‗This roll, though stated by Lodge and
others as one of the 11th of Edw. III,
appears to be a roll of Edw. I, and contains
grants by Hen. II; John, when earl Morton
and also when king; by Hen. III. and Edw. I.
The words ―Antiquissime littere patentes &
Concessiones‖ appear at the heading, in the
hand-writing of the time of James I; at
which period it is evident it was considered
the most ancient roll in this office. It
contains sixty two inrolments, some of
which are defaced, and the first membrane is
much torn.‘
—
4
‗This roll contains several grants, mandates,
a charter of Limerick, &c.‘.
—
7
‗This roll contains liberates, writs of
injunction, recognizances, &c. and an
account of the records of the chancery prior
to the 28th of Edward I.‘
—
12
‗This appears to be a close roll; the contents
are, in general, liberates, grants,
presentations, deeds, writs, recognizances, a
writ of summons to parliament; it is a good
deal injured and defaced, particularly on the
back.‘
≠
Eight membranes (6 + 2) of the so-called Antiquissime roll were extant in 1828: six in RCI roll §1 and two more calendared in RCH as Rotulus Patens de anno 11 Edw. II. 2a pars (=RCI roll §9).
2 The ‗general observations‘ of 1819 state that RCI roll §4 consisted of 3 membranes; the ‗catalogue‘ in RCH records 4 membranes.

—
RCH includes an editorial note at the start of the roll (p. 19) to the effect that the Ms was considerably worn away (‗nonnulla detrita‘). This tallies with the fact that the first two articles listed in the
‗general observations‘ of 1819 (i.e. those concerning Robert Chapelyn and Nicholas Freysel respectively) are given in RCH as nos. 12 and 13 respectively, indicating that there were eleven illegible
items on the first damaged membrane of the roll.
4 RCI roll §7 is a controlment roll. These were normally written on one side only; this roll contains a single item on the dorso (RCH, p. 21, no. 33), namely an enrolment of an indenture of receipt for
money received by the treasurer as a loan from John Darcy.
5 RCI roll §9 is listed in RCH as if it were the second part of a patent roll; in fact it was the only portion of Patent Roll 11 Edward II extant in the nineteenth century; the roll listed in RCH as ‗part
one‘ comprised the two detached membranes of the Antiquissime roll (=RCI roll §1). RCH records (p. 21, no. 1) that the first item of RCI roll §9 was illegible, and that the following annotation was
found in the margin of the membrane: ‗Ric[ard]us de Prestou[n]. Com[m]issio.‘. The dorso begins with note (p. 23) to the effect that the first items abound with lacunae on account of wear and tear
sustained by the roll; the editors supplied conjectural readings in square brackets.

James F. Ferguson, ‗The ―mere English‖ and the ―mere Irish‖ ‘, Transactions of the Kilkenny Archaeological Society, 1 (1849–51), p. 508.
RCH records (p. 34, no. 33) that the final item on RCI roll §13 was totally obliterated by 1828; there were considerable lacunae in the previous four items (nos. 29–32).
8 Edward II abdicated on 20 Jan. 1327, but the Irish chancery did not stop dating letters in his name until May 1327.
9 RCH records (p. 37) that the start of this roll had perished by 1828. In total it gives a calendar for 144 numbered items for this roll, but nos. 9–10, 14–15, and 142–4 are listed as being illegible, while
portions of several others had perished by 1828 (e.g., nos. 16, 17, 84, 90, 126). RCH also records that a part of the membrane at the start of the dorso had been ripped away (‗Quedam hinc avulsa‘). All
this makes sense of the statement in the ‗general observations‘ of 1819 that the roll consisted of ‗136 legible inrolments‘. RCH, p. 37, no. 2 is an undated writ to have ‗6 balistas cum apparatu pro
garnestura Viridis Castri‘. RCH does not include an address clause, but from the ‗general observations‘ of 1819 it appears that the addressee was ‗John de Mauncestre‘.

§2
A total of 3 membranes (2 + 1) from Patent Roll 11 Edward III were extant in 1828, two in RCI roll §17 and a single membrane in RCI roll §18.
RCH (pp 43, 48) records that both the start and end of this roll were truncated. The items described in the ‗general observations‘ of 1819 as ‗partly destroyed‘ were the first four enrolments on the
dorso of the roll (RCH, p. 46, nos. 106–9).
12 A total of 11 membranes (3 + 8) from Patent Roll 20 Edward III were extant in 1828, three in RCI roll §20 and eight in RCI roll §21. RCH (p. 48) records that the start of RCI roll §20 was
mutilated: this explains why the numeration in the calendar begins at no. 26. The first three items on the dorso are also recorded as having been so obliterated that the editors could learn nothing from
them (p. 49, nos. 67–9); and likewise nos. 95–7 were illegible, which may indicate that these were the first items of a new membrane on the dorso of the roll.

