Case Study
Mr. Smith teaches a grade 3 class in which he has students with a variety of learning needs. One student,
Ashton, has received a laptop computer and Clicker 6 as assistive technology. Ashton has a moderate to
profound intellectual disability and is functioning at a pre-literacy level and relies on picture and auditory/oral
support to complete written tasks. Verbally he uses one word utterances and requires a great deal of support
forming simple sentences. The class daily works on journal writing and Mr. Smith would like to find a way to
meaningfully include Ashton in this class activity. The vision is that a forced order grid will provide him with
practice following a set sentence structure (i.e. “noun verb noun”), using nouns and objects that Ashton is
familiar with and that he likes.

Tip…
Sometimes there is an instant picture for a word in only one verb tense, for example: there is a picture for
‘like’ but not for ‘likes.’ In this case, type the word, such as ‘like’ and use the Tab key for instant pictures.
Next, shift-click in the cell and type in your new word, such as ‘likes.’
