For trouble free installation and performance, please follow this guide. 1. Check that you have the right version of Phototex before starting to print. There is an Aqueous version and a Solvent version. The Solvent version can be used on eco-solvent, solvent, latex and UV printers. Check that the material has not been damaged in transport. All damages must be reported 2. immediately. 3. It is very rare to have batch to batch inconsistency, however for large areas it is recommended to use rolls from the same batch if possible. 4. Ensure the working area is clean, dry and light. It is good practice to constantly inspect your work as you are hanging it to obtain a perfect result. 5. The wall or other mounted surface should be sealed, clean and dry. Painted walls should have been left for 4 weeks to dry and if a diluted PVA mixture has been used (typically 3:1 always check manufacturers’ recommendations) to seal walls, this must be 100% dry before applying Phototex. Any condensation could affect the adhesive qualities of Phototex, ensure the wall is dry. Phototex has a unique oil based water resistant adhesive. 6. Room temperature above 15 degrees Celsius is the ideal temperature to apply Phototex to allow the adhesive to obtain its optimum strength. 7. If there is any doubt about the condition of the wall, its moisture level or roughness of the surface, we recommend that one full drop is hung on the wall and then assessed after 24 hours. 8. Always keep the Lot number for at least one month after Phototex has been hung to assist in tracing the product back to the factory. 9. For long term indoor use where fading could be an issue, potential high wear areas or outdoor use protection is advised by applying a Liquid laminate. Best results are achieved by applying the laminate by roller once hung on the wall. The Landor ‘Wallpaper Matte’ has been tested and matched for use with Phototex. 10. If in doubt please contact your supplier or Landor UK direct for one of our product specialists to advise you. Being a paste free wallpaper any professional decorator will be able to familiarise themselves quickly to create a perfect feature wall. Anyone with good basic DIY skills will be able to hang Phototex and achieve professional results. We are continually updating our support information through the ‘Phototex Tech Club’ at www.phototex.co.uk . There is a comprehensive FAQ section available there. www.phototex.co.uk Page 3 The 7 point guide to Phototex Digital Wallpaper 1. CHOOSE YOUR SPOT TO SHOW YOUR PRINTS! Pick a smooth, dry and clean surface. The most traditional places are on any wall, door, window or car (do not block the windscreen). When hanging Phototex on a standard painted wall, make sure the wall has been previously primed prior to painting and is completely dry. If you place Phototex on a pebbly, textured or porous surface (i.e. brick or cement walls), you may receive poor results, but in most cases it has worked. We also suggest not placing it above fireplaces. 2. CLEAN IT BEFORE YOU STICK IT Use a warm, damp cloth or sponge to clean the wall surface or window and allow it to completely dry. You can remove and replace the Phototex over and over again, however, once the adhesive collects too much dust, dirt or fibres it will become less effective, and the Phototex may not stick as well to your surface. 3. PEEL AND STICK IT Phototex is paste free which means there is no need for messy and time consuming pasting. Depending on the size of your Phototex print it may be helpful to have two people install it. Try not to let the adhesive come together, or the Phototex to fold up against itself. It’s okay if it does, you can separate it by carefully pulling it apart so you do not ruin the print. Start at the top of your Phototex print and pull down approximately 2-3” of the backer. By lightly pressing and smoothing, apply the 2-3” exposed adhesive area of your Phototex to the chosen surface area. Then continue to slowly pull the backer downward in 2-3” increments smoothing the Phototex as you go. Once the Phototex is started, it may be helpful if another person holds the bottom and pulls down slightly giving some tension and keeping it straight and easier to apply. If there are any bubbles or wrinkles, you can lightly press or smooth them out, or just peel back that area and re-apply. Please Note: Pressing too hard will not damage Phototex however, it may cause your hands to gather ink (due to the natural oils on your hands), and it could transfer from your hands onto another surface. 4. MAKING GOOD If a bubble re-appears over the next day or two, you can remove it by pressing and lightly rubbing it. This may happen occasionally because oil, dirt or dust could be on your surface. You can use a pin to pop the bubble and then smooth it out with your fingers in a circular motion. If it keeps re-appearing, you may want to move your Phototex to another area. 5. OUTDOORS With our patented adhesive you can place your Phototex on any outdoor flat surface; however, it may fade after 6-12 months of strong sun exposure. Liquid Lamination will improve the life of the inks and protect against fading. It has lasted up to 2 years before fading. Phototex will stay in place on a car for a long time, but car washes will eventually wear it out. We have thoroughly tested it on the outside of cars, race cars, boats and airplanes over a two-year period. To ensure Phototex stays on a moving surface, it is very important when applying it that there are no air gaps. Simply use the back of a spoon on top of the Phototex to smooth it tightly into cracks and around bends. 