October 2012
Dear Reader,
We are looking forward to an exciting month of events and new
publications!
From 10 to 14 October, the AUC Press will be participating in the
Frankfurt Book Fair (Hall 8.0, stand M942). If you wish to inquire
about sales, contact Trevor Naylor, AUC Press Associate Director,
Sales & Marketing.
On October 18, on the
occasion of the 70th
anniversary of the pivotal WWII
desert battle (Oct. 23‒Nov. 4,
1942), we invite you to the
book launch of El Alamein and
the Struggle for North Africa:
International Perspectives from
the Twenty-first Century, edited
by Jill Edwards, and to the opening of an exhibition featuring some
of the remarkable vintage historic illustrations from the book.
The event will take place in the AUC Legacy Gallery of the AUC
Tahrir Square Campus following a special day-long symposium in
Oriental Hall on the North African conflict, chaired by Jill Edwards,
with the participation of many of the book‟s international
contributors. El Alamein and the Struggle for North Africa offers a
detailed yet broad reassessment of the complexities of the war in
North Africa between 1941 and 1943 through an insightful collection
of studies by distinguished military historians.
Other new books this month include:
Ancient Nubia: African Kingdoms on the Nile, a lushly illustrated
gazetteer of the archaeological sites of southern Egypt and northern
Sudan, with essays on the history, archaeology, and material culture
of the region, edited by Marjorie M. Fisher, Peter Lacovara, Salima
Ikram, and Sue D‟Auria, with photographs by Chester Higgins Jr,
and a foreword by Zahi Hawass.

El Alamein and the Struggle for
North Africa
International Perspectives from the
Twenty-first Century
Edited by Jill Edwards
“Many historians thought that the Battle
of El Alamein was a turning point of the
war. Churchill famously said „Before
Alamein we never had a victory. After
Alamein we never had a defeat.‟ That
is not quite true of course but it
certainly was very significant in a
sense that it gave people hope that they would eventually be able
to win after a very miserable start to the war. The other turning
point of course was Stalingrad. Those are twin events. El Alamein
was a very significant area for Britain, more so perhaps than
Stalingrad.” Excerpt from a recent interview with Jill Edwards. For

An Egyptian Novel
Translated by the author
“Hundreds of eyes intersect with his,
redoubling his fears, almost driving
him out of his mind. How is he to
distinguish between an inquisitive
youth and a scout for a criminal
gang? How can he tell if that person
in the café, observing him from
behind his newspaper, is a
plainclothes policeman or an agent for the CIA? One thing is for
sure: danger lurks in every corner. It aims weapons at him from
the rooftops. It is ready to pounce on him from behind tinted car
windows.” Excerpt from Chapter 1.

The Imaginary and the
Documentary
Cultural Studies in Literature,
History, and the Art
Issue 32 of Alif: Journal of
Comparative Poetics (published by
the AUC‟s Department of English and
Comparative Literature) contains
articles ranging from “Resistance
Literature Revisited: From Basra to
Guantánamo” and “Arabia Fantasia:
US Literary Culture and the Middle
East,” to “Cultural Identity and Diaspora,” and uses cultural
criticism to investigate the intersection of the imagination and
reality in creative work.
“Creative works are not just products of the imagination,
standing apart from what takes place in reality; nor are historical
accounts possible without the faculty of imaginative
construction,” explains Alif editor Ferial Ghazoul.
