Place Value Project
Dear Parents/Students,
This project will be completed in class. A sufficient amount of time will be provided for all students to work on their projects/assignments in
class. Students are expected to be prepared and put forth their best effort in classroom work. Students will be required to complete this
class project as homework, if they don’t put forth their best effort and manage their time effectively.
In this project, each student has $50 dollars for their budget to spend on their school supplies this year. They will complete the following
task:
1. Look through newspapers, magazines, or advertisements and find at least 5 items for school supplies to purchase
2. Cut out the pictures of the items, including the price.
3. Record each of the five numbers that you find in a place value chart. Then, write each number in standard, expanded, and word
form.
4. Correctly round each decimal number to a whole number. Then, write the estimated cost (the estimated amount should less than or
equal to $50 dollars)
5. Show all your work on each subtraction of decimal problems; subtract coupon from original price to get price after discount
6. Show all your work on addition of decimal problems
7. Add all five items, after the discounts for the final cost
8. List the price from the least to the greatest
9. Use the template to help you organize the information on the poster
