God?
The Crucifix
The crucifix reminds Jesus of the death of Jesus on the cross. They
believe that His death was for all people and was the greatest act of
love. His resurrection was the overcoming of death and sin, so bringing
new life and hope to the world.
The Mezuzah
The mezuzah is found on the front door of many Jewish homes. It
contains a copy of the first two verses of the Shema and reminds
Jews of the oneness of God, and His presence as they go about their
daily lives.
Acts of Worship
General

Most religions see prayer as a way of communicating with God. This can
be done communally or in private.

Preaching and teaching is also important as it helps believers to develop
their faith and share their belief with the wider community.

Worship takes place daily or at regular times in the week. Again, it can
be communal or private.

Vocation: the sense of ‘calling’ by God to do something, as a career or
voluntary activity.
Christianity

Most Christians see Sunday as a holy day and a time for communal worship.

Some denominations (group) will
have a communion or Eucharist service every Sunday, whilst others on
set Sundays in the month.

Preaching and teaching generally
forms part of an act of worship in a
church.

Private devotions—prayer; reading
the Bible, meditation—are
encouraged on a daily basis.
Why is worship important?
Judaism

Shabbat (Sabbath day) is the
Jewish day of worship.

Shabbat starts at sunset on Friday
and continues until sunset on
Saturday.

The Shabbat ceremony takes place
in the home and many Jews will attend the synagogue for worship on
Saturday morning.

Other acts of worship take place in
the home (for example celebrating
festivals)

Jews also carry out acts of daily
prayer, sometimes following a set
pattern of morning, afternoon and
evening.

‘Worship is pointless’
Do you agree? Give reasons for your answer showing that you have
thought about more than one point of view. You must include references
to religious beliefs in your answer.
Prayer and worship often
inspire people to greater
things.
Believers feel a sense of
Responsibility to their God or
faith.
Worship brings people in the
community together and helps
support individuals in their
lives.
Worship is just a ritual that
people go through and has no
actual benefit.
Whilst meeting together with
people who believe the same
thing might benefit, there is
no reason for the actions.
Worshipping in special
buildings just divides the
community and separates
people according to religion
Worship enables believers to
do things for the benefit of
others e.g. serving those in
need
Even when serving others,
religious believers are just
doing it to gain some merit or
reward
