Brett Younger loved being the
pastor at Lake Shore from 19962001. (Like every former pastor, he
knows he left too soon.) Brett was
a pastor of four churches for
twenty-two years. He is the
Associate Professor of Preaching at
the McAfee School of Theology at
Mercer University in Atlanta where he teaches preaching, worship, and writing. He
has a new book someone needs to buy, Time for Supper: Invitations to Christ's
Table. Brett writes hip columns for Associated Baptist Press and sentimental ones
for Baptists Today. He is a graduate of Baylor and Southern Seminary.
Brett and Carol, also a graduate of Baylor and Southern, have two sons. Carol
recently became the editor of Reflections: A Daily Devotional Guide. She also works as
the Editor/Writer for the Center for Teaching Churches at McAfee. She enjoys
being David Davis’ sister.
Graham, who was seven when he came to Lake Shore, just graduated from the
University of Georgia Law School. Caleb, who was eight when he left Lake Shore,
will be a junior at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.
Carol and Brett will be leaving Atlanta at the end of June to serve for five
months as Interim Pastor and Educator at the Santiago Community Church in
Santiago, Chile, but being back in Waco will be the high point of their summer.

Bring a piece of fabric that represents you, even tells a story.
 Attach your written story to the fabric and put it in the
basket on the communion table.
 Watch for a quilt to emerge from all the colors and textures
and patterns of our fabrics and lives.
All kinds of fabric are good: velvet, denim, linen, silk, and more.
Sort through memories linked to ties and t-shirts, baby clothes
and bandanas, Christmas tablecloths and work clothes.
Our goal is a piece of fabric from each person at Lake Shore
— youngest, oldest, and everyone in between.

Jubilee Theater Presents
“City of Refuge”

Tickets $10/advance; $12/door
Tony nominated Elizabeth Davis performed in the
award winning Broadway play, ONCE. This talented
young actress was a Baylor student who volunteered
with Mission Waco and the homeless during her years at
Baylor. Before heading to NYC for graduate school,
Stevie Walker-Webb, who grew up in North Waco just a
few blocks from Jubilee Theatre, was the theatre’s first
director. On June 16 Webb and Davis will perform
portions of two separate plays they have written about
homelessness. Call 753-4900 for more information.
We have placed an additional order for Stitches, Lake Shore’s
summer reading book. If you would like to have a copy,

the books arrive. We want everyone who wants a book to have one.
As you read the book, when did you find yourself affirming what
Lamott said? When did your heart respond with a knowing “yes” to
her words? What questions does Lamott prompt in you? Your

Celebrations
Kassidy Knighten and Marco Valasquez will be married
Sunday, June 8 in Houston. Tom Hanks will officiate.
Susan York and Brandon Fisher were married on Saturday,
May 31. Mike and Rachel Sciretti officiated at the
wedding. Susan is the daughter of Debbie York and
Mark York and the granddaughter of Preston and
Genie Dyer.
Children’s Corner
Prayers for . . .
Weldaleen Satterwhite, friend of Louise Powell, Amanda
Alumbaugh, Sandy Londos, and others died May 24
after a brief illness. Weldaleen was a longtime Waco
ISD teacher, who taught for years at Viking Hills.
Her teaching blessed many in the community.
Lynn Williams asks for prayers for the Williams
family. Her cousin Julie Broadus is grieving the loss
of her eighteen-year old daughter, Finley Broadus,
who died of liver cancer on June 2. Finley’s
grandmother was Clif Williams’ youngest sister. Lynn
asks that we keep Finley’s parents, Coleman and
Callie; her siblings, Suzanne and Rob; and her
numerous first and second cousins in your prayers.

Terri Evans’ mother in Houston.
Continue to keep Donna Slette, Elizabeth King, Michael

What Maya Angelou learned . . .
After supper on Wednesday, May 28, the day of Maya
Angelou’s death, we read these words by her
“I’ve learned that no matter what happens, or how
bad it seems today, life goes on, and it will be
better tomorrow. I’ve learned that you can tell a
lot about a person by the way he/she handles
these three things: a rainy day, lost luggage, and
tangled Christmas tree lights. I’ve learned that
regardless of your relationship with your parents,
you’ll miss them when they’re gone from your
life. I’ve learned that making a “living” is not the
same thing as making a “life.” I’ve learned that
life sometimes gives you a second chance. I’ve
learned that you shouldn’t go through life with a
catcher’s mitt on both hands; you need to be able
to throw something back. I’ve learned that
whenever I decide on something with an open
heart, I usually make the right decision. I’ve
learned that even when I have pains, I don’t have
to be one. I’ve learned that every day you should
reach out and touch someone. People love a warm

This Sunday is Pentecost, when we celebrate the
coming of the Holy Spirit and the birthday of the
Church. On Pentecost evening, Kassidy Knighten, one
of our preschool caregivers, and Marco Valasquez will
be celebrating vows of marriage in Houston. How
appropriate it seems that Kassidy, full of life and spunk
and music and nurture, begins this new season of her
life as we mark the coming of the Spirit. Last month,
Barb Francis and Rachel Farris hosted an Alice in
Wonderland church shower to honor Kassidy. The
Lake Shore children presented Kassidy and Marco with
a vacuum in love and gratitude for the many spills she
helps pick up and the love and care she has given our
youngest. Please join us in remembering and praying
for Kassidy and Marco.
summer sabbath
We invite you to send a digital photograph of a place or
experience that “says Sabbath” to you. Last year’s Sabbath
collection ranged from images of backyard sunsets to
Canterbury Cathedral. Can’t catch a picture of the lightning
bugs on your lawn? What about a napping toddler or family
member absorbed in a book or a meal on the deck? We will
feature a photo in the newsletter each week and display all of
them in a photography exhibit at the end of the summer.
