Fraternity and Sorority Life UCM 3032-13 With 23 national social Greek letter organizations and more than 90 years of experience at UCM, fraternity and sorority life has been pointing students in the right direction to: Achieve Academic Excellence The fraternity and sorority life grade point average is higher than the overall UCM student grade point average, and more than 30 percent of UCM Greek members are on the dean’s list each semester. Semester grades can be found on fraternity and sorority life Web pages. Earn Scholarships Many Greek chapters, as well as the Greek community, offer scholarships. Also, Greek chapters encourage high grade point averages, which can make it easier to earn non-Greek scholarships. Enhance Character and Service Development In the fraternity and sorority life community, students learn about themselves, serve others and prepare to be civic leaders of tomorrow. Each year, UCM’s Greek students raise approximately $20,000 for various philanthropies and provide approximately 15,000 service hours. Network for Future CareerS Affordability Fraternity and sorority members share the Greek experience with thousands of other men and women across the country. This provides Greek students with contacts across the nation and exposure to career opportunities. Develop Leadership Skills Fraternity and sorority life offers extraordinary leadership opportunities. Chapters are self-governing bodies that provide a hands-on experience. Many Greeks also hold positions in notable student organizations. More than 25 percent of the Who’s Who Inductees at UCM are Greek. In fact, several student government presidents and winners of the Charno Award, which recognizes the one outstanding male and female graduate of the year, have been Greek. Hazing Policy The University of Central Missouri has a no tolerance policy in regard to hazing. UCM will not ignore any reported cases of suspected hazing. Any allegations of hazing made against an individual or an organization will be cause for the university to begin its investigative process. Potential punishment could result in suspension from the university for individuals found involved or responsible organizations. The university hazing policy can be found on fraternity and sorority life Web pages. Housing National Panhellenic Council: On-campus chapter meeting and hang-out space, as well as chapter housing, is provided in Panhellenic Hall. The housing is upper class, suite-style and requires a meal plan. Interfraternity Council: Most fraternities reside in university-owned and managed housing at the Fraternity Complex. The Fraternity Complex is an upper-class housing facility with community bathrooms and does not require a meal plan. There are some fraternities who reside off campus. First-year students are not allowed by university policy to reside in an on-campus or off-campus fraternity house, and second-year students are not allowed to reside in the off campus, non-University provided Greek Housing. National Pan-Hellenic Council: On-campus chapter meeting and hang-out space is provided. The students may choose to live on or off campus. Like any club a student may join at UCM, fees are associated with being Greek. Unlike other clubs, after the student graduates, he or she is a lifetime member of that Greek organization, continuing the benefits of being Greek. Each chapter at UCM will provide payment plan options to meet every member’s needs, so don’t let cost get in the way of the opportunities being Greek can provide.
