Moulsecoomb Primary School is now offering practical, hands-on activities that cover Stone Age –Iron Age life and meet many aspects of the new curriculum for pupils. The school grounds have a range of replica historical buildings that provide a perfect venue for outdoor learning and a great way to bring history alive. “Brilliant roundhouses that look so authentic. It really brought our topic to life and it made me feel like I was in a different era.” – Teacher Workshops on offer include: Archaeological excavation How do archaeologists know where to discover our past? What evidence did Prehistoric people leave behind? What is an artefact? Find the answers to these and many more questions as you join us to study and uncover the clues. “My child really enjoyed the archaeological dig and it has inspired him to become a historian.” Parent Food, Farming, Foraging Travel the school grounds, identify edible and medicinal plants. Use your senses to touch, smell and taste. Compare Hunting and Gathering with early farming. What animals were domesticated? How did they benefit humans? Details and availability of technologies to be discussed when booking. Neolithic Stone Carving Discover the strange and wonderful carved balls Neolithic man left to amaze us. Think about their use or significance, then create your own replica using clay and natural materials to decorate. Ceramics/ Pottery Study ancient pottery sherds from a real archaeological excavation. Discover how prehistoric pottery was made. Focus on the styles and techniques then recreate an individual or whole class coil pot to display at your school. Prehistoric art Journey back in time to the last Ice Age. Imagine the animals that would be sharing your world. Learn how to make natural paints and brushes to record your hunt. Make a wall hanging to take back to your school. Fire making Experiment with a range of tools used to create fire by friction and percussion. Discover the changes that fire made to the lives of Prehistoric people. Can you produce fire from a spark or ember? “I loved sparking the steel. I never knew that you could make fire that way.” Adornments Prehistoric people used many natural resources to decorate their bodies for personal adornment and social symbolism. Learn how they made jewellery and make a replica bone necklace to take back to school. Cordage Look at examples of ways that early humans used cord or string. Learn how to extract fibres from natural plant materials and how to process them to make a piece of string. We can also offer a guided walk to Hollingbury Hill fort, a local Iron-Age Settlement. “This was great.
