Curriculum
Inordertofullyprepareourstudentstogainaccesstohighquality,competitivehighschoolsandcollegesandprepare
themforthechallengesanddemandsofengagedcitizenship,CityArts&PrepembracestheCommonCoreState
StandardsandtheNextGenerationScienceStandards.Ourprogramisintentionallydemandingaswedevelopcreative,
hard-working,criticallythinkingandthoughtfulstudents.
MathInstructionalModel:
MathematicsinstructionatCityArts&Prepensuresthatthereisasignificantfocusonprioritizedtopicsateachgrade
level,deepeningstudents’foundationsandensuringasolidunderstandingofeachconcept,ahighdegreeofprocedural
skillandfluency,andtheabilitytoapplythemaththeyknowtosolveproblemsinsideandoutsidetheclassroom.The
majorworkofeachgradeisasfollows:
K-2:Concepts,skillsandproblemsolvingrelatedtoadditionandsubtraction
3-5:Concepts,skillsandproblemsolvingrelatedtomultiplicationanddivisionofwholenumbersand
fractions.
6:Ratiosandproportionalrelationships,andearlyalgebraicexpressionsandequations

Furthermore,contentiscoherent,linkingtopicsandthinkingacrossgradestocreateconceptualbridgesandenable
studentstoapplyconceptsacrossnovelsituations.Toensurethatstudentscultivateadeep,authenticcommandofthe
mathematicconcepts,teachersbalanceconceptualunderstanding,proceduralskillsandfluency,andapplication.
StudentsatCityArts&Prepwillalsodevelopall8oftheStandardsforMathematicalPracticesduringtheircareersas

Weaccomplishthisbyengaginginatleast60minutesofmathematics-basedinstructioneachday.Ineachgradelevel,
studentspartakeinfluencypractice,teacher-drivenlessons,teacherguidedpractice,independentapplication,formalor
informalassessments,andintervention.IngradesK-8th,EurekaMathservesasthefoundationalcurriculumteachers
usetoguidemathinstructionandensurethatallPARCCrelatedcontentisexplicitlytaughtpriortoPARCC
administration.STMathisusedtoboostrigor,conceptualapplication,technologyskillsandproblemsolvingingrades
3rd-8th.
ELAInstructionalModel:
Byusingadevelopmentallyappropriatebalancedliteracymodel,teachersofferstudentscomprehensive,best-practices
alignedELAinstructionthatincorporatestheCommonCoreELAshiftsandaddressesthelearningneedsofallstudents.
Inallgradelevels,studentswillbuildknowledgeabouttheworldaroundthembyengaginginrichandrigorousevidence

basedconversationsthroughatruebalanceofbothinformationalandliterarytexts.Teacherswillprovidetimeand
supportforstudentstoengagewithgradeappropriateandcompellingtexts,modelingandfacilitatingstudents’close
reading.Studentswillalsobuildthetransferablevocabularytheyneedinordertoaccessbothgradelevelcomplextexts

booksandnovelsfromclassroomlibraries.Thisissacredtime
wherestudentsareexpectedtohaveeyesonthetextforthe
majorityofthetime.Inaddition,weensureintellectual
accountability(writingaboutreading)or1:1readingconferences
withtheteacheratleastonceaweek.

Full-classlessonsincorporateCommonCoreELAshiftsthrough
Lessons

frequency/multiplemeaningvocabulary)toensurestudentsare
developingtheiracademicvocabularyandaccesstocomplex
texts.
Writer’sWorkshop
Thisinstructionentailsthewritingprocess:pre-writing,writing,
drafting.Instructionistargetedonpersuasive,argumentativeand
expositorywriting.Writingpracticehelpsstudentstopreparefor
thedemandsofPARCC,includingrespondingtoperformance
basedquestions.
Centers
Centersallowstudentstoworkonskillsandgiveteachersan
opportunitytoworkwithsmallgroups.Centersworkmay
include,butisnotlimitedto:listening,magneticwords,RAZ,

