WELCOME TO A NEW SEASON
With Ayad Akhtar’s award-winning play, we open
the Arts Club Theatre Company’s 52nd season,
the 18th at the Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage.
Disgraced will be the 97th production since this
beloved former movie theatre opened in the
fall of 1998 and the 570th since the company
was founded in 1964. During that period, our
subscription numbers have steadily increased,
and we now have over 10,000 loyal subscribers
to the Stanley series. When you include subscribers to our Granville Island Stage
and the soon-to-be-opened Goldcorp Stage at the BMO Theatre Centre on West 1st
Avenue, our subscribers exceed 17,000. Thank you to all of you.
Ayad Akhtar is an actor, screenwriter,
novelist, and playwright who challenges
us to question our assumptions about
race and religion; a man of many
talents and daring insights. His first
novel, American Dervish, explored the
complexity of the Muslim religious
experience, and Disgraced centres on
a Muslim man’s self-deception—Amir
Kapoor, a high-powered corporate
lawyer, has been hiding his Muslim
origins from his Jewish bosses at work.
In an interview, Mr. Akhtar stated,
“I wanted to write a play that would
have a tragic arc, that would move an
audience to pity and terror... (with)
both tears and raucous laughter.”
Disgraced is directed by long-time Arts
Club friend Janet Wright. This season
will also see Valerie Easton, who has
choreographed many of our musicals
take the helm with A Christmas Story,
The Musical. In the new year, Sarah
Rodgers, who has directed a number
of our touring shows, will oversee the
stage adaptation of Jane Austin’s Pride
and Prejudice with a cast of 17 playing
the iconic parts. Our Literary Manager,
Rachel Ditor, directs Good People in
the spring, and Bill looks forward to
collaborating with Valerie and Musical
Director Ken Cormier on Billy Elliot.

This season, we’re also celebrating
the 10th year of our LEAP (Learning
Early About Playwriting) series—a
dynamic, intensive program developed
to hone the skills of teen playwrights.
Participants learn the basic principles
of writing a play and receive feedback
from theatre professionals. The program culminates in a three-day festival,
where all participants will have their
plays workshopped by professional actors and presented to the public on an
Arts Club stage. Applications are now
open and must be submitted by October 31, 2015. If you are a young writer,
or if you know someone this program
would benefit, apply at artsclub.com/
participate today. If you’re no longer a
teen, you can still participate! Please
consider making a tax-deductible donation to help the Arts Club keep this
wonderful youth program growing and
serving this community. Every contribution helps and we couldn’t do this kind
of work without your support.
Thanks for joining us for this
performance and welcome to another
season!

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR’S CIRCLE
The Arts Club Theatre Company relies on your philanthropic support to ensure the strength and vitality of the company. As a non-profit
arts organization, the Arts Club could not exist without the generosity of our individual donors. Ticket sales cover only a portion of our
production costs, so we rely on community gifts to close the gap. Please consider joining us by becoming a member of the Artistic
Director’s Circle today. Contact Parmida Zarrinkamar, Manager of Individual Giving, at 604.687.5315, ext. 261, for more information.
