MAT Camp 2017 Classes Sorted by Category Instrumental 8 am- Reedmaking for Double Reed Players, for gr. 8 and up (or by instructor permission). Instructor: Elizabeth Young Rennick. For oboe and bassoon players only. Reedmaking is fun and relaxing. Come and learn how to adjust your own reeds, and the fundamentals of starting from scratch! Each student will take home 2 new reeds that work. Class fee- $10. 9 am- Bassoon Technique, for gr. 7 and up (or by instructor permission). Instructor: Dr. Michele Bowen Hustedt. For beginning, intermediate, and advanced bassoonists of all ages. Come learn techniques for improving your playing and how to adjust your reeds. 9 am- Brass Technique, for gr. 7 and up. Instructor: Dr. Shannon Roberts. For students who have completed one or more years in school band, or private lessons. Get ready to impress yourself! We will be covering every skill necessary to become a true virtuoso, and you will hear how amazing you can sound! 9 am- Clarinet Technique, for gr 7 and up. Instructor: Dr. Blake McGee. For students who have completed one or more years in school band, or private lessons. This class will work on building technique for clarinet players. We’ll work on scales, fingerings, articulations and making a good sound. 9 am- Flute Technique, for gr. 7 and up. Instructor: Dr. Erin Murphy. Would you like to improve your skills as a flutist? Would you like to challenge yourself? Want some help from a more experienced flutist to make "improvement" less frustrating and more productive? This class aims to diagnose, on an individual and group level, specific areas of flute technique that will help you improve. Not only will we cover the basics, but we will also explore some fun advanced and extended techniques, such as double tonguing, flutter tonguing, and singing and playing. Emerge with some fresh tools to help you grow as a flutist! 9 am- Oboe Technique, for gr 7 and up (or by instructor permission). Instructor: Dr. Elizabeth Young Rennick. For students who have completed two or more years in school band, or private lessons, or who are transferring from another instrument. Who knew working on technique could be so much fun? We will cover methods and exercises for all levels of oboe in this class. 9 am- Saxophone Technique, for gr. 7 and up. Instructor: Rob Verdi. For students who have completed one or more years in school band, or private lessons. Take advantage of this chance to work with the man with all the saxophones- Rob Verdi of Saxophobia! Students will be introduced to over a dozen variations of Adolphe Sax’s 1846 invention including a curved sopranino, plastic alto, straight tenor, connosax, slide sax, bass and even a rare 6 ft contrabass sax. Students will also work on tone production, intonation, and on helpful tips to improve ability. 9 am- The Life of Toys Percussion Technique, for gr. 7 and up. Instructor: David Thalmann. No other instrument category has as many different options as does percussion. We'll cover proper techniques for tambourine to triangles, timpani to marimba. If you're really nice, I'll even show you how to wrap your own mallets. 10 am- Brass Ensemble, for gr 9 and up. Instructor: Dr. Shannon Roberts. So you play brass? Cool. But do you really PLAY brass? This class will turn your musical skills inside out and upside down, and you’ll come out the other side with a whole new take on ‘playing brass’! Class performs at the end of the week. 10 am- Clarinet Ensemble, for gr 9 and up. Instructor: Dr. Blake McGee. Join together in a small ensemble of like instruments to create a beautiful choir! Class performs at the end of the week! 10 am- Flute Ensemble, for gr 9 and up. Instructor: Dr. Erin Murphy. Calling all flutes and piccolos! Lets combine our flute-tastic-ness and play some beautiful flute music together! Participants will gain ensemble experience while tackling performance issues specific to the flute/piccolo. Learn how to balance dynamic levels within an ensemble, how to match articulation styles, how to bring out different textures/colors, and how to improve intonation. Most importantly, enjoy a fun variety of flute ensemble literature and make some new flute friends! 