When do you think we will have a planting season, a summer growing season and a harvest season that most of us would classify as ‘normal’? What started off as a phenomenal planting season in May and June, gave way to the most blistering hot summer one could imagine, with very little rain to relieve the heat and dryness. We kept hearing during July that we would have scattered thunderstorms, but they must have scattered into Kentucky and Canada, because we sure didn’t see many of them! It’s a good thing that tomatoes tend to thrive in hot weather! Our 71st pack began on August 1 and we processed fresh pack tomatoes until October 17! Now that’s a long pack for central Indiana! We definitely had our share of challenges. Our growers dealt with the early extreme temperatures, harvesting in dry, dusty, 100°+ weather, followed by rain and mud with temperatures that dropped down into the mid 30’s. These adverse conditions resulted in fluctuations in the flow of fresh tomatoes to our processing plants. The result was almost daily schedule changes with some processing lines scheduled for half speed or idled. Regardless of the challenges that Mother Nature gave us, we had some beautiful tomatoes…red, high brix, and great quality. All in all, considering that we had the worst drought and heat wave in the last quarter of a century, followed by the fifth wettest September on record, and super cool temps the last three weeks of pack, we did really well. The good news was we ‘got the job done’! We put up a quality fresh pack that will satisfy our customers. This was difficult pack for the whole Red Gold Team. I want to thank everyone for making those extra efforts to make it successful. I guess if the tomato business was easy, everybody would want to do it! Anybody driving through the little town of Orestes has seen a landscape change. The Orestes school built in 1923 and purchased by Red Gold in 2004, has been demolished. We purchased it at an auction with the hope and possibility of making into our Corporate Headquarters. We actually had plans drawn up for the conversion from a grade school into an office, but ultimately, the plan was scrapped because a good layout and flow just could not be achieved. As it turns out, it was a good thing that we waited. The former Oakland school became available for us in 2011 and we found yet another and better use for the land when the Orestes school stood…returning it back to its original state…agricultural use! I’m not exactly sure what crop will be planted first, but next spring, you will see the area tilled and planted. Feliz Navidad Looking for an excuse to break out your brightly colored ponchos and shake your maracas? You don’t have to go South of the Border to celebrate Mexican culture; Red Gold is bringing the Fiesta to Alexandria, IN, on December 1. Employees and their spouses (or significant others) are invited to attend this year’s festive event, ‘Feliz Navidad – A Mexican Fiesta’, to celebrate our neighboring culture, as well as Christmas. There will be delicious food, authentic entertainment and, of course, the craziest DJ you’ve ever met…Kenny K. Don’t miss out on this cultural experience! Do I have “CHS”? What are the symptoms of “CHS”? CHS is a combination of several events culminating into one crazy awesome day causing excitement, accomplishment, and euphoria! This year was the first time anyone had ever experienced the symptoms of “CHS”! CHS is also known as Crush Hunger Saturday…ok, I’m done messing with your mind. Stewie & Blue at the Chili Cook-Off Since the Corporate group has vacated the Orestes office, it has been remodeled with new configurations, new color palette, new flooring and even some terrific artwork on the walls! Our next remodeling venture will be at the Geneva office, hopefully followed by Elwood and RG Transport. Brian & Winner of the Chili Eating Contest Crush Hunger Saturday was a huge success. The 1st ever Crush Hunger Saturday consisted of several events including the 1st Annual Red Gold 5K Run To Crush Hunger, the 27th Annual Red Gold Chili Cook-Off, the Indianapolis Colts Blue Saturday, the Indiana Pacers Fan Van, FLW Red Gold Pro Fisherman Todd Hollowell, Kenny K the DJ , 55 different vendors, the 1st Annual Red Gold Chili Eating Contest, a Farmers Market, and a Vintage Car Show! All of this entertainment packed into one day caused the mass outbreak of “CHS”… okay I’m done I swear! By the end of the day over $15,000 dollars was raised for charities, more than 700 people ran through Elwood, over 4,000 bowls of chili were consumed, and about 50 peoples’ pants got tighter. If you missed out on this event, I’m not going to lie, it was awesome… you should be upset. But don’t worry! Mark your calendars for October 12, 2013 for the 2nd Annual Crush Hunger Saturday! Start of the 5K Run Chili Eating Contest What Did Ya Catch? On Thursday, October 4, Red Gold hosted the third annual Kid’s Fishing Trip. This event is held toward the end of Fresh Pack, and was created by a fellow employee and Boy Scout, well, older Boy Scout, Erik Johnson. A few years ago, he put Red Gold in contact with the Boy Scouts and the program was born. During Fresh Pack, the Boy Scouts came on Tuesday evenings and worked with the seasonal children. The fishing trip is the grand finale of the season! Mike