satisfy most in search
of a special piece. Given 10 years living in
Manhattan taking advantage of the gallery
scene, I hardly expected to find such a place
on the Northern Neck.
The Gallery—part of the Espresso Coffee
Shop building (once the Esso gas station)—
offers changing exhibits of artists’ work on a
monthly basis. Ceramic work, jewelry,
woodworking abound, as well as paintings
and fine prints. Prices are reasonable so many
are able to work within a budget. Certainly,
this is a place to consider especially when
coming from DC or returning to Maryland.
And every 2nd Friday, year-round, galleries
and small shops are open for the evening with
refreshments regularly offered.
Quality diverse artwork changes monthly.
Right next door to the Gallery there is a new
business, a gourmet food shop—Tides Inn
Market—that opened this past year. The
young woman who runs the shop, (Caitlin
Davis) was trained at the Culinary Institute of
America and is the daughter of owners and
16
managers of an
affiliated B&B. This
little shop is a true
specialty shop with
soups, entrees and
appetizers as well as
breads and pastries.
Diagonally across
the street from the

for lunch or dinner. Seaside Restaurant offers
excellent Thai or French cuisine. (With a
successful Thai Restaurant in Bowling
Green, owner Upin Raungtriphop opened the
Colonial Beach location in mid-2009). I had
heard wonderful things about the food there,
so I just had to try it, and try it I did--many
times.
This article is not the place for a restaurant
review, but if you
enjoy Thai food or
would appreciate
fine French cuisine,
this should be a
destination. Since the
establishment is fairly
small, reservations are
encouraged, especially

months are much more
busy). You'll find that
Manager Noi Sing will make sure you'll have a
very enjoyable and tasty experience. (Open
Tuesday through Sunday.)
Travelling down the ‘Neck from Colonial
Beach, an interesting stop is the antiques
place named Fine Things. Located at the light
in Callao with perhaps 3000 square feet of
“stuff” to ponder, this place is fun. We’re not
talking high-end antiques, so don’t go there if
you are looking for that special $5,000 chair
to go with a table you have. Rather it is a
place where numerous vendors have
consigned items. This allows for a real
possibility of finding a great bargain. So take
your time and remember, look upstairs too.
Whether you are in the main house or in an
apartment, the Inn offers old-world charm in
a location where you can walk to restaurants
and amenities.
Lots of stuff and some real bargains, too.
Going a bit more southeast our last “onthe-’Neck” location is Fleeton Fields Bed &
Breakfast. Having heard it recommended by
friends, and wanting to know more about
Fleeton, I decided to invite myself to take a
look. Driving into town the sign says, I
believe, population 89. And everywhere you
look there is water to be seen.
Fleeton is charming—just remote enough to
be authentic—it hasn’t been overwhelmed by
too much progress. So rather than thinking that
this is out of the way, you might see this as the
center of your vacation universe. From this
location you can travel the Northern Neck for
day trips whether you are here for a long
weekend or for a week. The rooms are
charming, and filled with beautiful antiques.
During "season" you can experience the
gardens of beautiful
roses and everchanging perennial
blooms. Close to
Reedville, the boat to
Tangier or Smith
Island, a n d e a s y
driving distance to
Kilmarnock, it is
truly a quiet oasis to
call home.

Historic, charming, wonderfully located.
Although not a destination, an upcoming
book provides great insight into the history
and architecture of the Northern Neck. The
University of Virginia Press is distributing
the just published Historic Sites in Virginia’s
Northern Neck & Essex County: A Guide
(2011). Preservation Virginia, Northern Neck
Branch set out on this project about two years
ago. The result is now available to the public.
Introductory chapters set the scene for the
six chapters covering predominantly
pre-Civil War sites of King George,
Westmoreland, Northumberland, Lancaster,
Richmond and Essex counties. Twenty-six
maps and more than 400 photos provide
additional tools for using the Guide. You may
be surprised at all of the history that is right
outside your door as you drive through this
historic area and special part of the world.
timeless surrounding.
The last destination, but not the least is the
Essex Inn located in Tappahannock (just
across the river from the ‘Neck). New
innkeepers oversee a majestic, gracious
house in the historic section of
Tappahannock—a block from the
Rappahannock river. There are rooms both in
the main house and also four apartments in a
separate building. This smaller building was
once the laundry and has been converted.

W here Have All The Oysters Gone?
By Barbara Jean LeFon
W
hen Captain John Smith first
arrived in the Chesapeake Bay
during the early 17th century, he
noted such an abundance of oysters that it
made it dangerous to navigate his ship! Since
then, over the years there has been a steady
decline in the number of oysters harvested
from those same waters.
It has been said that the oyster population
of the Chesapeake Bay was once able to filter
the water of the entire Bay in about one
week! That was many years before these
tasty morsels began to drastically decline due
to over harvesting, habitat destruction and the
diseases of Dermo and MSX which
penetrated the oyster population. For
instance, habitat destruction was caused
years ago by large dredges being dragged
across the bottom of the waterways to capture
the oysters for harvesting. It was later learned
that the watermen were ripping up the natural
habitat that was helping to produce large
crops of oysters. MSX and Dermo are not
caused by viruses, but rather by a single cell
protozoa. Neither of the parasites is harmful
to humans. These diseases were first
identified in the mid-Atlantic in the 1950’s.
Dermo is native to the Chesapeake Bay and
usually kills oysters in the second or third
year. Apparently, MSX was introduced into
the region in the 1950’s when an attempt was
made to introduce a non-native oyster.
Oysters in the Northern Neck have been on
the decline since the early 1900’s. Many of
the area oyster houses, mostly family-owned
for generations, have had to supplement their
harvests with oysters shipped in from the
Gulf of Mexico. According to the
Environmental Protection Agency, it now
takes the population of Bay oysters a whole
year to filter the same volume of water that
was filtered in one week!
In the past Virginia was producing 7-8
million bushels of oysters a year. However,
recently the oyster harvest has been as small
as 20,000 bushels. As a result of the oyster
decline, the largest oyster processors in the
area have made significant investments in
attempting to establish an oyster hatchery
program and other aquaculture methods to
increase the production of oyster larvae
locally to help end its dependence on out-ofstate oyster larvae. The overseer of the
Northern Neck hatchery establishment is the
Virginia Institute of Marine Science.
Today, commercial oyster aquaculture,
private oyster gardening, the establishment of
oyster reefs and even the testing of nonnative species of oysters in our waterways are
all promising ways in which we are
increasing our native oyster population.
Many successful restoration projects are
showing that fewer oysters are dying from
disease and, together with oyster farming and
oyster reef building, are all combining to give
cause for an optimistic comeback of the
oyster population in Virginia and the
Chesapeake Bay.