RCI roll §22 was not a chancery roll and is not calendared in RCH. The pre-1922 PROI Chancery Finding Aids, vol. 1, lists it as an ‗Exchequer Account Roll‘. Its location in the record treasury was
3D.11a.1.
14 RCH records (p. 55) that only an occasional word was legible from nos. 39–40 to the end of the roll.
15 RCI roll §24 does not appear in RCH. The pre-1922 PROI Chancery Finding Aids, vol. 1, lists it as an ‗Exchequer Account Roll‘. Its location in the record treasury was 3D.11a.2.
16 The two articles listed in the ‗general observations‘ of 1819 as being the first items in RCI roll §25 (i.e. letters concerning Simon Ruly and Robert Babe respectively) are recorded in RCH as being on
the dorso of that roll (p. 57, nos. 128–9); they occur immediately after two illegible items (RCH, p. 57, nos. 126–7) which may suggest that they were the first legible items on a new membrane.

[sic] Ric‘ Walsh, id‘.‘
—
RCH records (p. 64) that a considerable amount of this roll had been lost and, where possible, the editors supplied conjectural readings in square brackets. Item nos. 52, 56, 58–62, 67 and 68 were
totally illegible. After no. 68 (p. 66), the calendar records that at this point in the roll there was a large hole (‗Hic seq[uitu]r in rotulo hiatus 25 digitorum [?i.e. 25 inches]‘), as a result of which many
other items may have been lost. The numeration in RCH continues after the hiatus from no. 69. Item no. 72 was illegible, but the editors learned from a note in the margin of the roll that it was a
commission to William Broun of the office of escheator in co. Meath.
18 The discrepancy in the number of enrolments recorded here is presumably the result of the large number of illegible and near-illegible items on the roll.
19 RCH records (p. 80) that the first item on the roll was utterly obliterated in 1828. The ‗General observations‘ of 1819 list the first legible item as being no. 4, concerning William de Karlell, (=RCH,
p. 81, no. 4), followed by ‗no. 2‘ concerning Richard Walsh (=RCH, p. 81, no. 5); but RCH also records a few stray words for nos. 2 and 3.

‗One side of this roll is damaged.‘
—
The ‗general observations‘ of 1819 and RCH each give different a different number of enrolments for RCI roll §33. The discrepancy is accounted for by the fact that RCH places under a single item
number (i.e. p. 90, no. 132) a series of writs of summons to the parliament to be held at Dublin at Hilary 1375.
21 RCH records that the first two items on the dorso of this roll (p. 101, nos. 64–5) were so obliterated and damaged that they were illegible in 1828. Edward III died on 21 June 1377, but the Irish
chancery did not stop enrolling letters in his name until July.
22 RCI roll §38 was an exchequer roll and consequently it was not calendared in RCH. Possibly it was a controlment roll, but there is no corresponding issue roll extant for this period (Irish exchequer
payments, p. 541, n. 1). The pre-1922 PROI Chancery Finding Aids, vol. 1, lists this roll as ‗2 Richard II Exchequer Reward Roll‘. Its location in the record treasury was 3D.11a.3.

RCH records that the first two items on the dorso were illegible in 1828 (p. 117, nos. 67–8).
RCI roll §41 is entitled Rotulus Patens de anno 5 Ric. II. 1a pars, but it was the only portion of Patent Roll 5 Richard II extant in 1828. RCI roll §42, described as the second part of this patent roll, was
in fact a close roll.
25 A total of 11 membranes (9 + 2) of Patent Roll 8 Richard II were extant in 1828: nine membranes were in RCI roll §43, and a further two detached membranes comprised RCI roll §44.
26 RCH records (p. 122) that the roll had sustained considerably injuries by 1828 from tearing, obliterations and rubbing [‗tam per laceraciones quam per obliterations et detrimenta temporis‘]. The
items on the roll were numbered in a modern hand beginning with number 6 – the fragments at the start of the roll having been omitted as they were utterly obliterated. The editors, however, were
able to detect seven items from this initial un-numbered section, and included what they could of these while retaining the numeration of the series. Thus the first seven items are numbered in RCH
as ‗1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 5 (b), and 5 (c).‘ The articles given in the ‗general observations‘ of 1819 as being the first legible items in the roll (i.e. those concerning John Tyrell and James de Penkeston‘) are RCH,
p. 122, nos. 5 (c) and 6 respectively.
27 RCH records that the first two articles on the dorso were so rubbed that they were illegible by 1828 (p. 126, nos. 193–4).

