A
Before you begin reading,
practice the technique of
skimming. Underline the
title. Circle any heads or
subheads you find. Draw an
arrow next to any graphics.
Then go back and read just
the first sentence of each
paragraph. What do you
think this document will
teach you how to do?

IN OTHER WORDS
These directions tell you how to take
an image, or picture, from a piece of paper and put it onto
your computer so you can put it on a Web site. Place your
picture in a machine called a scanner, which you will use to
copy your picture onto the computer.
The word scan has several
possible definitions. Scan can
mean: (1) read quickly; (2)
mark the rhythm of a line of
poetry; or (3) copy words or
pictures from paper onto a
computer. Based on context
clues, or hints in the text,
I think scan means “copy
words or pictures from paper
onto a computer.”

Vocabulary
I have heard the word edit
used in my English class
before. When I edit my essay,
I change things in it. I think
that in this sentence, edit is a
verb meaning “change.”

I am not sure what a
dialogue box is, but I think I
can figure it out. A dialogue
is a conversation. Maybe
this term means “a screen
that allows you to tell the
computer something or
choose an option.”

I know that scanning will
help me find specific
information quickly. I see a
sentence in boldface, which
means it is probably very
important. I guess the image
has to be in the scanner for
everything to work!

What should you do when
you are happy with how your
image looks?
IN OTHER WORDS
Now that your picture is on the
computer, you can make a lot of changes to it. You can change
the size of the picture to be as big or as small as you want it
on your Web site. When you are done working with your
picture, give it a short name. Save it on the computer as a
JPEG, a kind of picture that does not take up a lot of space.
Medium-quality pictures look good and show up quickly on
a Web site.
