Organs Working Together
All of your bodies cells specialize to perform specific functions. Groups of like cells, called tissues can work together to form organs. Large, complex organisms like humans need organs to work together in systems to carry out specific duties in the body.

Learning Checkpoint
p. 71, #15
4
Plant Organ Systems
A plant has two organ systems; a shoot system and root system. The shoot system includes everything above the ground including the stem, leaves, buds, flowers and fruit. The root system includes the root system underground as well as any aerial roots (roots that extend above the ground).
5
Plant Organ Systems
Read p. 72 and give a written description, with an example, of the interdependence of the shoot and root system of a plant.
•
•
The shoot system depends on the root system to absorb the water required for photosynthesis.
The root system depends on the shoot system to provide the sugars these cells need to survive (transported down the stem in vascular tissue).

A18 Inquiry Activity (p. 74)
In this activity you will have the opportunity to explore the digestive systems of 2 organisms and compare them to the human system.
A. Earthworm Dissection
Before you begin, the earthworm must be deceased. Mix 30 mL of ethyl alcohol with 20 mL water in a 250mL beaker. Put your worm in the solution until it is dead. Complete the dissection of the earthworm as described in the procedure.
B. Perch Dissection
Get a perch from the bucket, use rubber gloves if you prefer. Complete the dissection according to the instructions in your text. Once you are complete, bring it forward to the teacher for assessment. Things I am looking for:
• incisions are made carefully according to instructions without damaging underlying structures
• pins are positioned appropriately for optimum viewing
• student is able to identify the various organs and structures along with their function
C. Frog Dissection
Complete the virtual dissection of the frog by following the steps.
D. Required Work
•
•
Complete a detailed diagram of the digestive system of the earthworm. Include a title, border and labels.
Analyzing and Interpreting Questions
1. Compare the digestive systems of the earthworm and frog. Can you account for any differences?
2. List structures that are found in the digestive system of the earthworm that are not found in humans. What is the function of these structures?
3. What form of dissection (real or virtual) was most beneficial for learning the digestive systems of these animals. What are the advantages and disadvantages of each?
