Senior Choir
Mrs. Heeg and Mrs. Eising are excited to start a choir at JCCS! We are looking for enthusiastic
students willing to participate in praise and wor
worship

part of a choir. No auditions required ☺; all students in Gr. 5 – 8 are welcome to come and
check this out for the next two weeks in the music room during your lunch recess on Tuesdays.
After this trial period
eriod we ask that you commit to choir practices and performances for the
remainder of the term. We look forward to seeing you next week Tuesday!
CLASSROOM NEWS
KINDERGARTEN
Welcome back to a new school year!
The children and I shared a great day yester
yesterday.
Everyone was coping with their new
environment brilliantly. Today we hope to have
another day of orientation, ensuring that all are
feeling confident and secure.
Blue folders have gone home with your
child. These folders will go back and forth from
home to school to ensure that communication
is current on a daily basis. Please check these
folders daily for notes and correspondence
from school.
Next week we will start the “Snuggle up
and Read Club”. Your child will take a book
home every school day. Please read to them
and then record the title on the list provided.
This exercise is imperative for reading success
for your child. A full explanation of the club will
be available with the package next week.
Next week will be Aa week. Children are
encouraged
uraged to bring in items that start with the
letter Aa for show and tell.
If you wish to speak to me concerning
any matter that pertains to your child, feel free
to contact me at home; (905) 575-3864.
GRADE ONE/TWO
Welcome to another school year – our 55th – at
Jarvis Community Christian School!
There are many new things, apart from our
name change, that we are excited to share with
our students this year. In our class, in
particular, we will be using brand new Science
and Social Studies programs. We have also
added a new Reading text to our program.
The grades 1 and 2 classroom has a new look,
some new blackboards, a new computer and,
best of all, a new student to our JCCS family. I
am very pleased to welcome Riley to the Grade
2 class. Riley played
ed on the same soccer team
as Joshua two summers ago. So, he already has
a friend at school to help him become adjusted
and learn the “ropes”. We’re so happy to have
you join us, Riley. We know you will love it here
with us at JCCS.
There are several items to note that you will
find useful during this school year. They are:
-Your child will bring home his or her agenda
daily. From time to time, he/she will write
notes to you or as reminders to themselves
concerning work to be completed or items to be
remembered. Please ensure that the agenda is
returned to school each day in your child’s
backpack.
-Should you want to communicate with me,
please do not use the agenda book to do so.
Simply use a piece of paper, call the office, or
make an appointment to speak with me. Your
child needs to have agenda sections clear for
their use.
-During all full weeks (5 days-no holiday weeks)
of school, there will be a Spelling quiz on
Fridays. Also, Bible Memory Work will be
quizzed on Fridays. Spelling quizzes will be
written while Memory quizzes will be oral.
-Each Monday your child will bring home a copy
of the Spelling list for the week. Please practice
the words with your child to ensure success.
Extra “challenge” words will be given, upon
request, for those wishing for an extra
challenge for their children.
-Please feel free to send a bottle of water for
your child to enjoy throughout the day.
Reusable bottles are preferred, although plastic
bottles are acceptable and will be recycled.
As always, should you have any questions or
concerns, please do not hesitate in making an
appointment to speak with me. I look forward
to this school year as we seek to educate, train
and grow together in Christ.
French: We’ve had a good beginning in French
class learning lots of words already (Bonjour!, Je
suis..., tout le monde, Ça va bien, Ça va mal, Ça
va comme ci comme ça, et, toi, lPve-toi, assiedstoi, saute, arrLte, marche, court, c’est
fantastique! and more!!) Parents, expect to
hear more French at home as we go through
the year ( Madame Booy
GRADE THREE/FOUR
Welcome back to a new year! We’ve had a
great couple of first days in Grade 3/4. We are
enjoying getting to know each other better in
our newly renovated room. Today students
took home order forms for both Chickadee and
Highlights. Please fill out each form and return
to school, even if you do not want to subscribe.
The more responses I get, the more likely we
are to receive a free subscription for our
classroom and other supplies as well.
Memory work: For next week Wednesday
students are learning James 1:1-2.
Bible: Our unit this term focuses on the
Israelites’ 40 years in the wilderness. This week
we are learning about the tabernacle and how it
reminded the people of God’s presence.
Spelling: We will have our first spelling test
next week Friday on Lesson 1. Students will
bring home a list on Monday.
Gr. 3 Math: Our first chapter begins with a
review of basic addition and subtraction facts to
18.
Gr. 4 Math: Our first chapter involves an
exploration of the place value and base ten
concepts on which our number system is built.
Reading: We are reading about urban and rural
communities. Ask your child what you might
find in each community.
French: We too have had a good beginning in
French class. We are thankful to have the grade
4’s with us who help us along since they did
such a good job of remembering what they
learned last year. See the French note in the
grade 1&2 section to see many of the words
that we’ve worked on already! TrPs bien, tout
le monde ( Madame Booy
GRADE FIVE/SIX
With Mrs. Dykstra….
It was good to be back and working in the
classroom again. It was so nice to see familiar
faces on Tuesday morning. We are back into
swing of things. Here are some things that are
coming up next week to keep in mind.
Grade 5:
Spelling: Lesson 1 test is tomorrow. Students
have a copy of the words and a second copy is
coming home today for students to review
form. Spelling tests will be on Fridays unless
there is a P.D., in which case the test will be on
Thursday.
Continues next page…
Genre Reading: Students, as part of reading,
will be looking at different genres (types of
writing; poetry, biography, fiction, etc.) through
the year and reading one novel a month.
