2017 SBAC Testing Schedule and Fact Sheet
Dear CHS Families and Students,
CHS is preparing to administer the Smarter Balance Assessment of the Common Core Standards to
current juniors. Annually, CHS is required to administer a statewide assessment to the junior class that
evaluates each student’s knowledge in the areas of: English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science.
CHS English and Mathematics teachers have been practicing the assessment with their classes as the test
is no longer a paper assessment and it is completely electronic. It was important for us to allow juniors to
have some time learning how to navigate the technology tools within the assessment, specifically the split
screen, electronic graphing tools and more. The test is comprised of two sections. Section one is a
computer adapted set of multiple choice questions. Section two is a performance task. The English
Language Arts assessment will take three class periods to complete and the math section will take two
class periods.
Both the SBAC and Science NECAP are important tools available to parents and educators to determine
how well our school is helping students meet standards. In every assessment, scores are only as
meaningful as the effort the student puts into the tests. Encourage your student to take the tests seriously
and to give his or her best effort. You can best help your student prepare for the assessment by making
sure that he or she is rested on the days the tests will be given.
Colchester High School will administer the SBAC to current juniors beginning on Wednesday March 15
and testing should conclude on Wednesday, April 5. CHS students will take the English Language Arts
section in their CHS English course and this testing will take three class periods. CHS students will take
the math section over two class periods.
CHS students who attend Burlington Technical Center (BTC) will test at Colchester High School.
CHS students who attend the Center for Technology at Essex (CTE) will test at CTE.
CHS students who attend the Colchester Alternative Program (CAP) will test at CAP.
Ear Buds: Since the assessment is on the computer each student will need ear buds. We encourage
students to bring their own, however CHS will have them available for students who need them.
Students will need to have their laptop in school and fully charged on the days of the assessment as the
test is computer-based. All CHS-issued devices have the secure testing browser already downloaded and
ready to go. Student who bring their own device to school (BYOD) will have to download the secure
browser from the following site: http://ca.browsers.airast.org/ before the testing window begins. All
students should bring their chargers to school on the testing days.
Thank you for supporting your student and our school during the testing period. If you have any
questions, please do not hesitate to contact the school.
Sincerely,
Heather Baron
Principal
Don’t forget to regularly check the PLP Board for job, volunteer, and leadership opportunities.
