For the past 27 years, the Thornton Police Department has
been providing the joy of Christmas to Thornton children
through the Christmas Crusade for Children. “During the
course of their duties Thornton Police Officers become
aware of family situations where children will be having a
less than desirable Christmas experience due to a variety
of family hardships and situations,” says Thornton Police
Officer Matt Barnes.
“The officers personally nominate these children for
supplemental Christmas presents through the Christmas
Crusade for Children Program, and then during the course
of their duties deliver the gifts to the children at their home.”
Since the program’s inception, Thornton PD has helped
over 4,675 Thornton families representing 12,908 children.
Gifts for the program are accepted through donations from
the community. The program only accepts new, unused
toys and clothing.
Donations can be dropped off at the Thornton Police
Department, 9551 Civic Center Dr., 8-10 a.m., any day of
the week leading up to Christmas. For more information contact Officer Barnes at 720-977-5024.

North Metro Rail Line Construction Update
As winter moves in, construction of the North Metro Rail Line continues at a rapid
pace. Most bridge substructures have attained substantial completion, making way
for the onslaught of track installation. “Drainage projects and parking lot construction in and near the stations will continue
for several months, followed by the final aesthetic work of canopy placement,
landscaping and parking lot finishes next summer,” says RPP Public Information
Manager Kathy Berumen. The Overhead Catenary System (OCS) poles are methodically
rising to define the guideway as opening inches upon us. “It was a productive summer
for the North Metro Rail Line” says Regional Rail Partner’s Project Manager, Dave Trent. “We’re happy with the progress we’ve made thus far and ask our local community
members to bear with us as we continue with our operations.” Construction activities encompass many variables including subcontractor schedules,
availability of materials, coordination with local jurisdictions and weather delays. For
the most up-to-date information, visit www.rtd-fastracks.com/nm_3. While there,
please sign up to receive the North Metro newsletter and construction alerts. If you

Thornton’s North I-25 Corridor a Focal Point
for Commercial Real Estate
Thornton has become a focal point for the commercial real estate market,
capitalizing on a rapidly growing high-income population, lower land costs
and reasonable housing prices. “These factors are gaining the corridor a lot
of attention from developers,” says Thornton Retail Administrator Julie Jacoby.
“The corridor is now seeing exciting retail and entertainment opportunities
historically reserved for our southern neighbors.”

Topgolf, which opened its first Colorado location in Centennial last year, has
turned its attention to Thornton. Topgolf received formal approval from the
Thornton City Council, and they will construct a 64,000 sq. ft. golf recreation
facility on 14.4 acres at the southeast corner of I-25 and 136th Avenue in
Thornton. It is currently projected to open in Fall 2017.
Topgolf will compliment additional development already occurring in
Thornton along this intersection, including the Denver Premium Outlets. Simon Property Group is expected to break ground in the Spring of 2017 on
this 350,000 sq. ft. outlet mall being developed on the northeast corner of I-25
and 136th Avenue. Denver Premium Outlets is expected to open to the public
in time for Back-to-School shopping in 2018.
Also on deck, Viewhouse is slated to join the mix with a replica of their
Centennial restaurant/tavern locating next door to Topgolf and the Thorncreek
Golf Course. The 15,000 sq. ft. facility will be complete with a restaurant, bar,
rooftop dining, and the ever popular Viewhouse Green.
Shop Thornton First Magazine
As the holiday season approaches, be sure to take a look at our first
edition of Shop Thornton First magazine that will be mailed to homes
in Thornton toward the end of October. This publication will contain
a tremendous collection of information, articles and advertisements
for many of Thornton’s 1,800+ businesses. Please keep and use this
listing when searching for entertainment, food or a multitude of
services located in Thornton.
This inaugural publication is brought to you in part by the Businesses
of Thornton Advisory Commission–a group of local business
representatives who serve as a liaison between Thornton City Council
and the Thornton business community. Their goal is to better inform
residents about the services, businesses and amenities the city of
Thornton has to offer and why shopping in Thornton not only benefits
you and your family, but also the entire city. Cabela’s Thornton, which remains one of the highest grossing stores per sq. ft.
in the country, will have a new co-tenant at The Grove Shopping Center at I-25
and 144th Avenue. SteinMart recently opened next door to Hobby Lobby on
October 13, just in time to capitalize on the holiday shopping season.
The Summit, a 50,000 sq. ft. bowling and entertainment facility planned for
144th Avenue and Washington Street, will be breaking ground in September
with a planned opening for Fall of 2017. At opening, the center will boast
24 bowling lanes, a stadium-seating restaurant/bar and private bar, bowling
area, event/party rooms and outdoor dining.
“The North I-25 corridor has truly become the focal point for development,”
says Jacoby. “A number of other projects are in the planning stages from the
Larkridge retail center at Thornton’s northern boundary of CO Hwy 7, to the
Washington Square business park located at 120th Avenue, to Thornton’s
Healthcare District located in the southern part of the city.” For the most up-to-date information available, please visit the Shop

the Thanksgiving Holiday. Thornton offices will reopen for normal business
hours on Monday, November 28. The Margaret W. Carpenter Recreation
Center and Thornton Community Center will be closed Thursday, November

November 25. The Thornton Senior Center will be closed both Thursday and
Friday.
Thanksgiving week, Thursday and Friday trash/recycle customers will have
a one day delay in service. Thursday customers will have their trash/recycle

collected on Saturday, November 26. All other trash/recycle customers are
on a normal schedule with no delay in service. Wes Brown Water Treatment Plant
Winter Maintenance Shut Down
A seasonal shift of treated water sources will begin mid-November,
when the Wes Brown Treatment Plant will be shut down for winter
maintenance activities. The plant treats water from the South Platte and
Clear Creek, and will be offline through February, restarting sometime
in March. The Thornton Water Treatment Plant, which treats water
from the Standley Lake, will remain in operation during this period
and supply all of Thornton’s water needs. Some residents may notice
a slight difference in taste between water sources, but the water will
meet all state and federal drinking water regulations. Daylight Saving Time:
Change Your Clock – Change Your Batteries
On Sunday, November 6, be sure to change your clocks for Daylight Saving Time, and change the batteries in smoke
alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. “Having a working smoke alarm cuts the chances of dying in a reported fire
in half,” says Thornton Fire Public Education Officer Sabrina Iacovetta. “When smoke alarms fail to operate, it is usually
because batteries are missing, disconnected, or dead.”
When you’re changing the batteries, check the date of your smoke alarms. They need to be replaced every 10 years.
To check the manufacture date, remove the smoke alarm from the wall or ceiling, look at the back of the alarm for
the date of manufacture, put the alarm back on the ceiling or wall if it is less than 10 years old.
To prepare for a fire, Thornton Fire also recommends you create at least two different escape routes from every room and practice them with the entire
family. Plan and practice E.D.I.T.H. – Exit Drills in the Home. “Make the drills realistic and gather your family at a designated meeting place outside the
home,” says Iacovetta. “Safeguard your family from tragedy and take advantage of the time change to change the batteries in your smoke alarms and
carbon monoxide detectors.” November-December 2016