Students will also have to do some activities
based on the novel that they have read. To help
get a variety of different books, we will be going
to the public library. Our first trip will be on
Tuesday morning. If students have their own
library card, please send it to school on Monday
or Tuesday so that students can sign out books
from the library. There will be a book basket in
the classroom to which students can return
their library books and I will bring them back
before they are due. Reminders of due dates
will also be in the newsletter. If your child does
not have a library card, please have them fill in
the form and return them tomorrow so that the
library cards can be ready for us on Tuesday.
Problem of the Week: Each week we will be
having a problem to solve. It will not necessarily
be a math problem, but students can use what
they know about problem solving in math to
help them solve the problem. The problems will
also be in the newsletter each week so that
parents can have a try at solving the problem as
well. Here is the problem for this week:
Turn Around Words When you spell most
words backwards, you get a word that doesn’t
mean anything, such as girl –lrig. But
sometimes when you turn a word around you
get a new, real word. For example, spell rat
backwards and you get tar. Here are clues to
some words that become new words when
they’re turned around. See how many you can
get.
Turn around a word for a number and get a
word for something with which you catch
fish.
Turn around a word for a tool to cook with
and get a word for something a baby often
does.
Turn around a word that means “at this very
moment” and get a word for something that is
gained by a victory.
Turn around the word for a thing you do
work with and get the word for something
pirates were always seeking.
Turn around a word that means “not dead,”
and get a word that means “very, very bad.”
Turn around a word for someone who isn’t
truthful and you’ll get a word for something a
train needs.
Gr 5/6:
Memory Work: Pieces for memory work will be
due on Wednesdays. The first piece is James
1:1-4. This will be due the last Wednesday of
the month. If students find this a long piece
they may learn the first two verses and write
them out a week or two earlier on Wednesday.
Agendas: I ask that parents please check
student’s agendas every day. Please also sign or
initial them to show that you have checked
them. I will check them in the morning. This
helps keep communication open between you
and myself. Thanks.
Socials: We have started our study of the First
Nation people of North America. Later on this
term we will also be learning all about the
European explorers who first set foot on this
continent. This week we have looked at First
Nation myths and legends. If you have any
artifacts from First Nation people, and are
willing to share them with us, please send them
to school in a well-labeled zip-lock bag. We
would love to see some arrow heads ☺, and
promise to treat your treasures with respect.
Gr 6 with Mrs. Eising…
Welcome back! A special welcome to Meghan
who has joined the Gr. 6 gang. We look forward
to getting to know you Meghan!
It's great to be back after a wonderful summer
break. I have enjoyed hearing about the
adventures the Gr. 6 students have had these
past 10 weeks. We have adjusted very well to
being back in the classroom. The students have
definitely grown this summer - our desks from
last year were too small for many students.
Like last year, the students will have a spelling
dictation every Friday - this week excluded. The
list will go home on Mondays. Lessons will be
completed in class throughout the week. For
some students it is imperative that the list
gets reviewed at home prior to the dictation.
Your assistance with this task may be very
beneficial for your child.
In our reading, we are working on Suspense
stories. We have started reading a suspense
novel that the students seem to enjoy
thoroughly. Every student is also expected to be
reading through a chapter book of his/her
choice, starting next week Monday. We have a
good selection in our classroom library, but
books may be brought from home as well.
Please remind your child about finding a
chapter book, as some students may need a
gentle push in this academic direction :) Also, if
you know of a book that you think might be a
'hit' with a Gr. 6 student, please let me know
and I'll try to find it for our classroom library.
For math we will aim to complete a lesson daily.
This may mean that some students will have
homework every now and then. The unit we are
currently working on is called, Addition and
Subtraction of Whole Numbers and Decimals. If
you have any questions, concerns, or joys you
wish to share with me, with regards to your
child, please know that I'm always available to
meet with you, or only a phone call away. I look
forward to a very exciting year!
Blessing,
Mrs. Eising
French: I was quite impressed to see how
much French was maintained over the summer.
We got right back into it with our very first
lesson this year! Some of our new vocab from
our first lesson is: d’accord, le contraire, une
fenLtre, une lumiPre, et un ordinateur. La
classe travaille bien (
GRADE SEVEN/EIGHT
Welcome back!! Isn’t it the most wonderful
time of the year?! We are excited to be back in
school and are already getting into the swing of
things. Our first two days together have been
good ones (
Here is what is going on:
Memory Work: This year we will be learning
James 1. For tomorrow students need to know
verse 1: “James, a servant of God and of the
Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes scattered
among the nations. Greetings.”
For next Friday please learn verses 2 and 3:
Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you
face trials of many kinds, because you know
that the testing of your faith develops
perseverance.
Bible We’ve begun a unit based on the last
week of Jesus’ life: “A week of passion”.
Interestingly enough we learned that the Latin
background for passion is “suffering.” We
discussed that Jesus had lots of love in order to
suffer so much for our salvation.
Spelling We are working through unit 1. Our test
will be next Friday.
Grammar: Our first unit is on nouns. We’ve already
covered nouns as simple subjects and complete
subjects.
Our unit in Language Arts/Literacy is about fears
and phobias. I am wondering if your child came
home and told you they have scolionophobia or
phronemophobia? I hope not ( (Feel free to Google
these terms)
French We have our first French class tomorrow.
Technology A letter will be sent home today (or
earlier this week with a sibling) summarizing our
technology unit.
Math On Tuesday we watched a video on how math
is so much more than pen and paper work. It was
very pleasing to hear comments like “Wow! Cool! I
never knew math was everywhere!” We were able
to discover more of the order and pattern that God
used in His amazing creation.
