East Gippsland
Creative Gippsland brings you a month-long, Gippsland-wide
celebration of the region’s creativity in all forms of art.
In its seventh year, the May arts celebration has been designed with
the audience in mind. It features a series of special events to get you
visiting, learning, participating, making and perhaps taking the arts
home with you!
Throughout the month there will be demonstrations, workshops,
masterclasses, artist talks, residencies and more.Visual, performing
arts and the written word will feature, in your own backyard and a
little further afield, with something for everyone.
Explore what is on offer. Embrace your creative side.
Come and play with us in May.
Online www.creativegippsland.com.au
www.facebook.com/CreativeGippsland
Instagram creative_gippsland
We are pleased to present the Creative Gippsland Artist in Residence program
that will see selected artists spend seven days during May, in a beautiful small town
in Gippsland.
The artists will create a piece of work in response to the environment
and community.
For host communities it will be an opportunity to spend time with an artist with
new ideas and ways of looking at their world.
New skills can be acquired as well as a deeper knowledge of a particular art form
or artistic practice.
The celebration will feature poets, visual artists, musicians and others giving
workshops, creating works and sharing with the communities.
Wanda Bennett
Speciality Medium: Textile Artist
Late May
Dates: Day Street, Omeo
Location: www.wandabennett.mackaycreatives.com.au
I have been working as an artist /designer in both
Australia and the UK since 1990 and completed
my Master of Contemporary Art degree at the
University of Tasmania in 2009. I work mainly with
natural, recycled and found materials and use both
traditional and contemporary textile techniques.
I draw much of my inspiration from the coastal
landscape of North Queensland where I currently
work from my home based studio. My work varies
from traditional and contemporary basketry,
processional puppets, installations, public art, textile
hangings and garments. Working with the community
also plays a large role in my work and although my
main skills lie as a maker I have experience in street
performance and have worked on and coordinated
projects combining visual art, drama, music and film.
International Book Artist: Dea Fischer
Dea Fischer is an internationally sought teacher and
book artist with works held in special, public and
private collections in Canada, the US, England, Korea
and Japan, including the Haas Family Collection at Yale
University, and the Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library
at the University of Toronto. Dea is the conservator
for a public library and teaches popular courses
in book arts, altered books, collage and low tech
image creation. Dea has a slow-burning love affair with books, collage and low-tech
photography. In her off hours, she engages her community in acts of random creation.
Among full time roles as a wife and mother, and
conservator for a public library, I’m an on-the-go
book and mixed media artist. I live and work in the
breathtaking Canadian Rockies, and exhibit and teach
worldwide. The world is quite a fascinating place
to me, and I like to explore its themes through my
work. The mysteries of the natural world provide me
with continual inspiration. I work across disciplines,
including collage and photography, but artist’s books
are my chief form of expression. The possibilities are absolutely endless, the challenge
continual, and I am never short of ideas to convey my world through the pages of a
book. When I’m not in a fury of creation in my studio, I thrive on lighting the fire of
creativity in others.
Keeping a journal in which to explore your creativity
and thoughts can be precious and valuable.
Imagine the far deeper reward and engagement when
you are able to work in a book that you made with
your own hands.
The sensory experience of creating a book is
intimate – you are creating a work of art that will be held, cradled, experienced in
the hand, explored with the senses.
In a series of workshops, you will create a unique, stunning and functional work of
art using beautiful materials – soft papers, linen threads and embroidered design felt
– as a sanctuary for your thoughts, writing or drawing. You will create a decorated
design felt cover for your journal, using needle felting and embroidery techniques.
You will then bind your journal into your decorated cover. You will be introduced to
stitched bookbinding techniques as a springboard for further creative work and gain
confidence to make your own creative choices.
MonoPrinting, Adelaide Macpherson
2, 6, 16 and 20 May
In these workshops you will be introduced to techniques
for making a single one of a kind print. Through a series
of set exercises you will be guided in creating prints using
different methods which include drawing, rubbing back
and colour stencilling. You will work on copper plates
15 x 20cm, use professional printing ink and paper.
Most prints will be made by using an etching press. Location: Bruthen Studio, Bruthen

How to develop an Artist Statement
and Biography
5 May
How to sell you!...why you make your art, what inspires
you to make it, what it signifies or represents, what’s
unique or special about how you make it, and briefly,
what it means to you.
An effective artist biography (bio) is necessary information
to have as part of the artist’s presentation to any viewers
and interested parties of their artwork. A well written and
composed artist bio serves to help a reader to connect to
the artist and to the artist’s artwork.

Dry Point Etching, Adelaide Macpherson
24, 27 and 28 May
The dry-point technique consists of scratching into the
surface of a printing plate. The scratched mark lifts the
plate’s surface creating a burr. When ink is wiped across
the plate the raised burr along with the etched scratched
marks retain ink as the plate is gently wiped clean.
Clear plastic plates 15x22cm will be used for this
workshop, they are ideal for the beginner as the plate can
be placed directly over a drawing / photo and traced with
the etching tool. Come prepared with a line based drawing
or simply choose from selected examples. A colour
monoprint wash will be printed along with the inked
dry point plate.
