P2 Memorial Day By Autumn Althof PHSPP Sophomore Staff Writer Community This year, Memorial Day is held on the 27th of May, which is the last Monday of May. Memorial Day honors the men and women who died while they were in the military. To celebrate this holiday, many people visit cemeteries and memorials. Volunteers often place American flags on each grave site at national cemeteries. It is also a tradition to fly the flag of the United States at half mast from dawn until noon. Since Memorial Day is a federal holiday, all additional government offices are closed, as are schools, businesses and many other organizations. Many people see Memorial Day weekend as an opportunity to go on a short vacation or visit family or friends, but do not forget this day’s purpose. Memorial Day began as an event to honor union soldiers who had died during the American Civil War. It was encouraged by the way people in the South honored their dead. After World War I, it was extended to include all men and women, who died in any war or military action. It was originally named Decoration Day and was held on the 30th of May. The current name did not come into use until after World War II. In the year 1968, the Uniform Holiday Bill was passed so that federal holidays could be used as three day weekends. It was a while until all the states recognized this new policy where Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday of May. Mother’s Day By Emily Brokaw PHSPP Sophomore Writer Mother’s Day is always the second Sunday of May and this year it is on May 12th. Mother’s Day is a day to honor and celebrate moms everywhere. The idea of having an official Mother’s day in the U.S. was presented by Julia Ward Howe in 1872. The first known celebration of Mother’s Day was in 1908, when a woman named Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother in America. Mother’s Day is celebrated in 46 states, on different days. Most families celebrate Mother’s Day by buying their mom gifts or by having a nice dinner. This Mother’s Day do not forget to give your mom something. Community Armed Forces Day By Jasmine Hardcastle PHSPP Sophomore Staff Writer Armed Forces Day celebrates all of the people in the United States who served, or are still serving, in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, National Guard, or the Coast Guard. Louis Johnson, the then secretary of defense, created this day on August 31st 1949, so that the three separate holidays (Army Day, Air Force Day, and Navy Day) would be combined into one consecutive day. This day is set aside, so instead of only representing only three of the branches in the military, all of them are included as well. This day is celebrated on the third Saturday in May, which is around the 19th. Not to confuse this holiday with Memorial Day, which celebrates all of those who died for the U.S. military, or Veterans Day, which celebrates all the living that fought for the U.S. military. Armed Forces Day represents all those who serve us, as a whole. There are many ways to celebrate this holiday. For instance, some Boy Scout groups like to hold an Armed Forces Day bash, which is a celebration presented by the scouts for their families. You could also visit a military base open house near you, talk to the men and women on duty, and learn more about the military. Another way to celebrate this day is to just be a member of your community in a helpful way, such as volunteering for a soup kitchen or giving blood. These are all great ways to celebrate this honorable holiday in a way that is affordable and respectful. The first Armed forces Day had a theme, “Teamed for Defense.” This represented the alliance of the military branches and their close ties to each other. The original purpose of the holiday was to help United States Citizens be more educated about their military forces. Each of the branches of the military was asked to sponsor this day and be more a part of it, which they all did willingly. There are many holidays, such as Armed Forces Day, throughout the year that may pass by without you knowing. So spread the word about Armed Forces Day, because it really is important to notice and celebrate. Thank you to all the men and women who join the ArmedForces and protect our great country!!!
