TYBALT: What, art thou drawn among these heartless hinds?
Turn thee, Benvolio, look upon thy death.
BENVOLIO: I do but keep the peace: put up thy sword,
Or manage it to part these men with me.
TYBALT: What, drawn, and talk of peace! I hate the word,
As I hate hell, all Montagues, and thee:
Have at thee, coward!
They fight

Tybalt
It is clear from the audience’s very first glimpse of Tybalt that Juliet’s
cousin is a difficult and dangerous man. He calls the Montagues,
‘heartless hinds’ immediately insulting them, demonstrating the
‘ancient grudge’ is important to him. He commands Benvolio to ‘Turn’
and ‘Look upon [his] death’ even though Romeo’s cousin is trying to
keep the peace and stop the fight. This aggression is similar to the
determination he expresses to Lord Capulet at the ball when he spots
Romeo, ‘I'll not endure him’ he vows but his uncle refuses to have his
party spoilt and rebukes him, calling him a ‘saucy boy’ which would
have been humiliating. Tybalt is not a man who gives up easily and his
bitterness is evident when he says, ’but this intrusion shall/Now
seeming sweet convert to bitter gall.’ The word ‘gall’ means poison and
therefore highlights how dangerous Tybalt is…