Virginia’s Northern Neck…
Slow down, relax and hurry back!
By Captain Billy Pipkin
A
warm gentle breeze fills the air,
the sky begins to lighten and a
symphony of songbirds welcome
a new day. As the sun breaks over the
horizon, silhouettes of gulls can be seen
gliding above the calm waters. This is
how a day in ‘our world’ begins.
Virginia’s Northern Neck is surrounded
by water. You’ll find over 1,100 miles of
shoreline offering access to some of the
best fishing and boating on the east coast.
There are bald eagles, ospreys, ducks
and otters, oysters, clams and crabs. But
don’t forget our world renowned fishing
that has made this region famous for over
two centuries.
There are numerous species of fish and
other seafood available in our waters. The
upper rivers offer an array of fresh water
fish including catfish, perch, and even
large mouth bass. Within the tidal areas
of our rivers we find a greater variety
including croaker, spot, flounder, trout,
bluefish and striped bass.
The protected calm waters of the river
and inlets offer small boat owners the
opportunity to enjoy the rich yields of
our waters without worries of rough
water and wave action. Kayaking has
grown in popularity among naturalists,
birdwatchers, and now anglers. There is
nothing like the feeling of hooking a five
pound fish and having it pull your kayak.
The mouths of rivers in this region are
large. They offer many of the same fish
found upriver as well as species located in
the open waters of the Chesapeake Bay.
In the big water, additional fish on the
menu include, larger striped bass (up to
50 pounds), Bluefish in the 5-10 pound
class, cobia, and lesser known species
such as triple fin, pompano, porgy, tautog,
and sheepshead. Part of the joy of fishing
the open waters of the bay is the wonder
24
of what’s going to be found at the end of
suitable for tiny boats, we have several
U.S. Coast Guard approved charter boats
available that can take you to the fish.
Whether you spent the day exploring or
fishing, the rich golden hue of our sunsets
is a reminder of the many natural
treasures here in Virginia’s Northern
Neck.
Whether you’re exploring our waters
like Huck Finn, wetting lines from your
small skiff or chartering one of our sport
fishing charter boats, you are sure to find
a piece of ‘our world’ left in your heart.
Come for a visit, slow down, relax and
hurry back!

“Granddaddy Told Me”
By Steve Bonner
As we got in front of the Bay Trust, I
asked him if he knew what used to be in
its place? He didn’t so I told him it was a
used car lot when I was his age and prior
to that the Hazel Hotel. The Hazel Hotel
was a very well known spot right in the
center of town.
Next door is a service station owned by
one of my old school (and out of) buddies
Calvin Luckham. I told Dexter there used
to be a big brick home there but in the
1950’s that was torn down and replaced
with that station. A fond memory of that
was my grandmother arranging for me to
play the organ for the opening. Here I was
50 years later telling my grandson that
story.
We moved on down the street and I
pointed out the grocery store on the corner
that is now vacant but for years was one of
two (at times three) downtown grocery
stores.
I pointed out the building on the corner
of Waverly and Main where his mother
works and told him 60 years prior “her”
great-grandmother ran her florist shop in
that same building. Then he said the
magic words “I read that in your book”!
Front Cover of Steve’s Book
was glad to get my book on the
market about growing up in
Kilmarnock. I have to give this
publication most of the credit for inspiring
me and giving me the opportunity to write
an article each year. Then I have to thank
the readers that pass on great compliments
to the owners of this publication about
those articles.
One of the great things about being a
native and personally watching the town
grow, change and evolve is sharing that
with others. Each year I have to think
about what I can share with the readers of
this guide and today it came to me!
I was in the middle of town coming out
of a store when I noticed my grandson
Dexter walking down the street. Twelve
year old Dexter was walking from school
with two of his friends so I waited for
them to catch up to me.
I

building formerly Bonner Brother’s Store and Soda Fountain in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s.
Next I pointed to a building and said little boy growing up in Kilmarnock, Va.!
“That’s the movie theater” to which he Those small town events like today

become amazing memories to pass along.
So that put in place the opportunity for
me to tell him how my brother Tom and I
would go see a scary movie then see
which one could get out of the theatre
fastest and go hide down Waverly Ave and
wait to scare the other one. Didn’t matter
how many times we did it, we just jumped
out from a different bush, yelled and ran
home.
Dexter liked that today but more than
that, it was very special to me. Just maybe
if we have those kinds of walks more
often and I can let him relive my boyhood
town in his mind, one day he will tell his
children or a friend “Granddaddy Told
Me” and give them all the details about a