Assessmentstakeplaceinavarietyofways,suchaspassage
practice,PARCC-likepracticetests,SupportCoach,exitslips,ANet,
andteacher-createdassessments.AllstudentsingradesK-8will
beassessedusingF&Patleastthreetimesayeartodetermine
readingproficiencyandenableteacherstotrackstudents’growth
andrespondappropriately.
HomeworkExpectations
HomeworkisanintegralpartofourcollegepreparatoryprogramatCityArts&Prep.Webelievethathomeworkhelps
studentsdevelopasenseofpersonalresponsibility,self-discipline,andeffectivestudy/workhabitsthatwillassistthem
throughouttheirschoolyearsandintheiradultlife.Itisameansofreviewingandreinforcingconceptslearnedinclass.
Homeworkwillbeassignednightlyandgradedhomeworkwillcomprise10%ofastudent’soverallgradeforeachcore
subjectarea.
Homework is defined as tasks assigned by teachers to students that are meant to be carried out during non-school
hours. Examples of homework may include, but are not limited to: completing worksheets, textbook reading, visiting
museumsorotherplaceswithaneducationalfocus,writingessays,readingnewspapersand/ormagazines(onlineand
print),searchingtheworldwideweb,readingandwritingpoems,readingnovels,andtakingnaturetours.Homeworkis
assignedeachnightincludingFriday.
FamilyResponsibility
Asapartnerinyourchild’seducation,weexpectfamiliestoplayaroleinsupportingtheirstudents’homework
completion.Youcanhelpathomeby:
• Fosteringgoodstudyhabits
• Providingencouragementandsupport
• Helpingwithhomework(butdonotcompletinghomeworkforyourchild)
• Developinganightlyhomeworkroutine(atthesametimeeachday)
• Identifyingaspecific,quiet,well-lit,organizedplacetodohomework
• Ensuringthatassignmentsarecompletedneatly
• Supplyingstudentwithnecessarymaterials(pencil,paper,dictionary,calculator,etc)
• Familiarizingyourselfwithateacher‘shomeworkpolicies
• Collectingmissedassignmentswhenyourstudentisabsent(bydeadlinegiven)
Communication
Students are expected to record their homework assignments on their daily Wolf Report at the beginning of each
instructionalblock.Parentsshouldrequirethatstudentsshowthewrittenhomeworkassignmentasrecordedinclass
withtheteacher.Pleasecheckwithyourstudentdailytoseeiftheirassignmentshavebeenrecordedandcompleted
appropriately.Pleasefeelfreetoconsultwithyourchild‘steacherwheneverthereisaquestionabouthomework.

CityArts&Prepprovidesarigorousacademicexperienceforthescholarsthatweserve.Tosupportparentsandfamilies
inengagingintheacademicprogressoftheirchildren,weuseagradingpolicythatisrigorous,fair,andalsotransparent.
Allteachersassigngradesinthefollowingcategoriesandwiththeprescribedweights:
CoreAreaSubjectTeachers
CoresubjectareasincludeReading/ELA,Math,SocialStudiesandScience.
• 50%-Assessments-(FormativeandSummative,Unit,ProgramandTeacherDesigned,Quizzes,ExamsandExit
Tickets)
• 30%-Classwork/Projects–(PerformanceTasks,Projects,Classwork,InterdisciplinaryUnitAssignments)
• 10%-Homework–(AssignedDaily)
• 10%-Participation–(Asobservedbytheteacherinclassdaily)
Onaweeklybasis,coresubjectareateacherswilluploadabout4gradestoPowerSchool-onegradeineachofthe
mandatedcategoriesforeachscholar–andineachsubjecttaught.ThatwouldmeanthateachKindergartenthrough8th
gradeMathstudentwouldreceivethe4mandatedgradesonetimeforeachweekthatsheisinMathclassforatotalof
4Mathgrades.Shewouldadditionallyreceivethosesame4categorygradesineachcoresubjectarea.
Non-CoreSubjectAreas
Interventionsandothernon-coresubjectareasincludeGym/PE,WritingandtheArts,whicharegradedaccordingtothe
samebreakdownshowabove.
On a weekly basis, enrichment and other non-core subject students will receive 2 grades, one grade in two of the
mandated categories for each scholar. The teacher may choose which two categories to apply new grades to making
sure that all four categories are entered evenly over the quarter. That would mean that a student taking PE would
receive2ofthemandatedgrades,oneeachintwocategoriesforeachweekthatheisinPEclass.
AssigningGrades
AllAssessments,PerformanceTasksandProjectsarerequiredtobecomprehensivelyreviewedagainstpresetcriteria
and/orrubrics,gradedaccordinglyandimmediatelyuploadedintoPowerSchool.Homework,classworkandother
assignmentsmaybequicklyreviewedforcompleteness;groupgraded,peergradedandassignedoneofthefollowing:
• agradeascalculatedaratingofPass/Fail
• aratingofUnsatisfactory/Satisfactory/OutstandingaratingofCheck/Check+/Check-
Each of these designations can hold a predetermined value within the grade book. The weekly Participation grade

subjectareastaughtduringthequarter.AtCityArts&Prep,westaggertheinstructionofScienceandSocialStudies.
Thismayleadtoquarterswhereallcoresubjectareasarenotreported.Whileteachersmaychoosetorecordgradesin
allofthecoresubjectareas,forPreKclasses,gradesarerequiredforonlyReading/ELAandMath.Whileteachersmay
choosetorecordgradesinallofthecoresubjectareas,startingatgradeKandgoingtograde8,gradesarerequiredfor
Reading/ELA,MathandoneofeitherScienceorSocialStudies.
ExplainingCategoryWeights
Thecategoriesandweightsthathavebeenselectedareinlinewiththetrajectorythatwehavechosenforourscholars.
ItisourgreatesthopethatgraduatesofCityArts&Prep7PrepwilleventuallygoontoattendandcompletetheCollege
orUniversityoftheirchoice.
• 50%-Assessments-CollegeandUniversitiesaswellashighrankinghighschoolsuseperformanceonexams
andassessmentstoevaluateinitialcollegereadiness.
• 30%-Classwork/Projects–Immediatelyfollowingassessments,interdisciplinaryprojects,performancetasks
andassignmentscompletedingroupsandteamswillbeusedtoformgrades.
• 10%-Homework–Asignificantamountoftheworkincollegewillbecompletedoutofclassandindependently.

