ADVENTURE WV ORIENTATION TRIPS – PROGRAM PACKET Adventure WV Orientation Trips Packing List—Odyssey 2017 Please visit http://adventureorientation.wvu.edu/registeredstudents for more equipment information. There you will find information on the best types of gear, why we require certain items, and details about equipment such as boots, fabrics, and raingear. EQUIPMENT FOR LOAN: Sleeping bags* and sleeping pads* can be borrowed at no charge from Adventure WV. However, if you have your own and would like to bring them, you may and we’ll double check them. *You do NOT need to notify us to borrow these items. They will be available when you check in for your program! BRING WARMER CLOTHING: It will be colder than you expect and you’ll end up dressing in layers! The weather at the Outdoor Education Center is generally 10 degrees colder than temperatures in Morgantown. Check the weather and be prepared. AVOID COTTON: Avoid cotton clothing as much as possible. Cotton does not keep you warm once it gets wet, which is a big deal when you’re in the outdoors. Please bring SYNTHETIC (polyester, fleece, wool, nylon, etc.) as much as is possible. CONSIDER BUYING USED OR BORROWING: When beginning to prepare for your trip, consider that not everything needs to be purchased new, nor do things have to have the latest and greatest brand names. Use what you have, borrow from a friend or family member, or visit a local thrift store or discount store! FEET HEAD 1 pair of sturdy, hiking boots (waterproof is best) 1 pair of running shoes or sneakers, for wearing around camp 1 pair of athletic sandals WITH A BACKSTRAP, water shoes, or old sneakers—for wearing during whitewater rafting 5-6 pairs of socks. A minimum of 1 pair should be SYNTHETIC. Warm SYNTHETIC Hat (fleece or wool) Brimmed hat for sun protection (like a baseball hat) (optional) UPPER BODY A few t-shirts (4-5). At least 1 should be SYNTHETIC. Bring WVU shirts if you have them! 2-3 long-sleeved shirts. At least 1 should be SYNTHETIC. 1-2 tank tops (optional) WARM SYNTHETIC jacket/sweater (fleece). Do NOT bring a cotton hoodie. Sports bras, as needed (SYNTHETIC is better than cotton) 1 pair of thin SYNTHETIC gloves (optional) 1 SYNTHETIC vest or an extra SYNTHETIC long sleeve layer (optional) LOWER BODY Underwear (ideal to have at least 1 SYNTHETIC pair) 2-3 pairs of athletic shorts. Avoid jean shorts or other cotton shorts. Also keep in mind that you will be wearing a harness for various activities. Compression shorts are recommended. 1 pair of SYNTHETIC long underwear. Running tights/spandex are perfect, as are fleece pants. These need to fit under your other pair of SYNTHETIC long pants. 1 pair SYNTHETIC long pants. These should be loose-fitting and able to fit over your long underwear/running tights. Do NOT bring jeans or cotton sweatpants. Bathing suit (or use athletic shorts & sports bra – you’ll use these when whitewater rafting) RAIN GEAR Waterproof rain jacket. See online for details. Do NOT use a windbreaker as a rain jacket. Waterproof rain pants. See online for details. (optional but recommended) HYGIENE (Please NO AEROSOLS!) Consider repackaging or purchasing travel sizes. It is important to have all the same size containers so they pack easily in our trailers. Label it with your name & decorate it to make it your own! Day pack (small book bag or backpack). Do NOT bring drawstring bags. Sleeping Bag, Synthetic Fill, 20-45 degrees*Available from Adventure WV* Sleeping Pad *Available from Adventure WV* 2 (1-quart) water bottles. Available for purchase at check in. Sturdy food container (plate or bowl), mug, and spoon or spork. You will use these to eat your meals with during the week. No glass! Headlamp with fresh batteries AND extra batteries. LED lights are strongly recommended. Notebook/journal with pen to be used as your trip journal (this is worth 10% of your grade for RPTR 140, the class associated with your trip) OPTIONAL ITEMS Past participants say they would recommend the following items to other participants, but none of the items listed below are required. Money (up to $50, please no more) for snacks on the road and tipping your raft guides (optional, but we strongly encourage tipping!) Pajamas (though wearing the other clothing items you bring is a useful alternative) Watch with alarm Pocket knife (3 inch blade or smaller) Sunglasses 1-2 bandanas. Many uses! Crazy Creek chair (or similar) WITHOUT legs Camera (you cannot use a phone or iPod as a camera) Travel pillow Extra utensils (plastic knife, spoon, fork, bowl) Snacks (AWV provides all food and snacks, but if there is something you really like, feel free to bring a small amount with you for the week) DO NOT BRING. REALLY. DON’T. Cell phones or any other electronics (including iPods and MP3 players). We will carry an emergency cell phone and satellite phone in the “off” position on the trip. Most of our participants end up really appreciating the disconnect from technology! If you bring your cell phone or electronic to check-in, we will provide a locked space to store it during the trip. Drugs, alcohol, or tobacco. Bringing these items is grounds for dismissal from the trip with no refund. You may also be subject to university and/or legal sanctions. Anything not on the packing list! We will do a thorough gear check when you arrive and you will be asked to leave extraneous items behind in our locked spaces.
