Skeletal System

 Intro to
Sports
med
Overview of class:

Sports med uses a hands on method to learn about the human body and its functions. Sports med 1 helps students understand not only the anatomy, but movements of the human body as well. This course provides an understanding of how the body works, and how to treat an injured or ill athletes. What we learned:

I
n Sports med 1 we cover a variety of bodily functions. From the digestive system, to the integumentary, as well as everything in between. Students will learn the majority of the bodies functions, as well as medical terms pertaining to the body function. This class really helps students grasp a better understanding of the human body and what we can do to keep it in the best shape possible. Medical Terms: itis: inflammation of Verruc/o: warts Pilus: Hair The wrist is distal to the elbow The shoulders are superior to the hips The knees are inferior to the head Careers: Physical therapists
:
help patients reduce pain and improve or restore mobility, in many cases without expensive surgery. Education required is undergraduate degree in a related field, and a master’s or doctoral (roughly 3 years) in physical therapy. Roughly annual salary: $79,860 Athletic Traine
r
: A certified health care professional who practices in the field of sports medicine. Annual Salary: 42, 690 Bachelor's degree is required Skeletal
System
Appendicular
: arms,
legs, and waist
Axial
: head, chest,
and, neck
:
The skeletal system is about the axial and appendicular skeleton. It is also about articulations, or joints, mostly focused on the diarthrosis (movable) joints. Finally, it is about functions of bones as well as shapes and bone tissue. Med Terms: ❏ Plaque: mass adhering to surface of tooth, composed of bacteria, saliva, and organic waste ❏ Fascia: Fibrous connective tissue that joins organs Body Org Sentences: ❏ The ilium is inferior to the clavicle ❏ The scapula is posterior to the sternum ❏ The radius is distal to the humerus THINGS LEARNED: ● I learned and was able to identify the bones in the body. ● I learned what bones are the strongest and what are the weakest ● I learned that there are tiny holes throughout your bones Careers involving the Skeletal System
Osteologist
:Requires you to identify age of bones and pay close attention to little details, can lead to other jobs such as Archaeologist and Forensic Osteologists. Archaeologists
can make up to 68,000 dollars a year if employed by the federal government and 40,000 if in a private sector and requires Bachelor's Degrees in Anthropology. For the job you will be identifying ancient historical remains found in dig site
s. Forensic Osteologist
can make anywhere from 39,000102,000 dollars a year depending on what departments of states you're working for and requires a Graduate Level degree in Anthropology. For the most part of the job you will be identifying remains found in crime scenes or suspected crime scenes Muscle
System!
Overview:
In the muscular system unit we went over the names of the different muscles in the body, their locations, and their functions. Muscle Vocab/Abbs:
Brachi/o: Arm, Bi: twice/two, Algia: Pain/Painful Dystrophy: Muscle disorder resulting from defective or faulty nutrition Body Org Sentences:
The biceps brachii is anterior to the triceps brachii The rectus femoris is anterior to the biceps femoris The anterior tibialis is inferior to the middle deltoid What We Learned:
The locations and functions of all muscles in the body, such as the adductors, quadriceps, and the pectoralis major/minor. We learned about diseases that affect the muscles such as muscular dystrophy and fibromyositis. Muscular Careers:

Can include a Physical Therapist and Massage Therapist.
Physical Therapis
t Help people who have injuries or illness improve movement and manage pain. Professional (entrylevel) physical therapist education programs in the United States only offer the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree to all new students, who enroll. The average salary is $81,000 a year.
Massage Therapist
Treat clients by working directly to aid in relaxation and optimal functioning. High school diploma is required but secondary education is useful which include studies in anatomy and physiology. The average salary is around $36,000 yearly. DIGESTIVE
SYSTEM
Overview
: The digestive system consisted of the names and functions of different internal organs located within the human body. This unit walked through how each organ plays a role in digestion. Through each individual organ, we learned how food is broken down and literally digested. Digestion is defined as:
the process of breaking down food by mechanical and enzymatic action in the alimentary canal into substances that can be used by the body. What Did We Learn?
We learned all of the different organs involved in the digestive system. Then we learned how it works from beginning to end, and where it all goes. Lastly we learned some of the different health concerns involved with the digestive system. Med Terms
: This year we learned the different med terms involved in the location and functions of parts of the body. Some examples are: Posterior, which means behind: The pancreas is posterior to the stomach Distal, which means further from point of attachment: the rectum is distal to the descending colon Medial, which means towards the midline: the small intestine is medial to the large intestine Career 1. Dentist
Specializes in diagnosing and treating diseases and disorders of teeth and tissues of the oral cavity. You can make 143,310 dollars. You will need about 4 years of college. 2. Gastroenterology
This covers the full spectrum of diseases of the digestive tract and its disorders. You can make 309,121 dollars. You will need about 8 years of school and 4 to 7 years of internship. Nervous
system
The nervous system controls all of the systems of the body and their specific functions. It also carries messages from the brain to the rest of the body through neurons. Over 100 billion nerve cells make up this complex system! Med terms: ● The dendrites of a nervous cell are thin branching extensions of a cell body. ● A nerve can send 100,000 impulses per second. ● A funny bone is an ulnar nerve found the the hollow space of the elbow. ● The frontal lobe is anterior to the occipital lobe. ● The spinal cord is inferior to the brain. What we learned: ● There are 12 cranial nerves (olfactory, optic, occulomotor, trochlear, trigeminal, abducens, facial, acoustic, glossopharyngeal, vagus, spinal accessory, & hypoglossal) ● There are two subsystems within the nervous system (somatic and autonomic) ● There are three layers in the skull: dura mater, arachnoid mater, and pia mater Careers: ● Neurologist
: an M.D. who diagnoses and treats disorders of the nervous system. Avg. salary: $234,888. Education required: Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree and clinical residency. ● Neuroradiologist
: uses imaging methods (Xray, MRI, CT, angiography…) to diagnose and suggest treatment for disorders of the nervous system. Avg. salary: $226,630. Education required: An M.D. in Neuroradiology and a stateissued license. Cardiovascula
r
System
Fun Facts:
Y
our heart will beat 3 trillion times in your life (on
average)!. Every day your heart beats 100,000 times!
Your heart is roughly the size of your fist. This
muscle circulates 5-7 liters of blood throughout
the body.
Atherosclerosis
: abnormal narrowing of the blood vessels
caused by deposits of plaque
Arteriostenosis
: abnormal narrowing of an artery
The cardiovascular
system consists of
the heart and blood
vessels. Its main
function in the body
is to circulate
nutrients bring cells
oxygen, and
transport waste to
the kidneys. In this
unit we also learned
about health
concerns such as
heart disease and
hypertension. Terms:
The atriums are superior to the ventricles
The aorta is superior to the pulmonary veins
The inferior vena cava is inferior to the superior
vena cava… shocker..
Careers
:

It takes about 15 years in total to become a
cardiac surgeon. They make about
$522,875
per year. Cardiac surgery
involves surgery to the heart and large blood vessels.
Cardiovascular technologists:

Are assistants to physicians who aid
