We follow internationally acclaimed Montreal band Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra, which has accepted a baby into its touring tribe. DETAILED SYNOPSIS Violinist Jessica Moss and singer/guitarist Efrim Menuck are struggling to balance parenthood with making music in their internationally acclaimed Montreal-based band Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra. They are one of a growing number of bands to have accepted an infant (Efrim and Jessica's son, Ezra) into their touring life. Making a living has never been more difficult for musicians: a downloading generation has shattered the economics of the music industry, and constant touring has become synonymous with economic survival. Touring with children is both costly and complicated, yet Jessica and Efrim, and fellow band mates Sophie Trudeau, Thierry Amar and Dave Payant, are determined to blend family life and being on the road with the band's deep political commitment. As SMZ perseveres in making art and an honest living, we follow Jessica as she discovers the parallel path that mothers can find themselves on while attempting to pursue artistic endeavours along with their peers. Against a backdrop of intense competition and rapid technological change, where corporatization of the cultural industries is challenging the very notion of freedom, and where the distinction between life and work is constantly blurred, the film follows a growing generation of globalized artists – struggling to remain “self made” in spite unprecedented economic precariousness. Like canaries in the coal mine, today’s artists are pioneers of the New Economy, where self-employment and self-promotion have replaced job security, and uncertainty becomes a way of life for all. Come Worry with Us! Press Kit 2 THEE SILVER MT. ZION MEMORIAL ORCHESTRA Born in Montreal in 1999, Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra has spent the last ten years playing stubborn and loud folkmusic across the world. Equally comfortable playing basements and large halls, and with a live show involving group singing, dual fiddles, contrebasse, drums, organ and distorted guitars, the band has headlined extensive tours across 24 countries, and has won over large audiences in Russia, Scandinavia, Central Europe, Greece, Eastern Europe, and North America Inspired by the regionalized international punkrock movement that filled our eardrums and dumb hearts when we were still just kids, the mt. zion band has tried to carry those same values forward into the beginning of this new and confused century. Trumpeting the virtues of community, perseverance and honest labor, Silver Mt. Zion has always privileged respect for its fans over quick monetary gain, and has managed to eke out a humble sort of musical independence since long before the phrase "indie-rock" became the casual buzzword that it is today. In practical terms, this means that we've spent most of the last 10 years on the road, crammed into vans and growing slowly, winning over one heart at a time. Some highlights from those long roads include multiple sold-out shows at historic venues like Paris' La Cigale theater, San Francisco's Great American Music Hall and London's La Scala, headlining slots at both the UK and American All Tomorrow's Parties festivals, and countless big city and small-town gigs that, despite modest advertising and media exposure, garnered packed audiences. Musically, we began as a primarily instrumental unit, but soon began incorporating group-singing into our songs. Lyrically and thematically, each of our seven records has concerned itself with one simple thesis- that while the world as we know it is broken, unjust and cruel, people are good creatures capable of astonishingly giving deeds, and the only sane reaction to contemporary despair is determination, thoughtfulness, and stubborn hope. As musicians, we come from varied backgrounds- Sophie, Thierry and Efrim all played in Godspeed! You Black Emperor, who made a big noise at the end of the last century and played a key role in thrusting independent Canadian music onto the international stage. Jessica and Thierry both played in Black Ox Orkestar, a band that fused traditional klezmer music with free-jazz and punk-rock to create a new and vital hybrid that defied easy categorisation. As players, we've been sought after to record and play with artists as diverse as Arcade Fire, Broken Social Scene, Basia Bulat, Lhasa de Sela, Eric Chenaux, Katie Moore, Socalled, Sam Shalabi, The Besnard Lakes, Vic Chesnutt, Grant Hart of Husker Du, Carla Bozulich, Hannah Marcus, Rhys Chatham and Pink Mountaintops. In the last few years, the band has also developed an intense working relationship with Patti Smith, functioning as her backing band at festivals across Europe and in Montreal, and future recording plans with Patti are currently in the works. As a band we now find ourselves in a strange and difficult place. While we've managed to carve out a toehold in this industry, times keep getting tougher. As is the case with most bands, the past few years have seen our Come Worry with Us! Press Kit 3 record sales plummet, as our old distribution networks try to realign themselves with the new digital reality. Meanwhile, the surging Canadian dollar has carved a huge chunk out of our American and European tour revenues, while the ongoing global recession has local bookers and promoters facing an ever more intimidating bottom line. We're confident that as a band we'll weather this storm, but we're coming to the realisation that we need to change the way we operate. Silver Mt. Her films have been screened and televised around the world, and have received more than 25 awards, including honours from the San Francisco International Film Festival, the Jerusalem International Film Festival, the Mannheim International Film Festival, Hot Docs, Les Rendez-vous du Cinema Quebecois and the Academy of Canadian Cinema. Painted Landscapes of the Times (1986), Motherland (1994), What If (1999) Undying Love (2002), No More Tears Sister (2005), and her dramatic feature, Family Motel (2007) are some of her credits. No More Tears Sister opened the 2006 season of POV on PBS. Her latest feature documentary, Malls R Us, premiered at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC – the second time Helene participated in The Canadian Front Selection. She is currently in production with Ground to Ground, a feature length documentary for CBC documentary channel about a new breed of social worker, making a difference in conflict zones, produced by Ravida Din (The NFB) and Natalie Barton (InformAction). She is a graduate of the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. Reviews and articles about Helene’s work have appeared in many periodicals, including Globe and Mail, National Post, New York Times, Newsweek International, Variety, Hollywood Reporter, La Presse, The Independent, BBC News Service, Hindu Times, and the Asian Tribune. Helene Klodawsky is a member of Doc Organization, the Writer’s Guild of Canada, Réalisatrices Équitables, and the Quebec Executive of the Director’s Guild of Canada. DIRECTOR STATEMENT After almost thirty years of documentary filmmaking, I am still most drawn to stories that explore the complex and passionate intersection of family and politics. Motherland: Tales of Wonder, my first feature-length documentary and films such as Undying Love, No More Tears Sister, and Family Motel, all explore peoples’ desire for intimacy against backdrops of dramatic life changing events such as war, exile or, impoverishment. In COME WORRY WITH US! I look at family in the context of changing gender roles, subversive art-making, and technological change. Working with Thee Silver Mount Zion, and growing to understand its “do it yourself” egalitarian ethics spawned many questions about the modern family and its awkward, sometimesmessy, relationship to the world of cultural production and social change. Few bands would expose themselves to such intense probing about gender and artistic survival, especially in their own backyard. Hence I am most grateful to Jessica Moss, Efrim Menuck and the rest of Silver Mount Zion for their willingness take me along for the provocative ride that COME WORRY WITH US! represents.
