Course Description:
Spanish 1AB is an introductory course to Spanish language and culture. It is designed to encourage the
development of all four language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) within a communicative
approach. The final goal of the course is to provide the foundations for oral comprehension and
proficiency in using Spanish at the introductory level. Spanish 1AB covers the first five chapters of the
textbook ¡Arriba! and the first eighteen episodes of Destinos.
IMPORTANT NOTE: This class is for beginners, students with no or little knowledge of Spanish. If
you have been misplaced in this class because of your more advanced level, you should try Spanish 2AB,
3 or 4 or take the CLEP to challenge the class. If you still decide to stay, remember that all the activities
and pedagogy of this class are designed for beginners and there will be no exceptions in fulfilling all the
requirements described in this syllabus.
Student Learning Outcomes: Upon the successful completion of Spanish 1AB, the student is
expected to be able to:

Recognize and distinguish the conjugation patterns of both regular and irregular verbs in the present and present
progressive tense, and demonstrate ability to manipulate them.
Understand written and spoken numbers and express and write them in contexts including the expression of
dates, prices, basic counting, and mathematical operations.
Identify and understand basic vocabulary that will allow for basic communication in Spanish (introducing
oneself, describing one’s family, and exchanging pleasantries).
Identify mayor cultural and socio-historical aspects of the Hispanic world (countries, capitals and geographical
location, costumes, food, art and music).
Read with understanding shorts texts and cultural overviews of the Hispanic world
Exams and Quizzes:
Exams: there will be five exams in addition to the final exam which consists of an oral interview. Exams
dates are indicated in the syllabus. However, remember that it is your responsibility to be informed of any
changes to our schedule/syllabus. Quizzes: there will be a number of short, pop-up or announced quizzes
which will be collected and graded.
Make-up/Dropped Exam and Quizzes:
There are no make-up exams or quizzes. If you are absent the day of an exam or quiz you will receive a
zero (0). However, you will be allowed to miss one exam and one quiz or drop the lowest in each
category if you never miss one. Make-up exams will be permitted only under the most dire of
circumstances and only with prior arrangement with the instructor (Remember, you can always miss/drop
one exam and a quiz).
My Languagelab Assignments:
Mylanguagelab is the electronic version of Arriba Student Activities Manual (SAM). You will find all
Arriba-related assignments on-line with various due dates (See online address below (1) . It is essential
that you complete all on-line activities before or by their due dates. You will receive zero credit for online activities submitted past the due dates. No exceptions please!
Carpeta or Folder:
The many written assignments and compositions done throughout the class will be placed in a folder. The
folder will be collected twice during the semester as indicated. The folder will include:
a. Taller (A-TB). From this section at the end of each chapter, you need to do “Antes de escribir” and
“A escribir.” Some of these compositions will be initiated in class with further editing or completion
as homework.
b. Taller (A-SAM). This is the last section/page in your A-SAM. Please do and turn-in this page.
c. Destinos: “Más allá del espisodio section” or reading selection at the end of each episode. Please
answer reading questions and turn-in this page.
d. Any additional handout given in class.
Destinos will be shown in class. If absent or for further reviews, go to BC Library or find the online links
as shown below (2)
Oral Communication and Participation Card.
In order to keep a record and evaluate your actual participation in class, the instructor will have a card for
each student. At random, students will be called on to respond to questions and graded. If you are absent
at the time being called, you will receive a zero for that occasion.
Attendance.
Daily attendance and active participation are both essential and required for successful completion of this
class. Students that miss any day of the first two weeks without clearing the absence with the instructor
will be dropped so that students from the waitlist can move on into the class. Students may also be
dropped when missing two or more classes without notifying the instructor. If you wish to drop the class
it is your responsibility to fill out the proper form or go online to drop.
Class Conduct.
Please: DO be respectful to the instructor and other students.
DO participate actively in all group activities and class discussions.
DO arrive on time, and request permission if you need to leave class early.
DO turn of and put away all electronic devices or cell phones during class.
DO your own work. Cheating, copying or plagiarism will not be tolerated.
DON’T eat food during class.
DON’T engage in non-relevant talking during class.
DON’T disturb the class by arriving late, leaving early, or by any other disturbing activity.
Repeated offenses despite of instructor’s warning will result in student being dropped from the class.
Remember that beyond the specifics of the subject matter, we are first and foremost an adult community
of learners for whom respect for others, courtesy and good manners should be the norm at all times.

Additional Help: Using flashcards and study groups are helpful as well as exchanging phones with one
or more classmates so that, in the event of absence, you can get the information about any missed material
or homework. You can also request help from the Tutoring Center (Student Services 395-4430) as well as
from your instructor during office hours.
Students with Special Needs who believe they may need accommodations in this class are encouraged to