AtCityArts&Prepwebelievethatregularmonitoringofstudentprogressisessentialtoprovidinganacademicprogram
thatistargetedandappropriateforeverychild.Weusearangeofacademicassessmenttools,selectedfortheirvalidity
andtheirdevelopmentalappropriateness,toensurethatourstudentsareprogressingtowardmasteryofgradelevel

Allstudentsinpreschoolthrough8thgradewillreceivesmallgroupinstruction.Inearlychildhood

studentsreceivesmallgroupinstructionduringGuidedReading,Math,andtheFocusInterventionblock.In
middleschool,studentsreceivesmallgroupinstructionduringGuidedReading,Math,IndependentReading,and
theFocusInterventionblock.Insomecases,studentswillbepulledoutinordertoreceiveadditionalsupports.
Theremaybetimeswhen students needextra supporttodotheirbest.AtCityArts&Prep,ourteachersregularly
monitortheprogressofallstudentsandquicklyfocusonstudentswhoneedextra support.Withthesupportoftheir
gradelevelteam,teacherscreatetargetedinterventionstosupportstudentsinneedofassistance.Aftermultiple
roundsofsupport,astudentnotmaking adequate progress maybe referred to theStudentSupport Team(“SST”). 12
CityArts&PreputilizestheStudentSupportProcessasamulti-tieredproblem-solvingapproachtosupport
individualstudentneeds.TheStudentSupportProcessprovidessuggestionsforcomprehensive,classroom-based,
student-centeredinterventionsanddetermineswhetherornotachildshouldbereferredforfurtherevaluation
basedondatagatheredthroughouttheSSTprocess.Ifyoubelieveyourchildmaybeinneedofinterventionsor
furtherevaluationtodetermineifadisabilityispresent,pleasecontacttheschool’sDirectorofStudentSupport
Servicesinwriting.
TheSSTprovideshelptoteachers,parentsandstudentswithacademicandbehaviordifficulties.TheSSTisaformof
prevention,earlyintervention,referral,andsupportforstudentswithidentifiedneedsthatmaypreventthemfromfully
benefittingfromtheireducationalexperience.Interventionsuniquetothespecificneedsofthestudentareprescribed,
andinterventionmodificationsaremadebaseduponthestudent’sprogressandfurtherneed.Theprogressmadeby
studentswillbemonitoredutilizingaResponsetoIntervention(RtI)modelthroughouttheyearbyclassroomteachers
andotherspecialists.
StandingmembersoftheSSTincludetheDirectorofAcademics,DirectorofSchoolCulture,DirectorofStudentSupport
Services,theBehaviorSpecialist/SchoolSocialWorker,thestudent’sclassroomteacher,andother
specialist/interventionists.Thestudent’sparent/guardianisalwaysinformedofrecommendationsmadebytheSSTand
isinvitedtoattendtheSSTmeetings.
SpecialEducation
SpecialeducationprogrammingatCityArts&Prepisstructuredtoprovidespecializedinstruction,support,and
relatedservicestostudentswithdisabilitiesbasedonastudent’sIndividualizedEducationProgram(IEP).In
accordancewithIDEA,CityArts&Prepensuresthatallenrolledstudentswithdisabilitiesreceiveafreeappropriate
publiceducation(FAPE)intheleastrestrictiveenvironment(LRE).
An integral part of City Arts & Prep mission is to promote the inclusion of students with special needsin general
education classrooms and activitiesin order to provide high quality instruction to allstudents. To meet this goal, City
Arts&Prep is committed to:
• Makingeverystudenttheresponsibilityofeverystaffmember.
• Usingthebestpedagogicalpracticesforthebenefitofallstudents.
• Involvingfamiliesasessentialpartners.
• Implementingaccommodationsandmodifications,relatedservices,andsupplementaryaidesasneededfor
studentswithspecialneeds.
• Adheringtospecialeducationregulationsandrequirementsatalltimes.
• AligningIEPgoalswiththegeneraleducationcurriculumtoensureaccess,authenticity,andrelevance.
• Educating students in the Least Restrictive Environment possible, removing them from the general
educationsettingonlywhendoingsoisnecessarytoprovideappropriateinstruction.
Parentsorguardianswhohavespecificquestionsregardingpolicies,procedures,orservicesforstudentswith
disabilitiesatCityArts&PrepshouldcontacttheDirectorofStudentSupportServices.
SocialWorkers
The closerelationships that develop betweenCityArts&Prep students andstaffmake it comfortableforstudentsto
seekadviceandcounselfromtheirteachersandschooladministratorswhentheyhave a personal problem. Thereare
times,however, when a studentmay wish toconsultaprofessional therapist. CityArts&Prep socialwork program is
committed to meeting thepsychological,social,andeducationalneedsofstudents.

