Visit of an Author
We were just on our way to our third period lesson, or so I thought. As soon as I stepped
right outside the Spanish classroom, we were ushered into the neighboring drama room by a
few teachers. A few asked “Why are we here?” and a ma’am replied “We have an author
visiting our school!” I had heard the buzz, and had even caught a glimpse of Ms. Dalmia. But
to hear her speak and ask one of the many tempting questions that were floating around in
my head, this was going to be quite an interesting session!
Ms. Dalmia was lead into the room by Ms. Dimpu Sharma and Ms. Bandana Sen . I
held my pen over my notebook like a gun ready to fire, except my pistol was only going to
be firing words. I waited patiently for the lady to start speaking…
But she didn’t!
Instead, she said that she would love to learn about us first! We passed around the mike
and everyone said aloud their names, favorite books, and favorite movies or TV shows. No
one was missed, and everyone learned something about another person. Or at least I hope
they did! After the ice was broken, Ms. Dalmia began with her long journey from acting out
stories with puppets to writing short stories and books. Along the way, she also explained
to us about publishing houses, as well as editors, and her experiences with them. She also
explained briefly about blogs and protagonists. Ms. Dalmia talked about her published works
as well. She told us a brief outline of the story “Life is Perfect” and even how to start a
story: by first working out characters, then creating scenes and developing dialogue, which
must have helped a few understand the building blocks of a story. The highlight was when
Ma’am gave two very useful tips to the aspiring writers among us:
When you think of a great idea, write it down or store it somewhere. Every idea is
worth keeping. Aren’t they though? They are like precious treasures that we
can’t lose!
It is absolutely okay to copy if you are just going to write a story. You can keep it to
yourself (can’t you?) “Dip into your own life and TV shows and write!” This motivates me to go rewrite my favorite episode… Using ideas from your own lives is
extremely okay!
And that was our session with Ms. Dalmia. She closed by answering a few questions and
gave us her email. It was a fun session. Almost everyone got to speak, some more than
once, but I hope everyone listened. What I loved best are two thoughts Ms. Dalmia shared
with us:
“I like to tell people I was born with a pen in my mouth” Because she loves writing that
much!
“As a writer, trust yourself” Because only YOU know what’s good for your story and maybe
also your editor!
The session closed with a few copies of The Killer App and Other Paranormal Stories, a book which has one of Ms. Dalmia’s stories, available for purchase. Many of us
flocked to the little table, and I don’t think I have seen that many people crowding around
for a single book! Was I one of them? Suprisingly, no. I’m going to wait a while, and Flipkart “Life is Perfect” because it really is!
Ms. Dalmia has published one book, “Life is Perfect” and as many as twenty other short
stories and other works. To a few who were eager, she told us her email. And wouldn’t it
be fun to tell your family you have a real author as a pen pal? So if you wish, email Ms.
Dalmia at [email protected]
