NEW VOLUMES IV.1-2 & IV.3 CORPVS CHRISTIANORVM CONCILIORUM OECUMENICORUM GENERALIUMQUE DECRETA The series Conciliorum Oecumenicorum Generaliumque Decreta (COGD) is intended to offer a better critical edition for the decrees of - Councils and synods recognised as ecumenical by one or more Churches, - general Councils of the Churches of one or more traditions, - Councils which have a greater importance in the history of the Churches themselves. Canonical reception, theological effect, the scholarly consensus, are therefore applied as the main criteria of a work based on scientific parameters and on philological principles: however, as well as each scholar who needs definitive editions, also the theologian can trace the proper approach of his discipline and confession. When finished, the series will consist of seven volumes, spanning almost two millennia of conciliar decrees, all of them critically edited, indexed and introduced by specialists. This unprecedented research program is conducted under the direction of Giuseppe Alberigo i.m. and Alberto Melloni, its results being published as a subseries in the renowned sources collection Corpus Christianorum (Brepols Publishers). (A. Thier, in: Zeitschrift der Savigny-Stiftung für Rechtsgeschichte: Kanonistische Abteilung, 97, 1 (2011), p. 506) “In short, university and seminary libraries may do well to purchase this new edition.” (Norman Tanner, in: Gregorianum, 95 (2014), Fasc. IV, p. 874-875) CONCILIORUM OECUMENICORUM GENERALIUMQUE DECRETA A. Melloni (ed.) VOL. IV.1-2: The Great Councils of the Orthodox Churches, From Constantinople 861 to Moscow 2000 NEW Tomes IV.1 and IV.2 of this volume comprise the critical edition – sometimes the very first critical edition – of the Councils of the Eastern Orthodox Churches, namely those sharing the profession of faith defined in the first seven Ecumenical Councils (ed. COGD 1). Among them one may find the Protodeutera (861), the Council of Constantinople of 879, the Tomos Unionis (920), the Local Synods of Constantinople against the SyroJacobites (1030) and against John Italos (1082), the Councils on ‘My Father is greater than me’ (1166), on the Filioque (1285) and on Palamas (1341-1351), the Synod of 1484, annulling the so-called union of Florence (ed. COGD 2), the Synods about Lucaris, the Panorthodox Synods of Jerusalem (1672) and Constantinople (1872), the Local Synods of Constantinople (1691 and 1755), and additional materials, like the Patriarchal decision of annulment of the Excommunications between Rome and Constantinople (paralleled in COGD 3). The first two tomes also include the first publication of five synodika of Orthodoxy: Georgian, Bulgarian, Serbian, Russian and the Greek synodikon with a new edition of the oldest surviving version of the latter (eleventh century), which was the basis for the subsequent translations. Moreover, the volume presents the Conciliar tradition of the Patriarchate of Moscow and of all Russias, including the Stoglav (1551), and the Councils of Moscow of 1666/7 and 1917/8 and more recent Councils of the 21st century. Tome IV.3, finally, presents the first printed edition of the June 2016 Council of Crete. TOME IV.1 Foreword – Editor’s Note – List of Abbreviations CONCILIA 861 Concilium Constantinopolitanum – F. Claves – Subsidia 3 THE FIRST COMPLETE INDEX OF WESTERN COUNCILS BELONGING TO THE FIRST SEVEN CENTURIES Ancient councils have been of the utmost importance for the development of ecclesiastical structures and institutions. In order to facilitate their study, the Clauis conciliorum occidentalium presents the enormous number of Western synodal documents of the first seven centuries in the form of an index: each council is given an entry of its own, indicating the most important scholarly literature, the history of the tradition of its records including a short summary or synopsis of their contents, and ancient and modern translations. In addition, also those councils are listed of which the records are lost. In those cases, the sources are presented from which it can be concluded that a council was convened. Whenever possible, the issues discussed by the bishops are outlined. Andreas Weckwerth studied Catholic Theology, Classics, and History; he obtained doctorates in Theology (2003) and Classics (2006). He is currently working as a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Bonn and as an associate lecturer at the University of Cologne. (Brigitte Basdevant, dans: Revue d'Histoire Ecclésiastique, 2014, 109/3-4, p. 954-955) "As usual for the famous Claves series, Brepols Publishers took excellent care of presenting a splendid publication."