McAllister, Orestes HR Manager and Jacob Baker, local District Scout Executive, organized the event. The outing is held at the lake on Brian Reichart’s property. The Boy Scouts bring the fishing poles transand even supplied a bus for trans portation. The fishing was catch and release, but the eating was still good. Hot dogs were grilled while everyone fished. Twenty-one children aged 7 to 14, participated in the event. Others that helped at the event included Brian and Colt Reichart, Pedro Cardoza, Joni Allen, Tim Ingle, and Erik Johnson. Volunteers helped by tying hooks to the fishing lines, baiting the hooks, and removing the fish after they were caught. Todd Hollowell, our Red Gold professional fisherman, also lent a helping hand and even brought his Red Gold bass boat to display! Dozens of fish were caught; including a catfish that weighed close to 10 lbs… not a bad haul considering some of the kids had never fished before. All in all, it was a great day out at the lake enjoying another Red Gold Kid’s Fishing Trip! COMPLIMENT I have been eating food with ketchup for at least 55 years and can’t do without it at meals. Been married for 42 years, had my wife get nothing but Hunts or Heinz. Tried many other brands when on sale but always went back to the others. She picked up a bottle of yours and let me tell you, you have a great tasting ketchup. We will be getting your product from now on. Please keep up the great work. I will also tell my friends. Thanks! Leaving the copy machine without any paper is much the same as leaving the cap off the toothpaste tube. It’s not the big issues, but little courtesies that keep things from running smoothly…or lack thereof that sends people over the edge. Our conference room etiquette is one of those little things you can do to help other people’s days running a little smoother. Setting your phone or tablet on silent doesn’t necessarily mean it will be quiet. Before any meeting, consider who might need to contact you and if the call, text or email is really “buzz-worthy”. The constant buzzing of devices is distracting. If you are expecting an important call or text, set the vibration level to low, and do not lay your phone on the table, keep it in your pocket or a pad of paper to reduce sound. Check it immediately and leave the room to talk. If it is not important, silence the vibration. If you are not going to acknowledge messages during the meeting keep your phone in your pocket. If you are going to be late for another meeting turn off the meeting notifications on your phone and tablet ahead of time. This will help everyone keep their focus. Before leaving a conference room please: • Throw all trash away • Push chairs into table • Turn off lights when you leave • Reposition the blinds if they have been altered • If tables were moved, please reposition them to the original configuration www.TuttorossoTomatoes.com Tuttorosso, a favorite brand of canned tomatoes that have been used to make authentic Italian meals at home for generations, can now be found in more kitchens across America! Food, Fun and Hammers We love the Indiana State Fair and are proud our Red Gold booth is an annual “must-see” for thousands of fair-goers. The 2012 Fair was especially exciting for us. The DuPont Food Pavilion was completely redecorated, and as a result, we debuted a beautiful new booth and stage area. The unique booth is only a part of what makes a visit to Red Gold’s area special. Our 80 Red Gold Ambassadors spent more than 900 hours during the 17-day event, welcoming visitors. They handed out over 100,000 Red Gold coupons and Tuttorosso recipe cards to consumers! Our Ambassadors also helped thousands of our enthusiasts sign up for the Red Gold e-newsletter, and become fans of our Tuttorosso Facebook page. Another highlight of our booth is the spinning wheel, which was so popular that we gave out thousands of prizes. Red Gold pro-fisherman Todd Hollowell spent time with his fans at the booth, signing autographs and talking “fishing”. Foodies had a lot to love; Red Gold Home Economist Linda Wallace, and our State Fair project manager, Monica Pollom joined other area chefs in presenting cooking demos at the brand new Red Gold Culinary Corner. The Red Gold Salsa Contest, a popular and highly competitive annual event, was judged by Emily Jones, Red Gold Product Development Manager. She and the other judges had a tough job with this year’s stiff competition. Of course, our most loved Red Gold Ambassador, Stewie, was busy each day. He was in high demand and made appearances at the Red Gold Booth and participated in the Daily Parade all 17 days. Stewie sampled salsa at the Red Gold Salsa Contest, stacked Red Gold cans at the Canstruction Event, and hung out with Blue, the Colts Mascot, Cheri Daniels, Indiana’s First Lady, the Colts Cheerleaders and the State Fair Queen at the Clarian Heartland Walk. He even helped distribute water to the 650 walkers! Way to go Red Gold! The brand new Red Gold Culinary Corner debuted at the 2012 Indiana State Fair. In addition to Fair fun, Red Gold is very proud of our 74 volunteers for the Habitat for Humanity Event. The Habitat for Humanity Red Gold Volunteers put in over 300 hours within two days. Their efforts helped provide a Hoosier family with special needs, have a home to call their own at last.