6. THE OPPORTUNITIES GO ON AND ON Phototex is limited by ones imagination only. It has captured the imagination of home users and top design agencies alike. Commercial printers can print for retail signage, office, interior design ads, home interior design. Sheets in A3 and A4 size are now available for home users offering a choice of commissioning a commercial printer or doing it themselves. 7. Also, the Phototex Material has no detrimental concerns of Phthalates and also our patent adhesive has no Phthalates. So our Phototex is safe from Phthalates” The manufacturers of Phototex work towards the following categories for recycling with its characteristics of: • • • Backing liner – Category 2 Material – Category 5 When inks and Lamination is added it can move Phototex to Category 12 Category 1 - Reusable goods, including intact or repairable home or industrial appliances; household goods; clothing; intact materials in demolition debris, such as lumber; building materials such as doors, windows, cabinets, and sinks; business supplies and equipment; lighting fixtures; and any manufactured item or naturally occurring object that can be repaired or used again as is. Category 2 - Paper, including newsprint; ledger paper; computer paper; corrugated cardboard; and mixed paper . Category 3 - Metals, both ferrous and nonferrous, including cans; parts from abandoned vehicles; plumbing; fences; metal doors and screens; tools; machinery; and any other discarded metal objects Category 4 – Glass, including glass containers and window glass. Category 5 - Textiles, including no reusable clothing; upholstery; and pieces of fabric. Category 6 - Plastics, including beverage containers; plastic packaging; plastic cases of consumer goods such as telephones or electronic equipment; films and tires. Category 7 – Plant debris, including leaves and cuttings; trimmings from trees, shrubs, and grass; whole plants, and sawdust. grass; whole plants, and sawdust. Category 8 - Putrescibles, including animal, fruit, and vegetable debris; cooked food; manures; offal; and sewage sludge Category 9 - Wood, including un-reusable lumber; tree rounds; and pallets. Category 10 - Ceramics, including rock; tile; china; brick; concrete; plaster; and asphalt. Category 11 - Soils, including excavation soils from barren or developed land; and excess soils from people’s yards. Category 12 - Chemicals, including acids; bases; solvents; fuels; lubricating oils; and medicines. From incomplete empirical studies and countless unsystematic real world observations, we can build up a composite picture of the way the twelve master categories are probably related. This is a best guess and is not accurate for any specific locality . Chart supplied from internet : © 1989 Daniel Knapp and Mary Lou Deventer. Excerpt from Total Recycling: Realistic Ways to Approach the Ideal. www.phototex.co.uk Page 7 Disclaimer Our test results over the past six years have been positive concerning Phototex digital wallpaper adhering to any and all flat non-porous surfaces, and safe removal without damage or harm to the surface Phototex was mounted onto. Liquid Lamination when correctly applied greatly improves fade resistance. We cannot control the environment and circumstances of all applications. Therefore, please read the factory test results and our disclaimer below. Best practice is to test in a small inconspicuous area prior to end application. Factory report on adhesive strength: Phototex has been tested outdoors for over six years in America in a similar climate to Central European Conditions. We can confirm positive results for outdoor use with pigment, water and UV based inks. We have signs still hanging after six years with some fading. Phototex wallpaper remains intact and secured on flat non-porous surfaces, in all conditions. We strongly recommend that Phototex is stuck on a flat, clean, dry surface for best results. Results can vary based on brand of inks. The Solvent version of Phototex is used for Eco-Solvent Inks, but has received mixed reviews therefore we do not recommend placing outdoors unless you apply liquid laminate (Landor ‘WallPaper Matte’ being a good matched solution). The Solvent Inks are lasting fine outdoors so far 18 months in testing. When printing with UV Ink care must be taken due to the over saturation of heavy solids. Since the ink sits on top of the material you may need up to a 1.5-2.5 cm border to prevent curling from the weight of the UV ink. Stay in the 40-50º C range. Bare metal (copper, brass, aluminium) can oxidize and actually melt the adhesive to leave a film in rare cases when removed. So you may need to use a mild detergent or multi-purpose cleaner. LandorUK Ltd, any and all representitives: Landor UK Ltd has complete confidence in Phototex to adhere without peeling or wrinkling on any and all clean sealed flat surfaces. Due to the unknown variable conditions of where Phototex is being placed or used, Landor UK Ltd and all its affiliates representing Landor UK Ltd cannot guarantee that under any and all circumstance the material will stay completely intact, and that no adhesive will remain on the surface when removed or that your surface will not adhere to the Phototex wallpaper. There are a number of variables out of our control; painted coats on the wall, age and type of paint used, dirt, undulation, dryness