MediShield is a low-cost catastrophic illness
insurance plan that helps patients cope with
large bills and covers up to 60% for class B2 and
C bills. If you are in the middle-income group who
prefers class A or B1 or private wards, you should
consider buying supplementary Medisave-approved
insurance plans for additional benefits, in addition to
basic MediShield
How much can you claim from MediShield?
This depends on your plan and these 3 factors:
Deductibles, Co-insurance and Claimable Limits
Deductible refers to the initial amount of the bill that
you would have to pay before insurance kicks in.
Co-insurance refers to the portion of the total claimable
amount that you would have to pay in addition to the
deductible. You can use Medisave to pay for both the
deductible and co-insurance portion.
Claimable Limits refers to the portion of the bill that
you can claim, which is subject to the maximum limits
per day for: hospitalization, surgical procedures,
surgical implants, and approved specific treatments
and outpatient treatments
The hospital will submit the MediShield claim to
the CPF Board on your behalf upon discharge. The

If you earn more than $3,200 a month,, you will receive
slightly less subsidies for class B2 and C, based on a
sliding scale. Your monthly income will be based on your
total salary received over the last-available 12-month
period. It will not be based on just the last month’s pay
Those who do not have a monthly income, such as
housewives, retirees and children, and live in HDB flats
or properties with annual values of $11,000 or less, will
also get full subsidies
Subsidy for PRs will be 10%-points less than citizens of
the same income level
If you are discharged from Class A/B1 ward, you will be
charged at private rates (i.e. no subsidy) for follow-ups
at Specialist Outpatient Clinics (SOC)
If you are discharged from Class B2/C ward, you will be
charged at subsidised rates4 for follow-ups at SOCs

• In Jan 2009, means-testing will kick in. You can still
choose your ward class and be admitted to Class C or B2
ward. Depending on your income level, you will still be
heavily subsidised but at different rates

DEPOSIT PRIOR TO ADMISSION

deposit, unless your estimated hospital bill is
above the Medisave withdrawal limit or your
Medisave balances are insufficient
For those opting for Class A/B1 wards, a cash
deposit is required because Medisave cannot
cover the full bill
Patients seeking admission to Class A or B1 wards
and who are unable to pay the deposit should reconsider their choice of ward
Deposit amount may be decreased or exempted
if you produce a Letter of Guarantee from your
employer or insurance company in Singapore
Patients can be assured that no one would be

3Ms -MEDISAVE / MEDISHIELD / MEDIFUND
• Medisave
Medisave is a national medical savings scheme to
help individuals save part of their money for either
their personal medical expenses or their immediate
family members’ hospitalisation bills. Medisave
can be used to pay for hospitalisation, day surgery
and certain approved outpatient treatment,
including renal dialysis and chemotherapy
To use Medisave, you need to complete the
Medisave Authorisation Form and hand it to the
hospital for processing
Medisave covers:
Medical/ surgical inpatient cases
$450 per day for hospital and treatment charges,
including a maximum of $50 for doctor’s daily
attendance fees, and an additional fixed limit for
surgical procedures ranging from $150 to $5,000
Approved day surgeries
Up to $300 per day for the hospital and treatment
charges, including a maximum of $30 for the
