VERBS - The Simple Predicates of Life
Basic Tenses - Past/Present/Future
Verbs will always be 1 of 2 types = Action or Linking/Being
1.) If action, verb can be:
a or b a.) Physical - kick, touch, see
b.) Mental - remember, think, dream (of the mind)
and
c or d c.) Transitive - Has a direct object - "who or what"
d.) Intransitive - does not have a direct object
Direct Object - who or what in regards to action verb and its
subject. It can be a noun or pronoun
Indirect Object - If a D.O. is present and answers to whom or
for whom **cannot be in a prepositional
phrase with 'to' or 'for'

Examples:
I remembered my late grandfather.
Peter gave Sue the ball for the game.
I thought about Peter.
I gave him my money.
I gave my money to him.
The extra credit gave Sarah a better grade.
***D.O. will always come after the verb
***I.O. will always be sandwiched between the S.P. and D.O.
***Not every sentence will have a D.O.
***You can have a D.O. and no I.O.
***I.O. can never be in a prepositional phrase (to/for)
I gave my heart to Zoro.

2.)Being/Linking Verbs - describes state of being via subject compliments
**If linking/being, look for Subject Compliments
Predicate Noun - I am a teacher. I am a very nice teacher.
Predicate Adjective - I am nice.
Linking List: am, is, are, was, were, will, feel, seem, become ('be' forms)
****Do not forget curve balls with SENSES (taste, smell, etc)
The cookies taste great.
The cookies are great.

Active vs Passive: in action verbs
Active: subject is doing the action
Passive: Subject has the action done to it 'by'
Mr. Stangler called the students.
The students were called by Mr. Stangler.
Verb Phrase: When more than one word acts as the simple predicate
1 or more helping verbs + main verb
main verb = guts
helpers: 'be' verbs, haves, shoulda, coulda, woulda
******Adverbs are never part of the simple predicate S.P.

More specific tenses of verb phrases:
Progressive: Repeated action of the present or past
Present Progressive: am/is/are + ing main verb. I am going.
Past Progressive: was/were + ing main verb. I was going.
'ing' main verb is called: Present Participle
Perfect: unique way of naming action of the past and sometimes future
Present Perfect: have/has + past participle I have finished.
Past Perfect: had + past participle
I had finished.
Future Perfect: will have/shall have + past participle
I will have finished.
