THE OLD GLOBE
In 1599 the Lord Chamberlain’s
Men built a theatre called ‘THE
GLOBE’.
The globe was 30m in diameter and
made of wood. The stage was 1.5
high and in front of it was the pit,
an open area where about 700
spectators could stand. The walls of
the theatre contained three levels
with seats for about 2000
spectators.

THE NEW GLOBE
In 1613 there was a
at
the theatre during a play and
unfortunately the theatre was
completely destroyed. The
Globe was rebuilt the next
year but in 1644 it was
demolished.
However, that was not the end
of the Globe Theatre.
The American film director Sam
Wanamaker, had the ambition to
rebuilt the Globe Theatre. Many
people
contributed
money
to
Wanamaker’s project and in 1997
Shakespeare’s
Globe
Theatre
reopened, 200 meters from the
original site. It is smaller than the
original building with room for about
1800 spectators but from May to
October you can watch one of
Shakespeare’s plays just like it was
performed 400 years ago.
