This document provides informa on you will need to apply to the Prac cal Nursing Program offered at our Moorhead campus for a Spring 2017 start. The M State nursing programs are designed to prepare qualifi ed students for a career in nursing. Graduates of the M State Prac cal Nursing program may apply to the Advanced Standing Nursing program to con nue their educa on in nursing. Guidelines for Applying to the PracƟcal Nursing Program LocaƟon Moorhead To be considered for the M State Nursing programs, students must apply and be accepted to M State. Admission to M State For admission to M State, complete the online applica on at www.minnesota.edu/admissions. The applica on for the Nursing program is separate but can be completed at the same me. Assessment TesƟng Students who have not completed college-level English and/or collegelevel math and/or do not have recent* ACT or Accuplacer test scores are required to complete assessment tes ng prior to applying for the Prac cal Nursing program. • • Reading scores must be within the last three years. Math scores must be within the last two years. Students who need assessment tes ng should check www.minnesota.edu/assessment for assessment tes ng dates and loca ons. The Prac cal Nursing program applica on must be submi ed for an applicant to be considered for acceptance to the program. The online applica on is available through the link at the end of this document. (This document must be read and understood in its en rety.) Review of Applica ons will begin October 16, 2016. Applicants who meet all requirements for admission and provide all of their documents by this deadline will have the greatest opportunity to be accepted. PracƟcal Nursing Program ApplicaƟon If there are more eligible applicants than available spots by the priority deadline, eligible applicants with the highest entrance exam scores will be offered a spot first. Eligible applicants who do not get into the program due to the compe on for a limited number of available spots will be placed on the wai ng list. If an addi ona l spot becomes available, the student who was eligible to be accepted by the priority deadline with the highest entrance exam score will be offered the spot first. If you have transfer courses from another college, you must supply an official transcript sent directly to us from the college. Please allow three to six weeks for M State to evaluate your courses for transfer. Students must score at the “Proficient” competency level (58.6 percent) or higher on the Assessment Technology Institute Test of Essential Academic Skills (ATI TEAS). ATI TEAS V scores are valid for two years. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA Entrance Exam High School Status Math and English Requirements Nursing Assistant Requirement Preparation for the ATI TEAS: The TEAS focuses on verbal, math and science skills. For more informa on regarding the TEAS exam, including frequently asked questions, special accommodations and how to register, visit minnesota.edu/nursing/entrance-exam. High School Graduates are encouraged to register for college general educa on courses while they pursue acceptance into the program. High school grades of graduates are not considered for admission to the program. Current high school students must complete their Junior year before applying and supply a high school transcript with a 3.00 GPA or higher upon comple on of their Junior year. PSEO Students are ineligible to take core nursing program courses (that is, courses with a PNSG prefix.) GED completers need a score of 500 or greater on the GED. Applicants unable to obtain a score report may s ll apply; eligibility will be based on space availability in the program. Math scores on the Accuplacer/ACT must place the student into Math 1020 Intermediate Algebra or higher. Students tes ng into developmental math must complete the developmental course(s), with a C or better, to be eligible. Students must be eligible to take English 1101 College Wri ng. Students tes ng into developmental English must complete the developmental course(s), with a C or better, to be eligible. If you have coursework in progress, you should go ahead and submit the Prac cal Nursing program applica on to maximize your opportunity to be accepted to the program. Students may be condi onally accepted while courses are in progress, provided the courses are completed prior to program start. Your applica on will be reviewed again when grades become available. The following are means of demonstra ng experience: • Successful completion of a CNA course with within the last 5 years with a minimum grade of C or Pass. • Current, unencumbered CNA (current on the Nurse Assistant Registry for any state). • Proof of current employment as a Nurse Aid or Pa ent Care Technician. Applicants may a empt to test out of the CNA course if they have health care experience that they feel is equivalent to the work done by CNAs. Applicants are responsible for the costs and fees associated with the test-out process. Laptop Computer PROGRAM EXPECTATIONS CPR Minnesota Department of Health Background Check NaƟonal Background Check All nursing programs require students to have a laptop computer. The cost will be in addi on to the cost of tui on, fees and books. Computer required specifica ons are available at https://www.minnesota.edu/programs/nursing/laptop-requirement/ Students must provide an American Heart AssociaƟon Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support official cer fica on card prior to star ng core nursing courses. The cer fica on must include a hands-on tes ng component. Accepted nursing students are required to complete a Minnesota Department of Health background study four weeks prior to star ng nursing courses. A $30 fee will be assessed for processing the background study. Beginning June 2016, the DHS will also require fingerprin ng to accompany the background study. The fee for fingerprin ng is $9.10. The process for background studies and fingerprin ng will be included with acceptance literature. Accepted students who chose not to complete a background check will not be able to a end clinical courses or service learning opportuni es. All accepted nursing students are required to complete a na onal background check prior to star ng clinical experiences, even if they have completed one for employment. Na onal background checks are completed through Verified Creden als. Instruc ons and codes will be provided on the first day of class. The cost of the background check is $65 and is payable by credit card. Students are responsible for the cost. Accepted students who choose not to complete a na onal background check will not be able to a end clinical courses or service learning opportuni es. Proof of immuniza on (including yearly influenza vaccina on) is required by clinical facili es. Conscien ous objectors may not be able to complete clinical courses at the discre on of the clinical facili es. Health Forms Students are required to submit a completed Health Division Health form with required documenta on at least two weeks prior to star ng core nursing courses. Influenza vaccina on documenta on will be required by the end of September, once vaccines are available or prior to star ng clinical for spring starts. Completed health forms and immuniza on documenta on are due to the nursing lab assistant on each campus two weeks prior to the start of classes. STUDENTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO KEEP COPIES OF ALL DOCUMENTS (HEALTH FORMS, IMMUNIZATIONS, CPR, CNA) SUBMITTED. Students who become out of sequence will be required to resubmit all documentaƟon.
