July Newsletter 2016 2030 Wallace Rd. NW Salem, Oregon 97304 Parks and Recreation Month In an ongoing effort to provide our WindSong families and others more education regarding the Montessori Inspired Lifestyle® to dementia care, I thought it was relevant to add the information below (http://www.alzheimers.net/2014-05-27/montessorimethod-dementia/). This article outlines the connection between the Montessori Approach of the early 20th century and how it apples to children and the way it now is also applied to those with memory loss. Canada Day Developed in the early 20th century, the Montessori method of teaching holds that when you’re working with children, you must consider their needs and capabiliJuly 1 ties in concert. What do they like to do? What are they able to do? The balancing act World UFO Day the teacher performs centers on not challenging the students – you don’t want them to get frustrated and give up – but rather, making the task a little beyond their comJuly 2 fort zone, so they still have the opportunity to learn and improve. The same is true for Independence those with Alzheimer’s. July Birthdays! Day (U.S.) July 4 Grange Day Ralph Presleigh ~ July 6 July 9 Reine Falkowski ~ July 10 Ventriloquism Week Karina Barquinero ~ July 11 Myrtle Harris ~ July 14 Bill Wahl ~ July 17 Fred Chambers ~ July 20 Mike Earl ~ July 22 One way to think about why the Montessori method is gaining traction with Alzheimer’s caregivers is this: Montessori teachers create lessons and activities specifically designed to engage the senses. The more ways students are given to connect with the world they’re learning about for the first time, the more their brains become engaged, which means more opportunities for the new information to become longterm memory. The Montessori method of caregiving has a very similar goal: engaging the July 13–16 senses in order to help Alzheimer’s and dementia patients and loved ones rediscover Nelson Mandela the world around them. Providing the most effective care means maximizing the opportunities these patients have to reconnect with a world they’re losing access to. International Day Though a patient may become withdrawn or paranoid as dementia advances, in many cases, their long-term memories will be largely well-preserved. The MontesJuly 18 sori method is about providing ways to connect with those memories. The positive Tell an Old Joke attitudes and personal touch that are hallmarks of the Montessori method help caregivers maximize their loved ones’ opportunities to reconnect with pleasant events of Day the past, and to re-experience the accompanying positive emotions. Book Recommendations by Fred Review of Robert Service Poetry: The Cremation of Sam McGee and The Shooting of Dangerous Dan McGrew These are two of my very favorite poems all written by Robert W. Service, both in England. He moved to Scotland at the age of five. His family reunited in Glasgow. He wrote his first poem on his 6th birthday. He was educated in the best schools in Scotland where his interest in poetry grew alongside his desire for travel and adventure. He eventually travelled to Western Canada and became a cowboy in the Yukon Wilderness. He travelled throughout his life to Hollywood, Oakland, Cuba, Alberta, Paris and Louisiana. His travels continued throughout to fuel his writings. He eventually ended up in a 2 room schoolhouse in the Yukon. Here is the first Stanza of The Cremation of Sam McGee: There are strange things done in the midnight sun By the men who moil for gold; The Arctic trails have their secret tales That would make your blood run cold; The Northern Lights have seen queer sights, But the queerest they ever did see Was that night on the marge of Lake Lebarge I cremated Sam McGee. Enjoy all of Robert W. Service writings! Fred Chambers, Community Member, WindSong at Eola Hills Life Enrichment Great things are happening here at Windsong! Loud, crowded fireworks displays are no fun for pets, who can become frightened or disoriented by the sound. Please resist the urge to take them to Independence Day festivities, and opt instead to keep them safe from the noise in a quiet, sheltered and escape-proof area at home. During fireworks animals should stay inside. This time of year more animals show up at the shelter lost after the Fourth of July. The second session in our monthly Montessori Training Series for families and others Please contact Amy Israel to reserve the Private Dining room near the entry of the building for private gatherings.
