Edition 2 | September 11th, 2015 Message from our Principal Last week staff were invited to a special tour of the new building site and it was an exciting experience! Though still very much in rough form, we were able to visualize spaces and the scope of the facility. As the project progresses, and in particular interior design elements are released, I’ll be eager to share them with the BES community! Mr. Doug Savage With resources and information becoming increasingly web-based, it can be challenging to keep track of how to access various sites. Milford had developed a “parent portal” accessed through the district web page (resources link) that includes access to Progress Book, EZPay, the district calendar, and other often referenced resources. The specific link to the parent portal is: http://www.milfordschools.org/services-and-programs/. With limited parking due to construction, we have decided to split winter parties into two dates for this school year. Parties for grades 4 thru 6 will be on Wednesday December 16th, and parties for grades K thru 3 will be on Thursday December 17th. Parties begin at 2:15 each day. Special thanks to the many parents that have worked diligently to offer this Friday’s “BES Color Jam.” The fall carnival has been such a great success in past years, and the PTO has done a tremendous job in offering an alternative activity for this school year. My apologies for being unable to attend, as my youngest daughter is exhibiting her first project at the county fair this week - Dad needs to be there for support! The Ohio Department of Education has recently released the new state testing information. More information will be forthcoming as we develop testing schedules and dates. Enroll today for Spanish classes! Why learn Spanish? • Starting a second language early will enhance reading abilities and general literacy in t he first language. • Students who study a foreign language for four or more years tend to score higher on t he verbal section of the S.A.T. • Children who learn anot her language demonstrate better focus and multit asking skills. Learning a second language is excellent exercise for the brain. Some studies even suggest being actively bilingual helps reduce t he risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. • It’s the second most popular language in t he world and, according to researchers, by 2050 t he United States will be t he largest Spanish speaking countr y in the world. • By the time today’s children enter t he workforce, the ability to speak Spanish fluently will greatly improve their resume and employability. Recruiters and hiring managers already understand that t he need for bilingual English and Spanish-speaking employees has grown; wit hin a decade, demand for workers who speak bot h languages is likely to increase even further. • Foreign language classes are a very stringent requirement for colleges and universities; learning Spanish during childhood will make high school Spanish classes much easier. Good grades in high school Spanish are likely to make quite a difference on college applications. SPANISH CLASSES AT BOYD E. SMITH ELEMENTARY!
