Looking Ahead L E T T E R F R O M T H E G E N E R A L M A N AG E R D E A R RA I L S I D E F R I E N DS , I'm hoping the skies will clear and the sun will shine fairly soon, making way for springtime. It’s good to welcome members of the Railside community back to the Club after a long winter and to see them excited about another golf season. I hope I run into each of you soon. A quick overview of things to come at Railside in the next few weeks and months: 25th Anniversary - I mentioned in the January newsletter that Railside is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. Our entire team is looking forward to celebrating with a special, members-only event. The event – Casino Night! will take place on Friday, May 13. Please mark your calendars! Events Calendar - Our 2016 Events Calendar is now online. This calendar details all social events currently planned for the New Year, including our Euchre Tournament, Easter Brunch, Mother’s Day Brunch, and the Railside Carnival. Make sure you mark these events on your calendar. All events will require an RSVP. Holiday Parties - Believe it or not, Donna and team are already booking for 2016 holiday gatherings. A lot of the folks who celebrated with us in 2015 have reserved their space for 2016. If you or your business is looking to host a holiday gathering near the end of the year, make sure you connect with Donna to learn more. Easter Brunch - Easter is on March 27. If you have not made your reservation, please do so by calling Joy at 616.878.1140 or email at [email protected] Junior Golf - Railside will offer our Junior Golf program again this year. As you begin to make your summer plans, be sure to keep this in mind. The Golf Shop will distribute information in the near future. Keep an eye out for it! Thank you – as always – for your continued support of Railside Golf Club. Eager to see you in the next few weeks and months as we host some fun social events for you and your friends. Best, Jim Bultema General Manager 3 From the Pro R A IL S ID E F R I E N DS , The off season is nearly done! I suppose that happens when your golf season officially ends in late December (thank you, weather!). Our PGA Professional Staff traveled to Orlando, Florida, for the PGA Merchandise Show in late January. It was an opportunity for us to see the latest advances in golf balls, woods, irons, and apparel. The biggest point of emphasis this year? The putter. The USGA’s recent update to the Rules of Golf, specifically Rule 14-1b, bans anchoring the club, but there are a lot of options for those of you who may be looking to replace your long or mid-length putter. The most popular option appears to be a counterbalanced putter which places more weight near the grip end of the club to balance the weight in the head. Our Golf Shop will feature many of these new putter options this spring, so please stop in and let us help you select the proper putter. If you are thinking of keeping your current long or mid-length putter and wish to see different gripping options that fall within USGA’s permitted gripping section, please let us assist. Remember, Rule 14-1b is not an equipment rule. Conforming long and mid-length putters remain permissible provided they are not anchored. In other news, the 2016 golf events schedule is now available on the club’s website. Please make sure to plan your spring, summer, and fall schedules accordingly. We are excited to kick things off with our annual Ladies’ and Men’s League Sign Up event, held on Thursday, March 24 6pm-8pm. This is will be your early opportunity to sign up for league and to take advantage of our Titleist Pro V1 golf ball promotion, which offers you a free dozen golf balls when you purchase three dozen. A great addition to this year’s sign up night is a complimentary Rules of Golf Seminar from 7pm-8pm. Jeanne Myers from the Golf Association of Michigan will be here to help you brush up on a few common rules as you prepare for the upcoming tournament season. So, please plan to stay for this interactive and informative presentation. Please contact our team if you have any questions, need your clubs for a golf getaway, or are looking for assistance with a tee time in a warmer climate over the next few months. We are happy to help! -Matt and the Railside Golf Staff Meet Emily Rohdy RAILSIDE'S NEWEST GOLF PRO Emily Rohdy has loved the game of golf since the first time she picked up a club from her grandparents at the age of two. Most recently, Emily was at Kent Country Club as the Assistant Golf Professional where she was instrumental in growing the juniors and ladies’ golf programs. She has expertise in customer service, inventory management, marketing, and tournament operations. Emily’s ultimate goal is to inspire current and new members to fall in love with the game of golf. From the Superintendent Greetings Members, As we hit the final stretch of winter and look forward to the upcoming golf season a few questions come to mind: 1. When will the golf course be open? It depends on weather and the amount of snow we have on the ground, particularly on holes 4, 5, 6, and 8. Once those holes are clear of snow and debris, we can open the golf course for play. (I'm excited, are you?!) 2. Do we have any ice damage? This is obviously on our minds as we venture through winter. However, this winter has been really good in this area--at this time, we are ice-damage-free! The greens, tees and fairways all look to be in great shape. 3. Do we have any upcoming projects? The answer is YES. We’ve got a few small projects in store; sodding the bunkers on holes 6 and 16, cutting down select (dead) trees, grinding old stumps on the property, new landscape behind hole 2 and adding more natural areas in the out-of-play areas. We’re hoping these updates will add to the already beautiful landscape. That's it for now! I hope everyone is as excited for the golf season as I am...I look forward to seeing you on the course. All the best, Jeff Smith, Golf Course Superintendent 5 EVENTS Check Out Our Upcoming Events Railside is hosting several special events for members and guests over the coming months.
