Sample Introduction
Throughout the novel Tangerine, by Edward Bloor, the characters are faced with tough choices. In this book, Paul interacts with many different people as he begins a new school year, first at Lake Windsor Middle School, then at Tangerine Middle School, and then eventually at St. Anthony's Catholic School. His experiences on the soccer team, with his parents who ignore him, and with his brother who Paul knows somehow caused his legal blindness, all mold him into the person he becomes by the end of the novel. Just as in reality our choices can affect each other, the characters in the book are closely intertwined and impact each other with the decisions they make. While many characters affect him, the choices of Paul's father most negatively impact Paul, because they cause him to question himself, hurt his relationship with Erik, and inhibit his ability to fit in with other people.
Notice the parts of the introduction
title and author
brief statement that one person's choices impact another person
BRIEF summary of novel
thesis statement with opinion and list of longterm impacts on Paul
Example "choice paragraph"
First, Luis chooses to go up to Erik and Arthur and stand up for his brother. He makes this choice because Erik hit Tino, and he does not think that was right. Luis “held his long arms out and extended his palms. ‘You would smack me?” (211). Paul admires Luis’s bravery when he does this, and he wishes that he had the courage to tell the truth and figure out what happened to him. As he faces Erik and Arthur in the final confrontaon, he remembers how Luis stood up to Erik. Paul “stepped forward and faced them, just as he had seen Luis do. He held his hands out, as he had done, and said “I’m not afraid of you, Erik” (261). Luis is a role model for Paul, and he has shown him how to stand up for himself and for what is right.