Inkeepingwithitshighacademicexpectations,CityArts&Prephasclearbutrigorousstandardsforpromotion.
Promotiondecisionsarebasedonevidenceofmasteryofgradelevelcontentincludingthestudent’sgrades,

• Atfive(5)absences(orfourabsenceswithinthefirsttwomonthsofschool),CityArts&Prepadministrationwill
require a meeting with the student’s family and the Director of School Culture, during which an Attendance
Pledgewillbeestablishedaimedatensuringattendancepatternsimprove.Homevisitswillbeconductedas
needed.
• Atseven(7)absences,CityArts&PrepadministrationwillrequireafamilymeetingwiththeDirectorofSchool
CulturetodiscussviolationoftheAttendancePledge.Homevisitswillbeconductedasneeded.
• At ten (10) unexcused absences, City Arts & Prep will notify Child and Family Services Administration (CFSA),
notify OSSE and send the student’s parent a letter, under signature of the Chief of the Metropolitan Police
Department,notifyingtheparentthatheorshemaybeinviolationoftheschoolattendancerequirementsand
subjecttoprosecutionunderDistrictofColumbialaws.
• In cases of excessive absences (the incidence of students missing more than 10% of school days, including

victimandtoprotectthemfromfurtherincidentsifnecessary.Examplesofsuchstepstakenincludedesignatingastaff
membertoserveasthatallegedvictim’s“safe”person,alteringtheallegedbully/bullies’seatingorscheduletoreduce
accesstotheallegedvictimorcreatingasafetyplaninconsultationwiththeallegedvictim.Onceaninvestigationis
concluded,furtherstepswillbetakenasneededtoassurethecontinuedsafetyofthevictimfromadditionalincidents
ofbullyingorretaliation.
Onceareportofbullyinghasbeenreceivedbyanagency,thefollowinggroupswillbenotifiedasneededbyOfficeof
StudentSupportServicessolongas,intheabsenceoflegalimperative,theparentorguardian’swrittenconsentis
obtainedpriortonotification.
Parentsandguardians:CityArts&Prepwillnotifytheparentsorguardiansofvictims,bullies,andifappropriate,
witnessestoanincidentofbullyingbehavioraboutthenatureoftheincidentandtheproceduresandstepsinplacefor
respondingtoit.TheOfficeofStudentSupportServiceswilldetermineifparentsorguardiansshouldbeinformedprior
tooraftertheinvestigationofanincident.
Schools:CityArts&Prepwillnotifytheschools(earlychildhood,upperelementary,middleschool)ofallvictimsand
bulliesinanincidentofbullyingtoensurethatyoutharenotvictimizedacrossagenciesandthatcomprehensiveservice
andprotectioncanbeprovidedtobulliesandvictims.
Lawenforcementagencies:IfCityArts&Prepdeterminesthatthereportedincidentmayinvolvecriminalactivityor
thebasisforcriminalcharges,informationabouttheincidentmustbeconveyedtotheappropriatelawenforcement
authorities.AspartofmakingthisdeterminationTheOfficeofStudentSupportServicesmaywishtoconsultwitheither
alawenforcementofficerorlegalcounsel.Lawenforcementshallonlybecontactedifallotheravailableremedieshave
beenexhausted.
CityArts&Prepwillnotifythesegroupsofincidentsofbullyingonlytotheextentallowedbylaw.Notificationwillbe
undertakensolelytoensurethatservicesareprovidedtovictimsandbulliesandtoprotectvictimsfromfurtheror
sustainedvictimization.CityArts&Prepwillmakeeveryefforttoprotecttheconfidentialityofthosewhoreport
bullyingincidents.
TheOfficeofStudentSupportServicesisresponsibleforinvestigatingreportsofbullyingandcanbereachedat
202.269.4646.Aninvestigationofanincidentwillbeinitiatednomorethanonedayafterreceiptofareportofbullying
andwillconcludenolaterthan30daysafterthereceiptofsuchareport.AspartoftheinvestigationCityArts&Prep,
staffwillinterviewanyinvolvedorrelevantpartiesincludingallegedvictims,bullies,witnesses,staff,parentsor
guardians.
TheOfficeofStudentSupportServiceswillprovideconfidentialityasfaraspossibletorelevantpartiesaspartofthe
investigation,andinformallrelevantpartiesthatretaliationforreportingactsofbullyingisprohibited.Writtenrecords
oftheinvestigationprocessshouldbemaintainedandmaybeincludedinthepreventiondatabasetogenerateamore
accuratepictureofbullyingbehaviorsatCityArts&Prep.Wherenecessary,provisionswillbemadetoincludethe
adviceoflegalcounsel.Ininvestigatinganincidentofbullying,CityArts&Prepwillseektoensurethatthereported
incidentisoneofvictimization,asignofbullying,ratherthanofconflict.Thuswheninvestigatingareportedincident
CityArts&Prepwillattempttodetermine,throughinterviewingthevictim,whatmechanismsthevictimhadandhas
accesstoforhaltingtheincidentthatoccurred,andpreventingfuturesuchinstances.Ifthevictimreportsafeworno
mechanismsforendingtheincidentorconstructivelydealingwithfutureinstances,thatinformationwillserveas

