Upbeat North East is a carer’s support group supported and facilitated by the
Richardson Eating Disorder Service. The group meets on the first Tuesday of each
month at the Richardson Unit, Royal Victoria Infirmary.

This is a very useful book for sufferers from anorexia nervosa, and is generally very
popular amongst patients.

This book is based on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.

This step-by-step self help book is based on a compassionate new model of
psychotherapy called acceptance and commitment therapy.
• Anorexics on Anorexia
R. Shelley
Recovering sufferers of Anorexia Nervosa describe in their own words their personal
experiences.
• The Invisible Man
J. Morgan
A practical, problem-focused self-help manual for men with eating disorders and body
image problems.

This book uses Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) techniques to treat disorders by

• Getting Better Bit(e) by Bite(e): a survival kit for sufferers of bulimia nervosa and

This self help book empowers sufferers to take control of their lives by providing them
with the information and advice needed to tackle their eating difficulties.

• Feeling Good Handbook
D. Burns
Includes chapters: How to conquer depression and build self esteem. How to conquer
anxieties, fears and phobias, and how to strengthen relationships through better
communication.
• Overcoming Low Self Esteem
M. Fennel
This book explains the nature of low self-esteem and self destructive thinking. It
contains a complete self-help programme and monitoring sheets. It is based on
clinically proven techniques of cognitive therapy.
• Reinventing Your Life: How to Break Free from Negative Life Patterns and Feel
Good Again
Young and Klosko
This book is very helpful for people with long-standing eating disorders and includes
the following chapters: I’m worthless; The defectiveness life trap; I feel like such a
failure; It’s never quite good enough.
Families, Carers and Friends
• Anorexia Nervosa: A guide for sufferers and their families
R. Palmer
Discusses the causes, symptoms and treatment of this illness. Written for the anorexic,
their family and professional helpers.
• Anorexia Nervosa: a survival guide for families, friends and sufferers
J. Treasure
What has caused this to happen? What will happen now? What can we do about it?
This book is an attempt to answer some of these questions.
• Skill-based learning for caring for a loved one with an eating disorder
