To assess your summer reading, you may choose one of the following projects. Your project should show your depth of
understanding of the book. I must be able to tell you read the book!
1. In the News – Create the front page of a newspaper with articles
and pictures that tell about the events and characters in the book
you read. You could create news articles about the conflicts in
the story or an editorial from the viewpoint of a character. The
articles should cover events throughout the book. The title of the
newspaper should be something appropriate to the book. The
minimum requirement is five articles with 3-5 sentences each.
You can also add pictures, ads, weather reports, etc.

2. Dear Diary – Make a diary or journal that might have been
written by one of the characters in your book. The entries should
share events from the story, as well as the character’s thoughts
and feelings about the events. The entries should cover events
throughout the book. At a minimum, you must write at least five
diary entries with 3-5 sentences each. You should also decorate
the diary in an artistic manner.

3. Comic Book – Turn the book you read into a comic book,
complete with comic book style illustrations and dialogue
bubbles. Your comic strip should cover the main events of the
book and must have at least 10 squares/panels. If you pre-plan
using the plot chart, you should be able to make an excellent
comic strip that covers the entire book!

4. Picture Book – Create a picture book version of the book you read
that would appeal to a younger audience. Your picture book
should cover the main events of the book and must have at least
10 pages. If you pre-plan using the plot chart, you should be able
to make an excellent picture book that covers the entire book!

5. Book in a Bag – Collect ten items that have some significance to
the story. Place the items in a brown paper bag. Think outside the
box…the items do not have to be in the story; instead they could
symbolize or represent something in the story. Make sure that
each item is unique. On a separate sheet of paper, write three
sentences for each item, explaining how the item relates to the
story.

6. That’s a Rap – Retell the story with your own words through rap.
Your lyrics should be written in lines like poetry and should
include an illustration related to the book. You should have at
least 20 lines. If you pre-plan using the plot chart, you should be
able to create an excellent rap that covers the entire book.

7. It’s All a Game – Create a board game based on your book. You
must include at least five specific obstacles or struggles the
characters faced in the book as part of your game. Your
completed project should include a game board, game pieces,
and instructions on how to play – everything that is needed for
someone to play the game.