RCH records that the end of the roll was damaged by obliterations (p. 130).
Letters in this year were issued in the name of the marquis of Dublin, Robert de Vere.
30 The reference in the ‗general observations‘ of 1819 to the ‗first entry on the front of the second membrane‘ refers to an inspeximus of letters patent of Robert de Vere, marquis of Dublin, dated 26
Oct. [1387] 11 Richard II (=RCH, p. 138, no. 35). From this we may infer that the first membrane of RCI roll §49 contained 34 enrolments.

RCH records (p. 149) that this roll was badly torn.
RCH records that the beginning of Patent 18 Richard II was missing in 1828 (p. 151). The ‗[murage] charter for Kinsale‘, listed as the first legible item in the ‗general observations‘ of 1819, is the
second entry in RCH (p.151, no. 2).
33 A total of 14 membranes (10 + 3 + 1) from Patent Roll 1 Henry IV were extant in 1828. The main portion of the roll was RCI roll §56, consisting of ten membranes. Two other fragments were the
three membranes identified erroneously as ‗Close 1 Henry IV‘ (=RCI roll §57) and a single fragmentary membrane (=RCI roll §58).
34 RCH records that the first item on this membrane was illegible by 1828 due to wear and tear (p. 158, no. 1). Consequently, the article given in the ‗general observations‘ of 1819 as the first legible
item on the roll (concerning Thomas de Everdon) is the second item in RCH (p. 158, no. 2).

This seems to be an estreat roll; there is a considerable overlap between the contents of this roll and those of RCI rolls §63 and §64.
A total of 26 membranes (10 + 16) from Patent Roll 4 Henry VI were extant in 1828. RCI roll §63 comprised 10 membranes containing items mostly dated from March 1403 onwards; RCI roll §64
comprised 16 membranes, and the majority of the items were dated between Oct. 1402 and March 1403. Only one item dates from Sept. 1403 (RCH, p. 173, no. 39). RCH (p. 176) records that the
dorso of RCI roll §64 was considerably rubbed away by 1828.
37 A total of 10 membranes (8 + 2) from Patent Roll 5 Henry IV were extant in 1828, eight in RCI roll §65 and two in RCI roll §66.

‗The first membrane is torn.‘
§2
A total of 4 membranes (3 + 1) from Patent Roll 6 Henry IV were extant in 1828. Four were in RCI roll §67 and a single detached membrane comprised RCI roll §68.
This roll does not appear in the inventory made by the record commissioners in 1819, but I have assigned it to §69A, as its place in the series lies between RCI rolls §§69 and 70. RCH records (p.
180) that this roll, which had suffered great damage, was very recently discovered in the office of the crown bench. The discovery must have been made since 1819.
40 RCH records that nothing legible remained from items 1 to 38 of RCI roll §70. The article listed in the ‗general observations‘ of 1819 as the first legible item (i.e. the charter to the town of Trim) is
RCH, p. 185, no. 39.

A total of 22 membranes (1 + 20 + 1) from Patent Roll 10 Henry IV were extant in 1828. The main portion of the roll is RCI roll §74, which consisted of twenty membranes. Two fragmentary
rolls, each one membrane in length, are also from this roll (i.e. RCI rolls §73 and §75).
42 The article listed in the ‗general observations‘ of 1819 as being the first legible item on this roll (concerning Thomas Russell) is RCH, p. 201, no. 2.

A total of 8 membranes (4 + 4) from Patent Roll 1 Henry V were extant in 1828, four in RCI roll §82 and a further four membranes in RCI roll §83.
RCH records that the first item on this roll had perished (p. 203). The article listed in the ‗general observations‘ of 1819 as the first legible item (concerning Thomas Reynolds) is ibid., p. 203, no. 2
(in Rotulus Patens de anno 1 Hen. V. 2a pars).
45 RCH records that the first item on this roll had been lost (p. 203). The article listed in the ‗general observations‘ of 1819 as the first legible item (concerning William Waffr‘) is ibid., p. 203b, no. 2
(in Rotulus Patens de anno 2 Hen. V).
46 A total of 15 membranes (12 + 3) from Patent Roll 3 Henry V were extant in 1828. Twelve membranes are in RCI roll §84, misidentified as a close roll in RCH; a further three detached
membranes were calendared as Rotulus Patens de anno 3 Hen. V (=RCI roll §85). The articles listed in the ‗general observations‘ of 1819 as the first legible items on RCI roll §84 (concerning John Barret
and the manor of Clonliff) are calendared in RCH (p. 210) as nos. 17 and 18. This may indicate that these were the first two items on the second membrane of the roll; if so, we may surmise that the
first membrane of that roll contained 16 legible items.
47 RCH records that the lower portion of RCI roll §85 seemed to have been ripped and torn away, and that possibly many articles were destroyed as a consequence (p. 214).

