University of Oxford
The Ashmolean is the University of Oxford’s museum
of art and archaeology, opened in 1683. It is the
oldest public museum in the world and has incredibly
rich and diverse collections from around the globe,
ranging from Egyptian mummies and classical
sculpture to the Pre-Raphaelites and modern art.
SUMMER AT THE ASHMOLEAN
Xa Sturgis, Director
Raphael’s drawings play a
central role in the history
of the Ashmolean – it was
the gift to the Museum of
the unrivalled collection of
drawings by Raphael and
Michelangelo, assembled by
the artist Thomas Lawrence,
that formed the basis of the
Ashmolean’s exceptional collection of old master
drawings. This summer we are bringing masterpieces
from our collection together with an astonishing
group of international loans to create a once-in-alifetime exhibition, Raphael: The Drawings. Not only
will the exhibition bring together some of the greatest
drawings ever produced but it also seeks to examine
them in new ways, exploring drawings as a means of
expression, experiment and thought. It promises to
be a breath-taking and captivating show.
Meanwhile during the ever-popular Festival of
Archaeology in July we will be focused on the
Anglo-Saxons and the Vikings, two cultures central
to the creation of England as we recognise it today.
Experience live music and storytelling, crafts, coin
striking and object handling, as well as expert talks
and tours – including the chance to hear from the
finder of our recent acquisition, the Watlington Viking
Hoard.
Later on in the season the Phoenix Picturehouse will
be taking over the museum for a weekend of pop-up
cinema in August. Come down early and enjoy a
drink until the sun goes down and the films begin. In
September, toasting our proud status as the world’s
first University museum, we are helping to host
Curiosity Carnival, a celebration and showcase of the
world-leading academic research taking place here in
Oxford.
In the autumn we will also be opening a new
gallery concentrating on the founding collections,
in celebration of our founder Elias Ashmole’s
400th birthday. In the meantime we hope that our
programme of free tours, gallery activities, talks, and
delicious menus running throughout will tempt you to
the Museum. We look forward to seeing you.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP!
The Ashmolean depends on its many
supporters and donors in everything
it does. Your support is important to
us and has enabled us to inspire and
educate a new generation of visitors.
