Year of Grace Prayer.
Gracious God, You have blessed this ancient land with many gifts, especially its people.
We thank you for the Year of Grace, a time to start afresh from Christ.
You invite us to contemplate the face of Jesus your Son, that we may experience a new wave of
grace, and that the light of Christ may burn more brightly in our lives.
Attune our hearts and minds to the presence of your Holy Spirit, that our Church may be
transformed, our relationships be healed, and our nation grow in compassion and justice.
With the intercession of St Mary MacKillop, who showed us new ways of living the Gospel,
we make our prayer through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Mary, Help of Christians, pray for us.

A THOUGHT A DAY
Swallowing angry words is better than eating crow.
The ability to lie is a liability.
I have my doubts about disbelief.
Jesus - don't leave Earth without Him!
God's lease on life never expires.
If you're searching for nuggets of truth, the Bible is a gold
mine.
First Reading Jos 24:1-2, 15-18
A reading from the book of Joshua
Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel together at Shechem; then he
called the elders, leaders, judges and scribes of Israel, and they
presented themselves before God. Then Joshua said to all the people: ‘If
you will not serve the Lord, choose today whom you wish to serve,
whether the gods that your ancestors served beyond the River, or the
gods of the Amorites in whose land you are now living. As for me and my
House, we will serve the Lord.’ The people answered, ‘We have no
intention of deserting the Lord and serving other gods! Was it not the
Lord our God who brought us and our ancestors out of the land of Egypt,
the house of slavery, who worked those great wonders before our eyes
and preserved us all along the way we travelled and among all the
peoples through whom we journeyed. We too will serve the Lord, for he
is our God.’
The Word of the Lord
Responsorial Psalm Ps 33:2-3. 16-23. R. v.9
(R.) Taste and see the goodness of the Lord.
1. I will bless the Lord at all times, his praise always on my lips; in the
Lord my soul shall make its boast. The humble shall hear and be
glad. (R.)
2.
3.
4.
5.
The Lord turns his face against the wicked to destroy their
remembrance from the earth. The Lord turns his eyes to the just
and his ears to their appeal. (R.)
They call and the Lord hears and rescues them in all their distress.
The Lord is close to the broken-hearted; those whose spirit is
crushed he will save. (R.)
Many are the trials of the just man but from them all the Lord will
rescue him. He will keep guard over all his bones, not one of his
bones shall be broken. (R.)
Evil brings death to the wicked; those who hate the good are
doomed. The Lord ransoms the souls of his servants. Those who
hide in him shall not be condemned. (R.)
Second Reading Eph 5:21-32
A reading from the letter of St Paul to the Ephesians
Give way to one another in obedience to Christ. Wives should regard
their husbands as they regard the Lord, since as Christ is head of the
Church and saves the whole body, so is a husband the head of his wife;
and as the Church submits to Christ, so should wives to their husbands,
in everything. Husbands should love their wives just as Christ loved the
Church and sacrificed himself for her to make her holy. He made her
clean by washing her in water with a form of words, so that when he took
her to himself she would be glorious, with no speck or wrinkle or
anything like that, but holy and faultless. In the same way, husbands
must love their wives as they love their own bodies; for a man to love his
wife is for him to love himself. A man never hates his own body, but he
feeds it and looks after it; and that is the way Christ treats the Church,
because it is his body – and we are its living parts. For this reason, a
man must leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the
two will become one body. This mystery has many implications; but I am
saying it applies to Christ and the Church.
The Word of the Lord
Gospel Acclamation
Alleluia, alleluia!
Your words, Lord, are spirit and life: you have the words of everlasting
life.
Alleluia!
Gospel Jn 6:60-69
A reading from the holy Gospel according to John
After hearing his doctrine many of the followers of Jesus said, ‘This is
intolerable language. How could anyone accept it?’ Jesus was aware that
his followers were complaining about it and said, ‘Does this upset you?
What if you should see the Son of Man ascend to where he was before?
‘It is the spirit that gives life, the flesh has nothing to offer. The words I
have spoken to you are spirit and they are life. ‘But there are some of
you who do not believe.’ For Jesus knew from the outset those who did
not believe, and who it was that would betray him. He went on, ‘This is
why I told you that no one could come to me unless the Father allows
him.’ After this, many of his disciples left him and stopped going with
him. Then Jesus said to the Twelve, ‘What about you, do you want to go
away too?’ Simon Peter answered, ‘Lord, who shall we go to? You have
the message of eternal life, and we believe; we know that you are the
Holy One of God.’
The Gospel of the Lord
Communion Antiphon
Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, says the
Lord, and I will raise him up on the last day.

