Dear, wonderful, amazing friends—
For the past 5 years I have had the
honor and privilege of being your
president and part of your lives. While
my “reign” is finally coming to a close,
I want you to know how much I love
this community and assure you that I
have no intention of disappearing. I will
continue to be part of the board this
coming year as the past president and
will now happily focus more attention
on my commitment to work with Alan
Jacobs on the newsletter and as the
Membership Committee Chairperson.
Plus, I am pretty sure there may be a
few more students left for me to
mentor—hint, hint!
How can I begin to thank all the current
and past board of director’s members
over the past 7 years that I have served
with for their time, dedication and
support for this community?! I have
learned so much from them and from all
of you—Thank you and bless you.
Also, many thanks to Rabbi Jay and
Judy, Deborah Schluter, “my partner in
time” Jim
Gustafson
and to Ben
Lindner for
being not
only our
Sukkah
Angel but apparently my personal
Angel as well!
Change is inevitable, change is good
and change is sometimes
uncomfortable. I hope that we can all
support Ben
Lindner, Steven
Foster-Wexler,
Rachel Lemas,
Lester Friedman
and Naomi Hall to
feel comfortable, supported and
appreciated for their dedication to the
JCCO.
One last thing to share-- Most of what I
know about being Jewish, I learned
here, at Shalom Bayit. The 3 laws from
the torah that I strive to practice (613
are kind of a lot to remember) are the
laws pertaining to love: Love Adonai,
Love your neighbor as yourself and
Love the stranger. I was once a stranger
to this land and this community loved
me. I have been Jewish all of my life
but here I have learned how to truly love
Adonai’s creation. And, because I truly
love all of you, my heart is always full
and I can love my neighbors and myself.
With Love & From Love,
Alice
A note from Our Rabbi…
What a joy to celebrate 15 years at JCCO/Shalom Bayit!
From the first service in the basement of the Methodist Church on a cold winter
evening in December of 1999 to Zion Lemas’ Bar Mitzvah, our Community Seder,
Zoey Cantor’s Bat Mitzvah and my Quinceanero which we have celebrated just in
the last 2 months,……and everything in between!
So much love, so much joy, so much kindness, so much learning by all of us! I
have had the honor to hold newborn babies and to wash the bodies of people I
knew and respected.
I can’t count the times I’ve been able to visit folks that were sick and perhaps
cheer them a bit. I have been privileged to marry people and then see their
children growing and blossoming before my eyes. I’ve been to dance recitals,
track meets, football games and baseball games to see our kids excel – and we
have had some serious excelling!
All this is not to deny a few rough spots, and that I
do worry about the future – but it’s been mostly
good.
It has been a singular honor and joy to have been
your Rabbi for the past 15 years.
Blessing us as a Community with leadership and
vision for the next chapter of the JCCO/Shalom
Bayit….
Sent with Blessings,
R’ Jay

Sisterhood News and Updates...
1. Sunday, June 7, 2015 is the 23rd Annual
"Song of Miriam" Awards Brunch. As
always it is being held at the Mittleman
Jewish Community Center in Portland.
This year's Shalom Bayit's honoree is
Naomi Hall. Naomi has given so much
of her spirituality, intelligence and love
to our congregation and is so deserving
of this honor.
A Big Thank You to…..
A big thanks to Inez Shapiro for hosting the last Book Club. We had a good turnout and a
real nice discussion about People of the Book. We only got off topic (mostly to "kvel"
over her adorable granddaughter, Reed) a few times.
NEXT BOOK CLUB DATE: June 28, 2015
BOOK TO READ: The Dove Keepers, by Alice Hoffman.
Please don't prejudge this book by the poorly executed TV miniseries recently broadcast.
The book is good!
If you are interested in hosting this book club date, please let me know. Once, I have a host,
I'll send out an official evite.
Don't forget June 7th is the Song of Miriam Award Brunch in Portland. Both Shalom Bayit
and Temple Beth Tikvah will be honoring deserving women. If you're interested in attending,
seats at the respective tables are still available.
Looking forward to seeing you ALL soon,
Ellyce & Jerri
Wonder Woman...
May 18 2015
I love strong Jewish women.
You could say it started with one named Betty Lou Munk — I call her “Mom” — who in fact grew up Christian on a dairy
farm in Paris … Ohio (Jewish population: 0). That was long before my mother ever dreamed of trying to make a brisket,
or wondered whether I would become a lawyer someday, or tried to pronounce “baruch” with the proper “chhhhhh.”
She met my father and converted in the 1970s, then proceeded
to rise to a variety of leadership roles with Women’s American
ORT, became president of the local Hadassah and Sisterhood
chapters in Canton, Ohio, and received national recognition for
her efforts.
The truth, she said, is that her involvement with these Jewish
women’s groups started because she just wanted to meet other
people.
“I wanted to become active in the Jewish community and learn
and make friends with other Jewish women,” my mom told me
recently. “I didn’t know any other Jewish women, other than my
mother-in-law, and she died right after we got married.”
But once she got involved, she couldn’t stop. Like so many Jews
the world over, when she saw ways to contribute to making her
community better, she couldn’t help herself. It’s called tikkun
olam, the commitment to help heal the world.
So my mom helped raise money for Israel with Hadassah, supported the local religious school as part of Sisterhood and
welcomed newcomers to our congregation as part of the membership committee, all while working as my dad’s
secretary and raising three boys. Along the way, she demonstrated to me all that a Jewish woman — a Jewish person —
can be, and that there is so much more to it than simply lighting candles on Shabbat and lending a lovely voice to
blessings. (Although she did those things, too.)
While the women in the Torah famously are described as playing second fiddle to men, that isn’t Mom’s style. When my
dad stood to say Kaddish for his father, my quiet but equality-minded Reform mother was right by his side. That is, until
the presiding Conservative rabbi informed her that she couldn’t join the minyan because she was a woman and “didn’t
count.”
“I said, ‘I beg your pardon?’ ” my mom still recalls.
She didn’t make a scene, because that’s not her way. But she’s always let it be known that in fact, she does count in so
many other ways. I’ve always been proud of my mom for her passion — both for her family and her faith — and I see her
as a prime example of what the Book of Proverbs describes as a “woman of valor”: “Wherever people gather, her deeds
speak her praise.” I consider her a mirror of the larger sisterhood of women in our Jewish community — bold, brave and
forward-thinking — the kinds of women spotlighted in this issue of TRIBE.
Sometimes their work appears truly Herculean, like that of Carol Koransky, the longtime leader of the Valley Alliance for
The Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles, whose role makes her responsible for half the Jewish community of
Greater Los Angeles. She has made a career of finding creative ways to unite these vital members of our community.
Then there’s Lisa Lillien, whose goal is to harness modern media to help you better your body. Her alter ego, “Hungry
Girl,” has become a hugely popular presence online, in print and on TV, spreading the gospel of better eating (and living)
to millions.
And there’s Johanna Stein, a Jewish mom for the 21st century who’s become an author and Internet sensation by
teaching us all how to take things a little less seriously. Because, as she points out, if your 4-year-old telling you that
your tummy looks like a bagel isn’t funny, what is?
And that’s just the beginning of how you’ll learn that two X chromosomes can be better than one — at least for this
issue.