A total of 6 membranes (4 +2) from Patent Roll 7 Henry V were extant in 1828, four in RCI roll §87 and two other membranes in the fragmentary RCI roll §88. The article listed in the ‗general

49 RCH includes a note at the end of this roll (p. 217), to the effect the roll seemed as if it should have continued much further, but that part of the contents were missing due to the tearing of the
membrane.
50 The article listed in the ‗general observations‘ of 1819 as being the first legible item on this roll (concerning Philip Wyot) is RCH, p. 217b, no. 2 (in Rotulus Patens de anno 9 Hen. V). RCH notes the
existence of an illegible item at the start of the dorso of this roll (ibid., p. 220).
51 The articles listed in the ‗general observations‘ of 1819 as being the second and third items on this roll (concerning John Bellewe and Anastasia widow of Sir David Wogan respectively) are

RCH records (p. 226) that the first four items had been obliterated by 1828. The articles listed in the ‗general observations‘ of 1819 as being the first and second on this roll (concerning John son of
Lucas Netterville and Henry Saundyr) are calendared as RCH, p. 226, nos. 5 and 7 respectively.
53 In RCH (p. 233) the dorso of the roll begins with a note: ‗These are the remnants we have collected from the first article on the dorso of this roll; no number was attributed [to this article] in the
margin of the membrane, perhaps in despair of learning its meaning‘.
54 RCH (p. 239) begins with a note to the effect that this roll was the most severely mutilated of all those discovered in the archive [Lat. in chartophylacio]. The editors continue: ‗We have sought to
discover the sense so far as we were able; and if success was often wanting, effort most certainly was not‘. The roll ends with an editorial note: ‗The rest is wanting.‘
55 The ‗general observations‘ of 1819 record four membranes, the first of which was damaged; RCH records that there were five membranes extant.

RCH (p. 242) records that the start of this roll had perished by 1828. ‗The remainder begins with the remnants of two articles, from which nothing could be gleaned. The subsequent articles are
numbered in the margin Nos. 1, 2 etc., from which it is to be assumed that the lost articles were not numbered‘.
57 A total of 6 membranes (4 + 1 + 1) from Patent Roll 9 Henry VI were extant in 1828. The pre-1922 PROI Chancery Finding Aids, vol. 1, lists three patent rolls under this regnal year. These are
RCI roll §103 (4 membranes); and two further fragments each only one membrane in length (RCI rolls §§104–105). The third of these (§105) is not calendared as a separate roll in RCH; rather §103
and §105 are calendared together under the title Rotulus Patens de anno 9 Hen. VI. 1a pars (i.e. RCI roll §103). A pencil annotation in the pre-1922 PROI Chancery Finding Aids records that RCI roll
§103 comprised items 1–19 and 27–31; RCI roll §105 comprised items 20–26. This is consistent with the ‗general observations‘ of 1819, which lists the first legible item on RCI roll §105 as a grant to
John Darcy; this grant is RCH, p. 250, no. 20, which comes immediately after an editorial note to the effect that the first two articles on this membrane had perished and a third had suffered a great
deal.
58 RCI roll §105 is calendared in RCH, p. 250, nos. 20–26. For details, see previous note.

RCH records (p. 265) that this roll was endorsed as follows: ‗Transcript of the writs of Nicholas Strangways, chief chamberlain of the exchequer of Ireland in the time of Giles Thorndon, treasurer
of Ireland.‘
60 RCI roll §113 is not calendared in RCH as it was not a chancery roll. According to the ‗general observations‘ of 1819, the first item was a commission to take an assize, followed by a roll of
nominations of attorney. It is listed in the pre-1922 PROI Chancery Finding Aids, vol. 1, as ‗Pleas of assize in Plea Roll‘. Its location in the record treasury was 3D.11a.4.

In RCH the items for 28 Henry VI (13 items) and 29 Henry VI (44 items) are numbered separately, both series starting from no. 1.
RCH includes a note (p. 267) to the effect that the remainder of this roll was comprised of two fragmentary membranes, the sense of which the editors were unable to learn.
63 RCH records (p. 269) that nothing useful was to be gleaned from the two surviving membranes of this roll because they were so rubbed and obliterated.
