Mrs. Chausse’s Chemistry Gifted Lesson Plan: Unit 11 Chemical Reactions January 4 – 21, 2016 Monday, January 4, 2016 GLE/Standard: Naming and writing formulas Objective: SWBAT write the formula and chemical name for various ionic bonds (binary and ternary) at 85% accuracy. Materials: Elmo, syllabus, make up policy form, Do Now sheet, periodic table, table of contents, flow chart, worksheet Lesson plan: 15-minute homeroom before 1st period to get schedules Do now: Compare and contrast ionic and covalent bonds. When finished, students will copy the table of contents and the homework for the unit plan in their planners. Review policies: Students will receive another copy of the syllabus to review. They will also go over the science department make up work policy form Students will go over the Do Now and re-take notes from before the break on how to name ionic compounds in a flowchart Students will practice writing the name or formula for ionic compounds. Materials: Elmo, Alka-Seltzer tablet, water, ziplock bag, balance, Lesson plan: (pass by homeroom today for report cards) Do now: Students will write a skeleton equation for a sample problem Students will review the work from the previous day Students will review the procedures for the mini lab and all lab safety procedures (Students will get goggles and aprons) Students will conduct lab according to procedures on the lab manual in order to explain the Law of Conversation of Mass by calculating the masses of water and an Alka-Seltzer tablet before and after a chemical reaction Students will answer response questions and complete a lab report Homework: study for a quiz tomorrow on writing skeleton equations Friday, January 8, 2016 GLE/Standard: Objective: SWBAT take a quiz on writing skeleton equations at 85% accuracy. SWBAT balance skeleton chemical equations at 85% accuracy. Materials: Elmo, periodic table, worksheet Lesson plan: Do now: Students will calculate the mass of one product when given the masses of the reactants and the other product and explain how they used the Law of Conservation of Mass to determine it. Students will use the example from Do Now from Thursday to balance as a teacher model example Students will practice two more balancing skeleton chemical equation examples Students will take the quiz on writing skeleton equations. Materials: Elmo, periodic table, product prediction packet Lesson plan: Do now: Students will predict the products for a combustion reaction and balance the equation Students will take notes on how to predict the products for single replacement, double preplacement, and acid-base reactions Students will practice predicting the products for the examples in the packet for these types of reactions Homework: finish these problems Friday, January 15, 2016 GLE/Standard: Objective: SWBAT predict the products for the synthesis and decomposition reactions at 85% accuracy. Students will predict the products of various reactions in different stations of the labs after classifying the type of reaction based on the reactants Students will answer response questions Any students who do not complete the lab today will have to make it up tomorrow after school Homework: finish lab report if not finished in class Wednesday, January 20, 2016 GLE/Standard: Objective: SWBAT review for the test on Thursday by practicing a study guide with a partner at 85% accuracy. Materials: periodic table, test, pencil Lesson plan: Do now: Students will get into testing taking arrangements including getting a pencil out. Teacher will provide a clean periodic table. A calculator may be use for this test. Students will take the assessment. When students are finished, students may copy the table of contents posted for the next unit. Homework: none
