Internet addiction among Employees:
On a Rise
Ms Sneha Mankar.
Introduction
American Psychological Association had
predicted that the internet is potentially
leading to addiction among computer users
which indeed to develop policy guidelines for
counseling the persons who may become
internet dependent. Compared to other forms
of addiction such as gambling and alcohol
public awareness about internet addiction is
still in its stage of infancy. However a
number of specialists have studied the
internet addiction problem and have a number
of definitions and reasons for the internet
dependent behavior.
According to Goldberg‘s described Internet
addiction is a behavioral addiction that serves
as a coping mechanism and borrows from
substance dependence criteria for the DSMIV. He labeled this disorder as Internet
Addiction Disorder. Among all behavioral
addictive traits the Internet stands out for its
relevance to the future and its promise of
potentially delivering harmful results to
millions as access to the Internet rises
globally. The capacity of the Internet for
socialization is a primary reason for the
excessive amount of time people spend
having real-time interactions using e-mail,
discussion forums

Problem Statement
―A study to assess the causes of internet
addiction among internet dependent
employees at selected workplaces.‖
Objectives
1- To assess the causes of internet addiction
among internet dependent employees at
selected workplaces.
2- To find out the association between
causes of internet addiction among internet
dependent employees at selected workplaces
for demographic variables.
Accepted In November 2014
Materials and methods
The study was conducted in the selected
workplaces of pune.
Review of literature: gave the researcher indepth complete concrete and profound broad
base knowledge of the research topic in detail
to identify the problem exists related to topic
and to identify the need of study.
The conceptual framework of this study is
based on Hildegard Peplau‘s interpersonal
theory. (1952-1988).
Research approach adopted for this study was
Mixed Research approach (i.e. In Qualitative
study – Phenomenological Realistic Design &
In Quantitative study – Non Experimental –
Exploratory Descriptive Design).

The sample was 30 samples who meet the
designated set of criteria during the period of
data collection.
The sampling technique used in the study was
non-probability
convenient
sampling
technique.
Tool: The researchers used Semi-structured
Questionnaire consists of Body Mass Index
Assessment scale, Demographic data of
adolescent school children, Semi-Structured
questionnaire on– I: Dietary pattern
assessment,
II:
Physical
activities
assessment, III: Psychosocial aspects.
The validity of the tool was obtained by
giving it to the experts from Nursing fields,
Psychologist, Statistician and experts from
Department of Psychiatry.
Reliability was assessed using Karl Pearson
Correlation
coefficient
method.
The
Pearson‘s correlation coefficient was found to
be 0.75 for the Reliability of the tool. The
tool was found reliable with score of 0.93
with a method of test retest.
Pilot study was conducted in selected work
places of administrative offices from 3rd
October to 5th October 2013 and 6 samples
were selected by non-probability convenient
sampling technique, based on the inclusion &
exclusion criteria to assess the feasibility of
the study and to decide the statistical analysis
and practicability of research.

Conclusion
Many individuals fulfill internet addiction
criteria within the first six months of using
the Internet because of these they initially
report feeling to intimate by the computer but
gradually feel a sense of ‗competency and
exhilaration from mastering the technology
and learning to navigate the applications
quickly by visual stimulation‘. Analysis of
data shows that some of the demographic
variables are having significant association
between the causes of internet addiction
among internet dependent employees. This
study could help in knowing the causes about
the internet addiction in the working
employees & how they can come out of this
problem by giving them information on its
prevention.