compelling,thoughnotconclusiveevidencethatthereportedincidentwasanincidentofbullying.
CityArts&PRepischargedwithmakingdeterminationsastowhetherareportedincidentconstitutesacaseofbullying.
Thesedeterminationswillbemadeinconsiderationofthetotalityofthefactsandthecircumstancessurroundingthe
incident.IftheOfficeofStudentSupportServicesdeterminesthatanincidentofbullyinghasoccurred,theyshouldtake
theresponsestepsenumeratedinthetertiarypreventionplantopreventtherecurrenceofanincidentandrestorethe
safetyofavictim.
IfCityArts&Prepdeterminesthatadditionalsupportisneededtoconductathoroughandequitableinvestigationthey
willcontactthecitywidepreventioncoordinator.
SanctionsandRemediesforBullying
CityArts&Preprecognizesthatforsanctionstobeaneffectivecomponentofabullyingpreventionplan,theymustbe
appliedconsistently,fairly,andequitably.Tothisend,CityArts&Prepshallensurethatstafffollowstheseguidelinesas
closelyaspossible,whileallowingforflexibilitytoadaptsanctionstoindividualcontexts.Furthermore,toensure
equitabilityinapplyingsanctions,measureswillbeappliedonagraduatedbasisdeterminedbythenatureofthe
offense,thedisciplinaryhistoryoftheyouthinvolved,andtheageanddevelopmentalstatusoftheyouthinvolved.

Deprivationofprivileges
Bansonparticipatinginoptionalactivities

Sanctionswillbeappliedwithinonedayofthedeterminationthatanincidentofbullyinghasoccurred,unlessanappeal
oftheincidentbythebullyhasbeenreceivedinthattimeasdescribedintheAppealssectionofthispolicy.Toensure
thatsingleincidentsofbullyingdonotbecomerecurringproblems,CityArts&Prepwillalwaysrefervictimsandbullies
involvedinanincidenttoservicesinadditiontoimposingsanctionsonbullies.
CityArts&Prepdoesnotendorsetheuseofpunitivestrategiesassociatedwith“zero-tolerance”policieswhenapplying
sanctionstoanincidentofbullying.CityArts&Prepshallcommunicatetoyouth,theconsequencesthatyouthcan
expectforparticipatinginbullyingbehavior.
Appeals(DCCode§2-1535.03(b)(8);§2-1535.04)
PartiesdissatisfiedbytheoutcomeofabullyinginvestigationmayappealthedeterminationoftheOfficeofStudent
SupportServicestotheOfficeoftheHeadofAcademics.Thisappealshouldbesubmittednolaterthan30daysafter
theinitialdetermination.Uponreceiptofanappeal,theOfficeoftheHeadofAcademicsmustconductasecondary
investigationwithin30daysofthereceiptofanappeal.This30daysmaybeextendeduptoanadditional15daysifthe
OfficeoftheHeadofAcademicssetsforthinwritingthereasonswhymoretimeisneededtoconductaninvestigation.
Additionally,uponthereceiptofanappeal,theOfficeoftheHeadofAcademicsmustinformthepartymakingthe
submissionoftheirabilitytoseekadditionalredressundertheDCHumanRightsAct.
Sexualharassmentisdefinedas,butnotlimitedtoverbalornonverbalunwelcomedsexualadvancesorsexualbehavior
thatsubstantiallyinterfereswithastudent’seducation,orcreatesanintimidatingorhostileenvironment.Sexual
harassmentisprohibitedatCityArts&Prep.
Cyberbullyingisdefinedastheuseofinformationandcommunicationtechnologytobully,embarrasses,threaten,or
harassanother.Italsoincludestheuseofinformationandcommunicationtechnologytoengageinconductorbehavior
thatisderogatory,defamatory,degrading,illegal,and/orabusive.
Theuseofcellphonesandothertechnology—includingcomputers,e-mailandsocialnetworkingsites—toharass,bully,

