Review the meanings of words within definitions, such as immigrants, distinct, and dissenters. Write each vocabulary term in large print on poster board or chart paper. Read the definitions aloud and have students write the definitions and create an illustration that captures the meaning of the term on the poster board. Write descriptive words or phrases in four to six outer circles. (Possible Answers: religious, tolerance, William Penn, good relations with Native Americans, settled Pennsylvania) One American’s Story William Penn, who established Pennsylvania, was aware that earlier English colonists had not treated Native Americans with respect. Writing from England, Penn promised Native Americans that the people of his colony would behave differently. He visited Lenape villages and even learned their language. Penn’s Treaty with the Indians by Edward Hicks The Quakers Quakers, a group of Protestant dissenters, did develop a good relationship with tribes in Pennsylvania. The Quakers also accepted people who tolerance, had different religious beliefs. This helped to create a climate of tolerance or acceptance of different opinions, in the prosperous Middle Colonies of New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. 3 Teach A Prosperous Region Think, Pair, Share A Prosperous Region • How did geography and climate affect the growth of the Middle Colonies? (People were drawn to the region’s harbors and fertile land.) KEY QUESTION Why did the cities of the Middle Colonies grow so rapidly? The Middle Colonies had much to offer in addition to a climate of tolerance. Immigrants were drawn to the region’s productive land. Among the immigrants who came to the Middle Colonies were Dutch and German farmers. Their skills, knowledge, and hard work produced an abundance of foods. The Colonies Develop 111 • Main Ideas and Details How did the attitudes of the Quakers affect the Middle Colonies? (The Quakers had good relationships with Native Americans, so there were few conflicts; the Quakers’ tolerance attracted settlers.)
