Nighty-Night! Some animals sleep upside-down. Why do they do that? A bat sleeps upside-down to protect itself from predators. If they have to fly away at a moment’s notice, their wings aren’t strong enough to quickly lift them in the air. When they hang upside down, they can fall into flight and get away quickly from danger. When manatees snooze in the water, they sleep upside-down. Manatees are mammals and don’t have gills to breathe underwater. The manatee’s nostrils stay just above the surface so they get the air they need to survive. A sloth is a very slow mammal that sleeps 18 hours a day. They hang upside-down in trees and tend to look just like another tree branch, fooling predators. If you read this issue’s cartoon featuring Mid-Minnie, you may be wondering if pennies really do have some kind of magic power. Actually, this is really just a superstition that can be traced back hundreds of years when ancient cultures thought that metal was a gift from the gods. Like most superstitions, there are variations on the rule. Some believe that picking up a penny is good luck, but leaving it means that “bad luck will come to thee.” Others believe that a found penny is good luck, but only if you find it heads up. In Northern Ireland it was once believed that if you found a coin it was probably owned by a fairy or a leprechaun. The tradition said you’re supposed to spit on the coin and throw it in the bushes. This will return it to its rightful owner, who will grant you good luck as a thank-you!