A REMINDER OF OUR
THANKSGIVING PROGRAM
"If it does not please you to serve
the Lord, decide today whom you
will serve..... As for me and my
household, we will serve the Lord."
(Joshua 24:15)
When we commit to serve the Lord,
we must be willing to become a
partner in the work of the Lord. A
partner is a person who invests
time, talent and treasure. If we say
we serve God, we must actually do
something!

Footy Tipping at St Macartan's Parish
Round 21
Round 21 was full of surprises but
despite the surprises Sue Douglas and
Bill O'Reilly both scored 8 out of 9. A
very good effort. Despite the surprises
there was no change in the top position
on the tippers' ladder. Terry Coppock,
despite his worst effort for many rounds,
still holds a lead of three wins with two
rounds to go. James Barrett and Dawn
Meier took advantage of Terry's lapse
and have moved into equal second place
with Kees Duyvestyn and Paul Stinear.
They are closely followed by Irene
Hackett, Delina Frank, Graham Thomas,
Nick Roe and Sister Lois. Sister's drop
down the ladder may be in sympathy
with hew beloved Bombers? Then
follows Katherine Hawthorne, Barry
Hansen and Terry McKenzie. Each week
members have to pick the winning
margin in the first match of the round.
Our best performer over the 21 rounds
has been Michael Eastwood just ahead of
Myke Schultz. Three others to do well
are Margaret Canty, Denis Hawthorne
and James Barrett. There are interesting
games in round 22 and we can expect
some dramatic changes to the leaders'
board. Every member has now chosen
over 100 winners. The cup of coffee
must have done the trick Very good
coffee we're told.
The AFL Finals' Series
Some members have already entered
for the Finals' Knockout competition.
If you wish to enter just ring 0438 350

GOVERNER OF VICTORIA VISITS
ST MACARTAN'S PARISH SCHOOL
On Thursday 16th August we were fortunate
to have a visit from the Governor of
Victoria, His Excellency, Mr Chernov.
After welcoming the Governor, we took him
on a tour. Our first stop was the Preps. Mr
Chernov was lucky enough to receive a
lollipop and a paper trophy from two of the
Preps. All the Preps had a lovely time while
the Governor was showing them pictures of
Government House, the Botanic Gardens,
the Yarra River, the Anzac Shrine and the
Victoria Governor's and Australian flag.
After the Preps had asked him endless
questions, we headed around to the
Sustainability Centre. He was particularly
interested in our kitchen and liked how we
reused so many things to make it. After
showing him our animals, we took him into
the 5/6 pod where about 15 year 5/6s were
waiting for him. They asked him lots of
questions. We were invited to come and
have a visit at his house, Government House,
later in the year. He finally ended his visit
with a cup of tea and refreshments in the
staffroom. he said that our school was such
a lovely place that he would bring his wife
and come again.

ST VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY
On Monday, Peter Gurry visited St Mac's
Parish School and received an enormous
cheque from Mia and Daniel on behalf
the Student Representative Council. The
children raised $676.05 from their book
fair last term. Peter explained to the
children how Vinnie's supports families
in our community who may not be able to
afford groceries, rent or clothing. He
also thanked the children for their wacky
sock donations and told them how happy
families were to receive them.

RCIA (CATECHUMENATE 2012/2013)
It is time to start planning, the new RCIA commencing soon. We have our team from
last year ready to go – many thanks to them – Sr. Gen, John & Mary Lewis, Paul
Girolami and Terry Roberts, and our presenters Michael Harrison and David
Hansen.
Just a reminder of what it’s about:The R.C.I.A. (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) is a simple experience and
explanation of the Catholic/Christian Faith – the things that Christians believe and try
to practise. We try to deal with some of the big issues of our society today. Topics
like death, the problems of pain and suffering, moral issues, marriage and family,
reasons for hope, etc, etc.
The get-together is on a Monday evening in the Community Centre from 7.30pm –
9.00pm – ending with a cuppa, if you can stay a little while.
I am sure we will have a good group again this year.
The program is for;
a)
non-Catholics
b)
Catholics who’ve not been practising
c)
people who just want to update their understanding.
At the end, some people may wish to join the Catholic faith – if so, that’s great – if it
just leads to a better understanding of oneself and God that would be wonderful too.
This will be the eleventh RCIA group at St Macartan's since 2002. All these groups
have been outstanding in growth, learning and friendship as well.
RCIA runs from early October 2012 through to Pentecost 2013 – missing holidays
of course. Our first get-together is Monday, October 8th at 7.30pm. If you would like
to discuss it a bit more before making a commitment just give me a ring.
Any other queries; ring the Parish House 5975 2200, John & Mary Lewis 5974 8715,
Sr Gen 0407 777 736, Paul Girolami 5975 3430 or Terry Roberts 9775 2018.