threatenordefameastudentoremployeeisspecificallyprohibited.Anystudentwhofeelss/heisavictimofcyber
bullyingshouldreporttheincidenttotheDeanofCulture.
Anystudentfoundcomplicitintheposting,sending,orexecutionofsuchmaterialwillbesubjecttodisciplinaryactionas
definedintheCityArts&PrepCodeofCharacter.
Threateningbehaviorisdefinedasanexpressedorimpliedthreat(verbally,physically,electronically,orinwriting)to
interferewith:1)thehealthorsafetyofanyindividualassociatedwithCityArts&Prep;2)withCityArts&Prep
property;or3)propertyonCityArts&Preppremisesbelongingtoothers.Anystudentwhoengagesinthreatening
behaviorwillbesubjecttoseriousdisciplinaryaction,includingsuspensionand/orexpulsion.
Threat/FalseThreat-Nostudentshallmakeanythreatthroughwrittenorverballanguage,sign,oractwhichconveysa
seriousexpressionofintenttocauseharmorviolence.Furthermore,nostudentshallmakeafalsethreatofharmor
violence,evenjokingly,whichcausesorisreasonablylikelytocausefearoradisruptiontoschoolactivities.Allthreats
andfalsethreatswillbesubjecttoseriousdisciplinaryaction.
Promotingfightingorotherviolentbehaviorisdefinedastheuseofpassiveoractive:resistance,noise,threat,fear,
intimidation,coercion,force,violence,recordingdevices,socialmedia,electronicdevices,oranyotherformofconduct
thatcausesthedisruptionofanylawfulfunction,mission,orprocessoftheschool.
Fightingisdefinedastheexertionofphysicalforcetoharmsomeoneorpotentiallyharmsomeone.Fightingisoneof
themostegregiousviolationsoftheCodeofCharacter.Ifastudentengagesinafight,whilerepresentingtheschool,
s/heissubjecttoseriousconsequences,includingexpulsion.
Unlesstheadministrationdetermines,withoutdoubt,thatanyparticipantinaphysicalaltercationisclearlydefending
himself/herselffromanaggressororaggressors,thenthephysicalaltercationwillbeconsideredafightinwhichall
partiesshareequalresponsibility.
AlloftheabovementionedbehaviorsareLevelCviolationsandmaybesubjecttoexpulsion.
Insteadofthreateningorfightingsomeone,thereareanumberofwaysthataconflictcanberesolved.Forexample:
• Inform your Dean, a security guard, a favorite teacher, or any other adult in the building and seek out conflict
resolution.
• Walkawayfromasituationthatappearstobeescalating,thenseekoutassistance.
• Countto10andtakedeepbreathsuntilyougetyouremotionsundercontrol.
• Ifyouhavedifficultymanagingyouranger,youcouldmeetwiththeschoolsocialworker.
• Requestmediationbetweenyouandtheotherpersonwithwhomyouhaveanissue.
Thesearejustafewsuggestionsthatenableapotentiallyviolentsituationfromescalating.
ChildNeglectandAbuse
Asprofessionalsworkinginafieldthatserveschildren,wehaveanethicalandlegalresponsibilitytoreport
suspectedchildneglectandabuse.ThelawrequireCityArts&PreptofileareportwiththeDistrictofColumbia
ChildandFamilyServicesAgency(CFSA)whenthere isreasonablecausetosuspectthatachildhasbeenorisin
dangerofbeingneglectedorabused,orwhenastudentischronicallyabsentfromschool.CFSAandthe
MetropolitanPoliceDepartmentareresponsibleforinvestigatingreportsofneglectandabuseandfor
determininghowacasewillberesolved.CityArts&PrepisnotrequiredtoinformfamilieswhenCFSAhasbeen
contacted.
Drugs,Alcohol,andTobacco
CityArts&Prepisasafeanddrug-freecampus.Drugs,drugparaphernalia,oritemspromoting druguseare

strictlyprohibited.A“no-tolerance”policywillbeappliedtostudentsfoundwithdrugsoralcohol.Additionally,
studentsarerequiredtotellaCityArts&Prepstaffmemberiftheyareawareofalcohol,drugs,drug
paraphernaliaoritemspromotingdrugsoralcoholoncampus.CityArts&Prepcampusisnon-smoking.Smoking
(includinge-cigarettesandmedicalmarijuana)isprohibitedinallbuildingsandon thegrounds.
EarlyDismissals
CityArts&Prepschooldayendsat4:00PM.Inordertominimizedisruptionsininstruction,weaskthatparentswait
untiltheendofthedaytopick-upscholars.Studentswithearlydismissalmissvaluableinstructionaltimeandinterrupt
thescheduleofourcommunity.Frequentearlydismissalswillresultinadministrativefollow-up.Ifaparentneedsto
pickupastudentpriorto4:00PM,weareaskingthatwebeinformedby12:00PMsowewillhavestudentsreadyfor
anearlyrelease.Itisdisruptivetoremovestudentsduring2:00PM-4:00PMasthisistheendofthedayanddismissal
time.Wewillnotpermitearlyreleasesafter2:00PMunlessthereisanemergency.
Enrollment
StudentsareenrolledaccordingtotheEnrollmentProceduressetforthbytheDCPublicCharterSchoolBoard.Tobe
enrolled,astudentmustcompleteallnecessarydocumentation,providecurrentproofofresidency,andmedicaland
immunizationrecords.Failuretoprovidenecessarydocumentationwillresultinalossofenrollmentslot.
CurrentstudentsmustcompleteanIntenttoEnrollformannuallybythesetdate.FailuretocompletetheIntentto

