The 66th Annual Rotary Club of Bernardsville Track Meet May 19th 2016 Bernards High School Stadium SCHOOLS Bernardsville Middle School Frelinghuysen Middle School, Morristown Ridgedale Middle School, Florham Park Borough School, Morris Plains Gill St. Bernard’s, Gladstone Assumption School, Morristown St. Vincent de Paul School, Stirling Far Hills Country Day School School of Saint Elizabeth, Bernardsville The Rotary Club of Bernardsville Track Meet Committee Matt Scalaro, Terry Berger, Brad Jenkins, Cheryl Delgado, Tim O’Donovan and George Burd This is Rotary Rotary International is an association of Rotary clubs worldwide. It’s made up of more than 34,000 Rotary clubs in over 200 countries and geographical areas. The members of these autonomous clubs are called Rotarians, and they form a global network of 1.2 million business and professional leaders, all volunteering their time and talents to serve their communities and the world. Individual Rotary clubs, in turn, belong to the global association called Rotary International. Rotarians are united to serve mankind. The Rotary Club of Bernardsville was founded in 1928 and consists of a cross section of local business, corporate, and professional people living or working in the surrounding municipalities. We are members of New Jersey District 7470, which includes 54 Clubs in northern New Jersey with over 1300 Rotarians OBJECTIVES The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and in particular to encourage and foster: 1. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service. 2. High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian to their occupation as an opportunity to serve society. 3. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business, and community life. 4. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideas of service. CONTRIBUTIONS & SERVICES HIGHLIGHTS IN OUR COMMUNITY • ADOPT-A-HIGHWAY - A service activity where we are responsible for keeping a section of Route 202 in Bernardsville clean by conducting quarterly cleanups. • MEDICAL ALERT – A program that puts emergency phone dialers into the homes of the elderly and infirm at very nominal cost. When a button on the pendent worn around the neck is pressed, it calls the Police Dispatcher, who will then contact the appropriate emergency service to get help for the person. The Visiting Nurse Association of Somerset County is responsible for finding those in our community who are in need for this service. • TRACK MEET - For Sixty-six years we have run a track meet for middle school children from several counties. • BLOOD DRIVE - A collaborate effort between Keller Williams Realty and the Rotary Club of Bernardsville. • SCHOLARSHIPS – The Rotary Club of Bernardsville awards a $1,000 scholarship to a male and a female senior student at both Ridge High and Bernards High. The school selects the winning students. • OUTSTANDING STUDENT AWARD – Every year we provide a gift to outstanding Middle school students at both Basking Ridge and Bernardsville Middle Schools. • DICTIONARY PROJECT – Annually, The Rotary Club of Bernardsville purchases dictionaries and presents them to 3rd grade students HIGHLIGHTS WITH OTHER CLUBS IN OUR DISTRICT • ROTARY YOUTH LEADERSHIP AWARDS - Every year our Rotary District 7470 runs a weekend workshop at Drew University for high school students who have demonstrated leadership skills. We raise the money to send two students from Ridge High and two from Bernards High. HIGHLIGHTS WITH ROTARY INTERNATIONAL • POLIO PLUS – in 1985 Rotary International made a commitment to eradicate Polio, still a lifethreatening disease in three countries. This was to have been accomplished by the year 2000. Over 300 million dollars have been raised and the disease has been eradicated in all but three countries. The countries that still have Polio have been wracked by civil war or political strife making it often hazardous and difficult for Rotary and the UN to enter the country to vaccinate the children. • YOUTH EXCHANGE - By reciprocal agreement with other Rotary International Districts, thousands of high school students spend a school year in another country. This year our District hosted 6 students from Belgium, France, Germany, India, South Korea and Spain. • AMBASSADORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS – The Rotary Foundation provides over 1200 scholarships each year to college students for a year abroad, far more students than many of the well-known scholarships such as Pell, Rhodes, and Fulbright. In the past twenty years The Rotary Club of Bernardsville has sent four local college students to participate in this program.