or dampness of the intended surface, no primers used and/or heat (making the adhesive more tacky) from the sun when removing off a window or surface. If there is any doubt about the condition of the wall, its moisture level or roughness of the surface, we strongly recommend that one full drop is hung on the wall and then assessed after 24 hours. Surfaces with a heavy texture, such as brickwork, are more difficult to adhere to; smooth surfaces are better suited to hanging wallpapers. Phototex wallpaper is a paste free wall covering. Simply print it, peel off the backing paper and put it on the wall or other surface. The unique oil based adhesive means Phototex is fully removable as the adhesive does not cure. No more hassle when putting it up or taking it down. How easy is Phototex to put up? Phototex is a strong fabric which is rigid enough to remove and refit, this helps in two ways. Firstly when putting up Phototex if there are any bubbles or wrinkles simply peel back and smooth onto the surface again. Secondly if you want to move the poster, peel back and reuse on the new site. If doing this it is good practice to make sure the adhesive side does not come into contact with dirt or dust. Videos are available at www.phototex.co.uk. Is a special surface needed to stick on? Phototex will stick to virtually any flat surface and some slightly textured surfaces. We have experience of sticking it over wood chip wall paper, walls, windows, poles, doors, cars, boats, tiles, sealed wood, mirrors, white fronted goods and many more. Visit any page on www.phototex.co.uk to see real applications. Can Phototex be used in the bathroom? Yes it can, high humidity does not affect Phototex. We have been running a test for over 6 months in a shower and it is still stuck as though it was the first day. For added protection it can be liquid laminated with Landor ‘WallPaper Matte’. How do I make cut out shapes? Phototex can be ‘kiss cut’ when it is printed so you simply peel it off as the right shape, sharp blade are recommended. Phototex can be simply cut with scissors. Can I put Phototex on newly painted walls? We always recommend a minimum drying period of 4 weeks for a painted wall, longer if possible to make sure that Phototex is easy to remove. Can I reuse the sticker/wallpaper when I peel it off? Phototex is well suited for this due to its patented adhesive. We have customers who use Phototex over and over again by re-applying it to the release liner when they take it from the wall, ‘look after the glue and it will look after you’. How much residue is left on the surface when I peel off the sticker or wallpaper? 99.9% of the time Phototex leaves no residue. Is Phototex available in sheets and rolls? Rolls and sheets are available, as described earlier in this handbook. Can Phototex be used outside? Yes it can, to improve fade resistance Liquid Lamination is recommended. Test have shown outdoor unlaminated longevity to be 6-12 months depending on the conditions with pigmented inks. Is Phototex available outside the UK? We currently have distributors in Austria, Benelux, Canada, Cyprus, France, Greece, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey and USA. We are looking for the right partners in all other European and Middle East countries. How do I keep up to date with Phototex? We have a newsletter, sign up at www.phototex.co.uk. Alternatively follow us on Twitter or ‘like’ our Facebook page. What is the best way to Liquid Laminate Phototex? Many of our customers want extra protection for Phototex and use liquid lamination. A positive effect is that Liquid Lamination can also improve the colour vibrancy of the image. We recommend hanging Phototex onto the wall and hand applying Liquid Lamination over the finished article for the best protection. Our Liquid Lamination Handbook is available at www.landoruk.com for more information. Can someone print it for me? We have partners who specialise in printing it, send us a quick email and we will be in touch. www.phototex.co.uk Page 12 FAQ’s Do I need to use application tape? No. Phototex is a polyester weave fabric making it very stable and easy to hang. If there happens to be an issue you simply peel it back and re-apply. Do you butt-join or overlap Phototex? Butt joining Phototex gives the best final finish. Phototex is fully coated allowing edge to edge printing. Alternatively you can print it leaving a border and trim with a sharp knife and a long ruler. With practice, joins can be virtually eliminated visually, then a liquid laminate can be applied by roller (WallPaper Matte for example) to seal and protect Phototex. Is the product totally opaque / blockout? Phototex is not a 100% block out product. It does mask some of the imperfections of the wall, for the best results a wall free from marks is recommended. How is Phototex transported? Phototex can be rolled against itself. It is best if the original lining paper is left on or any other backing release paper/ film can be used. If the image is to be taken down and put somewhere else it is good practice to keep the original liner to protect the glue, maintaining the excellent adhesive qualities of Phototex. www.phototex.co.uk Page 13 Head Office Landor Uk Ltd 51 &ODUHQFH5RDG )OHHW +DPSVKLUH *85< United Kingdom European Distribution Landor Uk Ltd 9DOH+RXVH 9DOH6WUHHW %ROWRQ %/4) United Kingdom Tel: +44 (0)1252 62 44 11 Fax: +44 (0)1252 62 34 11 email: [email protected] www. phototex.co.uk © Landor Uk Ltd 2011