StudentsatCityArts&Prepmayparticipateinhorizon-broadening,off-campusfieldtripswhichareanintegral
partoftheireducation.AtCityArts&Prep,fieldtripsareconsideredaprivilegeandmaybeusedforincentive
purposes.Studentsmaylosethisincentiveasaresultofbehavioralorpunctualitychoices.Inorderforastudent
toattend,familiesmustsigntheappropriatetrippermissionform.
Toensurethatourstudentsareinasafeenvironmentatalltimes,anyparentorvolunteerwhochaperones
studentsonanyschool-sponsoredfieldtripmustundergoabackgroundcheckandasexoffendercheck.Parents

CityArts&Prepvaluestheinputofstudents,parentsandguardians,andencouragesparentstoofferfeedbackonany
aspectoftheschoolprogram.AqualityeducationalprogramforstudentsatCityArts&Prepcanbeachievedbestbyall
individualsworkingtogetherharmoniously.Therewillbetimes,however,whenanindividualmayfeeltheneedtofilea

theHeadofAcademics.Youmayattachdescriptiveorsupportiveinformationtotheform.Keepacopyoftheformand

Whenyourcomplaintformisreceivedattheschool,theHeadofAcademicswillcontactyouwithinfive(5)schooldays

providedDCPS.Nursingservicesinclude:healthassessments,healthcounseling,healthcarereferrals,emergencycare,
firstaid,andsupportivehealthandsafetyeducationforallstudentsandschoolpersonnel.
Thenurseortrainedstaffmayadministermedicationwithaphysician’sauthorizationandparentalconsent.Students
musthaveonfileamedicationauthorizationformthatcanbeobtainedfromthenurse.
StudentswillnotbeadmittedtotheHealthSuitewithoutavalidpassfromateacher.Thenursewillsignthepassnoting

s/heiseligibletobeinschool.Studentswillnotbepermittedtoreturntoschoolactivitywithoutaphysician’sclearance.
Immunizations
StudentsmustbeuptodateonallimmunizationsrecommendedbytheDistrictofColumbiaDOH.Ifyoudonotwant
yourchildimmunizedformedicalorreligiousreasons,youmustfillouttheappropriateexemptionformsavailablefrom
thenurse.Studentswhodonothavealloftheirimmunizationsuptodatewillnotbepermittedtoattendschool.
CommunicableDisease
TheDCDOHdoesnotpermitstudentstoremainatCityArts&Prepiftheyhaveacommunicablediseaseorsymptoms
ofacommunicabledisease.Parent(s)/guardian(s)shouldnotifytheschool’snursewithin24hoursafterthestudenthas
developedaknownorsuspectedcommunicabledisease.Ifastudentisfoundtohavesignsorsymptomsofa
communicabledisease,anoticewillbesenthomeindicatingthediseaseandthenatureoftheillness.Thenamesofthe

Step1
Within90daysoftheallegeddiscriminationorharassment,writtennoticeofthecomplaintmustbefiledwith
theindividualdesignatedabove.Complainantsmayusethecomplaintformattachedtothegrievance
procedure.Thewrittennoticemustincludethenatureofthecomplaint,thedate(s)oftheoccurrence,the
desiredresult,andmustbesignedanddatedbythepersonmakingthecomplaint.
Uponreceiptofthewrittennoticeofthecomplaint,thedesignatedindividualtowhomthecomplaintwas
submittedwillimmediatelyinitiateanadequate,reliableandimpartialinvestigationofthecomplaint.Each
investigationwillinclude,asnecessary,interviewingwitnesses,obtainingdocumentsandallowingpartiesto

CityArts&PrepPublicCharterSchoolforthePerformingArtsiscommittedtoprovidingallstudentswithasafeandcivil

Thedecisiontosuspendastudentshallbemadebyaschooladministrator(e.g.HeadofAcademics,DirectorofStudent
Culture)withouttherecommendationofthestudent’steacherorotherstaff.Theadministratorissuingthesuspension
willdeterminethenumberofdaysforsuspensionbasedontheseverityoftheinfractionandpreviousinfractions.The
suspensionshallbecomeeffectiveimmediatelyunlessotherwisestatedbytheadministratorissuingthesuspension.
Thedecisiontorecommendastudentforexpulsionshallbemadebyaschooladministrator(e.g.HeadofAcademics,
DirectorofStudentCulture)withouttherecommendationofthestudent’steacherorotherstaff.Inrecommending
expulsion,theadministratorwillconsidertheseverityoftheinfraction,theCodeofConduct,thestudent’sprevious
infractions,anystudentDisciplinecontracts,andthestudent’sage.Astudentrecommendedforanexpulsionwillhavea

