Report from Golf Queensland Representative – Mr Peter Castrisos
Peter presented the following on behalf of Golf Queensland:

Congratulations to B&D for a good year and running an efficient organisation. Throughout
the State B&D is one of the better run districts.

Golf Qld have introduced a club support program with David Webber, Club Support Manager.
David’s job is to help clubs throughout the State with any problems they might have.
Support initiatives are on the GQ website. For example, if clubs reach financial difficulty
David’s job is to assist those clubs before they get into serious financial problems. He is also
available to help clubs formulate strategic plans, business plans, governance and succession
planning.

GQ is in the process of re-writing its strategic plan proposed to be in place next year and are
talking to districts and clubs.

Strategic Plans – Golf Aust are in the process of creating a revolution in golf administration
throughout Australia. It is in its infancy and GQ have a representative on the steering
committee – all information has not been made public at this stage. Unitary Model – which
is one governing body with different branches of that governing body. There will be no more
Golf Qld; Golf Qld will be a division of GA. No details are available yet, just a broad outline.
All GQ staff will be employed by GA although the GQ board will still exist. There will be a
relevance for the current body – GQ. Some of the benefits for this initiative – economy of
scale; GA will create the programs and GQ will deliver them, eg: MyGolf. It is anticipated
there will be no change to current District bodies. GA also believe that by commercialising
the GA brand they can raise an additional $15m for golf over a three year period. With that
money they believe that they can then employ development officers, junior development
officers, etc. throughout the State so that we can grow the game. This money is not available
at the moment. All the different bodies are trying to chase sponsorship, with one
organisation it will be much more efficient and successful. This will be a slow and
consultative process. GA have to convince the Board of GQ who have to convince the Boards
of all the Districts. Late 2017 is the date penned for this change occur.

Qld Open is on again at Brookwater on August 20-23. GQ will be calling for volunteers in
June/July. The more volunteers the better, we were short of volunteers last year. Over 8,000
spectators were attracted last year and it is hoped that more spectators will be attracted this
year. Terrific response from Channel 9 in 2014. Overall it was a great initiative – engaged
with over 2,000 school children.

Ladies Let’s Golf – Brisbane Golf Club has been successful with this program. Peter
encouraged all clubs to consider the initiative to bring ladies into golf and in turn, grow
membership of golf clubs. Information is on the GQ website.

Rules and Handicapping. Our handicap system has been recognised as one of the better
handicap systems in the world. R&A and USGA are looking at the changes that we have made
with the handicapping system. Australia has the highest number of competitive rounds
played in the world. Our handicap system has proved to be a fairer system with most people
playing on a higher handicap than 5 years ago. Rules - State level rules exam this Saturday
and Sunday. Encourage that if can’t attend this exam Peter is happy to organise through the
District. Those that excel in this exam are encouraged to do the State level exam and then
move on to become a rules official at tournaments.

Golf Qld Board is operating well – Judy Logan is on the Board and represents the ladies and is
doing a fantastic job.

7.

Succession Planning – is all about encouraging inviting people who have certain skills and
abilities, other than those currently on the committee/board, to sit on subcommittees of
Boards.

Rules – R&A and USGA are currently totally re-writing the rules of golf – ‘simplifying’ the
language and rules of golf. This will take another four years before it will be released. An
example is where to drop etc. – they are looking at no more dropping in golf, you pick the
spot and place the ball after taking relief. Another example is loose impediments – same rule
will apply throughout the golf course, ie: in a bunker you can move loose impediments.
Reading of Annual Reports for 2014
