Some of us are impressed with the power of an engine for its speed or strength. We are taken with the power of fitness. The power of nature in a storm can stop us in our tracks. The endless waves and intensity of the sea can mesmerize us. For some, power equates to dominance and violence. “Absolute power corrupts absolutely” succinctly defines the potential for abuse of this thing called power. Many of our childhood memories are linked very deeply with power both to those who have it and those who don’t. This allure we seem to have with power can take us into some very frightening places. How are we meant to interact with this intensity of experience? In the spiritual realm, power – that which affects everything around us – can be misinterpreted. From my perspective, power is not a tool to impart cruelty or neglect. It is a gift to be honored. Divine power, the magnificence which is and affects all things, can easily be described as grace. It is the energy and the knowing which can create or destroy. What we bring to the Divine is magnified as described in the book and movie, “The Secret”. If we worry and become afraid then our lives reflect the ongoing energy of ominous future possibilities. If we become angry or frustrated over events which are typical of life on planet earth, then we magnify the energy of entitlement. If however we shift and work on taking life as it comes, whatever form of energy it is, then we can choose to neutralize and re-energize. “Coming to neutral” has been discussed quite a bit. The value of it, I feel, is to step out of the past reaction and not into a future one. It is when we “come to neutral” that we can choose our sentiment and implement our spiritual power. Power is often misperceived as originating from somewhere other than the Divine. What we do with our power depends on many things, and like many spiritual concepts choice is key. If we seek something to change in our lives, then we need to work with the energy around it, not the feeling that we are somehow owed it. Feeling that we somehow deserve something is very different than knowing we, as expressions of the Divine, are encouraged to have whatever would best serve us. This is a process of our soul’s journey not merely what happens in this lifetime. So the next time you realize chaos is around you, perhaps consider stopping and identify the actual and perceived power around you. Are you allowing your emotions to color your experience? Or, are you recognizing that the Divine is truly your only source of REAL power?