student’sbehalf.Thestudenthastherightnottospeakonhis/herownbehalf.Neithertheschool’s
representativeatthehearingnorthestudentnorhis/herrepresentative(s)willbegiventheopportunityfor
cross-examinationduringthehearing.
5. Within24hoursoftheconclusionofthehearing,thepanelwillmakearecommendationregardingthe
consequence.Thepanel’srecommendationwillbeeffectiveimmediately.
6. Thestudent/familywillbeinformedofthedecisionviaphonewithin2schooldaysoftheconclusionofthe
hearingandwrittennotificationwillbemailedwithinthree(3)schooldaysofthedecision.Thisnoticewill
containinformationregardingappealprocedures.
7. Ifaparent/guardiandoesnotrequestahearing,orfailstoattendthehearingatthescheduleddate,time,and
place,therighttoahearingwillbewaived.Therefore,theschoolwillproceedwithitsdeterminationregarding

DisciplinePanelHearingAppeal
AnystudentwhoisexpelledhastherighttoappealthedecisioninwritingtotheChairpersonofCityArts&PrepBoard
ofTrusteeswithinfive(5)schooldaysofthewrittennoticeofexpulsionbeingissued.Thefollowingprocessshallbe
implementedforallappeals.
1. Anappealhearingdatewillbesetwithinseven(7)schooldaysofthereceiptoftheAppealrequest.
2. Theappealhearingdatewilloccurwithinthirty(30)calendardaysfromthedateofthehearingbeingset.
3. AppealhearingswillbeheardbythreemembersoftheBoardofTrustees,the“AppealPanel.”Afaculty/staff
memberorCityArts&PrepvolunteerwithfamiliaritywiththeschoolmayreplaceoneoftheBoardofTrustees
onthe“AppealPanel”basedonthediscretionoftheBoardChair.
4. Thestudentmayberepresentedbyhis/herparent/guardianandoneadditionaladvocate.
5. Thestudenthastherighttospeakonhis/herbehalfattheAppealHearing.Thestudentmaychoosenotto
speakattheAppealHearing.
6. ThestudentmaynotreturntoCityArts&Prepandparticipateinschoolactivitieswhileanappealispending.

7. Appealhearingsareclosedtothepublic.
8. Ifaparent/guardianfailstoappearattheAppealHearingtherighttoappealiswaived,andtheoriginal
disciplinarydecisionwillstand.
Inmakingitsdecision,thethree-memberAppealPanelwill:
1. ReviewallevidenceanddocumentationfromtheDPRandanysupportingdocumentation;
2. ReviewanystatementsheardattheDPRonbehalfoftheschoolorstudent;
3. ReviewtheCityArts&PrepCodeofCharacter;
4. Reviewthestudent’spriorconductand/oracademicperformance;
5. Thepanelmayaskquestionsregardingthemattertoanyonepresentatthehearing.Oneadvocatemayspeak
onthestudent’sbehalf.Thestudenthastherightnottospeakonhis/herownbehalf.Neithertheschool’s
representativeatthehearingnorthestudentnorhis/herrepresentative(s)willbegiventheopportunityfor
cross-examinationduringthehearing.
Iftheexpulsionisoverturned,thecumulativerecordofthestudentandanyotherschool-maintainedrecordswillreflect
thatconclusion.IftheAppealPanelupholdstheexpulsion,theexpulsionshallbeimposed,andsuchdecisionwillbe
final.DecisionsmadebytheAppealPanelwillbefinal.
ClassroomVisits
Familiesarewelcomedandencouragedtovisittheschool,especiallytovisittheirchild’sclass,asitisoneofthebest
waystounderstandyourchild’sschoolexperience.Parent’s/guardiansshoulddiscusswiththeirchild’steacherwaysin
whichtheycanassistwithclassactivities.Typicalvisitpurposesinclude:observingyourchildinclassforthirtyminutes,
learningmoreaboutthecurriculum,seeinghowroutineswork,understandingtheschool’sinstructionalapproach,
volunteeringtohelpwithaprojectorworkinasmallgroup,orpresentingorsharinginformationorreadingtotheclass.
Whenvisitingweaskparents/guardianstonotifytheteacherat1-2daysinadvancetodiscussthetimingofthevisitand
lettheteacherknowwhattheirfocuswillbe.Uponarrivalattheschool,parentsshouldsigninatthemainofficeand
putonavisitor’ssticker.Parents/guardiansshouldallowteacherstofocusoninstructionandtheyshouldnotinteract
withachildwhoisnottheirown.
Afterthevisit,parentsshouldcheckinbrieflywiththeteacherbeforeleaving.Theparentshouldlettheteacherknow
whethertheparentfelthe/sheaccomplishedthepurposeofthevisitandbrieflyshareanyinsightsorquestions.Ifa
parentmustleaveinmiddleofalesson,withoutbeingabletocheckinwiththeteacher,he/sheshouldleaveanotewith
theinformationaboveandlettheteacherknowhowtocontacttheparent.