10 am- Doublereed Ensemble, for gr 9 and up (or by instructor permission). You'll not only learn the basics of many different instruments, but also experience the cohesive energy of your fellow players. High energy and lots of fun. You don't have to be a percussionist to participate. If you have drum sticks and/or mallets, bring them! 10 am- Saxophone Ensemble, for gr. 9 and up. Instructor: Rob Verdi. For saxophones of all shapes and sizes, and Rob Verdi has them all. You won’t believe how great a room full of saxophones can sound until you make beautiful and fun music with ONLY saxophonists! Class performs at the end of the week. 11 am- Jazz Band, for gr. 9 and up. Instructor: Dr. Shannon Roberts. Jazz, jazz, JAZZ! One of the most popular ensembles at MAT Camp, you will sit side-by-side with staff members in this explosion of grooves, licks and tunes. If you’re tired of the same old black and white jazz band experience, this is EXACTLY what you need to rediscover what makes this music so alive! Preferred instruments include saxophone, trombone, trumpet, guitar, piano, drumset, and bass, but is also open to ALL instruments. Violin player, no problemeo. 1 pm- Modern Band, for gr. 9 and up. Instructor: Dr. Shannon Roberts. Take everything you know about band and toss it out the window. We are going to shake things up and turn them on their head! This class is all about how to make music GROOVE in a Modern Band setting, and we won’t be playing your average pieces. If you’ve ever been bored in band you NEED to take this class to see what making music can and should be like! 2 pm- Irish Flute and Whistle, for gr. 8 and up. Instructor: Dr. Erin Murphy. A course just for Irish whistle and Irish flutes! Learn how to boost your flute sound, especially those pesky low D notes! Explore your tone colors, from dark and reedy, to hollow and haunting. Tackle Irish whistle intonation issues and pitfalls. Learn about session playing rules/etiquette, and how they apply to the flute/whistle. Challenge your sheet music comfort zone with some tips to memorize tunes and increase your ability to learn by ear. In addition, learn some fun Irish repertoire for flute and whistle. Brush up your Irish ornamentation and increase your ability to roll, cran, and tap. Instructor will bring a low D whistle to try if you are interested! Learn about online resources to help your continued learning. 2 pm- Jazz Improvisation, for gr. 8 and up. Instructor: Rob Verdi. Does soloing make you uncomfortable? Leave you jittery and uncertain? There’s a method to the madness when it comes to having an awesome solo. Come to this class to get things figured out, and put in some practice time using your new-found skills. 2 pm- Life in the Pits, for percussion players gr. 8 and up. Instructor: David Thalmann. There's a lot more that goes on in the Pits of musical theater than most people realize, especially when it comes to percussion. Learn the do's and don’ts that will make your experience so much better. Can you actually fit 30 different instruments into an 8x8 space? 3 pm- Rock Drum Set, for percussionists gr. 7 and up. Instructor: Kevin Moore. Always wanted to find that inner rock star? Let me help bring it out! I can teach you the basic beats and fills to give any rock band a solid foundation. We will go over some of the worlds most used rhythms and see how they can be applied to any situation. 3 pm- Jazz History and Listening, for gr. 6 and up. Instructor: Rob Verdi. This is a Jazz history class with an emphasis on listening and watching historic video clips, mixed with a bit of live performance to demonstrate certain styles of playing. 4 pm- Write This Way, for percussionists gr. 9 and up. Instructor: David Thalmann. More and more composers are writing and highlighting Percussion, but they don't always understand what we can and cannot do with our instruments. We'll take it from the basic do's and don’ts to actually composing a piece that will be performed. Orchestra and Strings Block Class-8 am; 2 pm; 3 pm. This class will include a thorough overview of the basic techniques of playing the double bass, including stance, right and left hand issues, bass care and cartage, vibrato, sound production, gear, and repertoire. 9 am- Cello Technique 2, for gr. 9 and up (or by instructor permission). Instructor: Sam Runolfson. For cello players who have played at least 3 years in school orchestra, generally entering 9th grade or older, including adults. This class will give focused attention to student’s technical needs. Both left hand and right hand technique will be addressed for all students. Students will play excerpts, work on pieces as a group, and have fun! This is a great opportunity to look at some cello technique from a different perspective! 9 am- Violin/Viola Technique Olympics II, for gr. 9 and up (or by instructor permission). Instructor: Sara Gunnell. Advanced Small Muscle Athletes! Now is the time to strut your stuff. How good ARE you at spiccato... vibrato.... shifting? Do you wish to do anything better or want to start something new? From basics to advanced skills, Sara Gunnell will help you with what you need as a player. Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals will be awarded based on accomplishment and improvement. Good Luck! 10 am- Chamber Orchestra for Strings, for gr. 9 and up (or by instructor permission). Instructor: James Arbizu. We will be learning some exciting and challenging repertoire suited for the Chamber Orchestra. Because of its small size, “lean and mean,” it will be a playing experience where your efforts will be immediately felt and heard, learning music not typically done in a regular full orchestra. For violin, viola, cello and bass players only. 11 am- Not-Trad String Technique, for gr. 8 and up. Instructor: Sam Runolfson. Not sure what else is there besides classical music? This class will explore techniques that will make exploring the world of non-classical music easier. Three pieces will be covered: A bluegrass/fiddling piece, a jazz piece, and a pop piece. Techniques covered through the pieces will include back-up skills, some improvisation, and alternative bowing techniques. Let's explore new music together! Class will have music at a range of difficulties, from beginning to ADV. All students will need to set aside some time to work on music during the week. Instruction will be differentiated for different experience levels, more advanced students can expect level appropriate challenges. 11 am- Violin/Viola Technique Olympics 1, for gr. 6-8 (or by instructor permission). Instructor: Sara Gunnell. Calling all Small Muscle Athletes! You are summoned to the challenge of Technique Olympics. Compete in areas of pitch accuracy, bowing, L.H. posture, R.H. posture, tone quality, bow placement and more! Chances for winning gold are based on individual accomplishment and improvement. For cello players who have played at least 1 year in school orchestra. This class will give focused attention to student’s technical needs. Instructor: Eric Hansen. This class will explore the basic aspects of improv, with lots of daily application and trying them out. Come join in for a fun journey to an area not often explored by string players! 4 pm- Chord Crazy, for gr. 7 and up. Instructor: Sara Gunnell. Did you ever want to read chords, create alternate melodies, understand chord progressions or write your own compositions? All these possibilities will be yours and more! Join Sara Gunnell to learn the basics of chord reading, writing, and playing. This class will have you playing chords on your instrument and creating music of your own. Go "Chord Crazy" with Sara and you will have the tools to play in any band and write pieces of your own! 4 pm- Metal Band for Strings, for gr. 9 and up. Instructor: Sam Runolfson. This music will focus on putting together non-traditional strings music. Students will learn Rock music arr. for strings. Students will work on non-classical technique, perform a piece learned during the camp, and work on their headbanging skills! Do you want to ROCK out? Then this is class for you. The music is advanced, so if you join the class be ready to work hard and have fun! 4 pm- Old-Time American Dance Music, for gr. 9 and up. Instructor: Danielle Montague-Judd. Learn the basics of playing for contra dances, a type of old-time dance with a live band and caller--think Saturdaynight barndances. Contra dancing is first known from the 1700s and is enjoyed today all over the world. Music includes reels, hoedowns, jigs, and waltzes. We will teach several tunes and discuss how to develop solid rhythm for the dancers. All acoustic folk instruments welcome, including fiddle, flute, whistle and other wind instruments, guitar, bass, dulcimer, piano, and others (ask instructor). Piano Block Class-8 am; 2 pm; 3 pm. This course is for advanced piano students (must know all your major scales) to learn jazz chord voicings, accompaniment and improvisation techniques. This course will teach you the “minimalist approach” which makes jazz piano easy and fun. You’ll be jammin’ by the end of the week! 1 pm- Rhythm Explorers – Piano, for gr. 7-8 (or by instructor permission). Instructor: Jayne Galloway. Join our band of explorers as we decode the most important part of music - rhythm. It drives the music. Listeners tune into rhythm more than anything else. It is one of a musician's biggest responsibilities. Among other quests, we will play cup games as a group and perform on the last day of class. 2 pm- Piano Master Class, for gr. 9 and up (or by instructor permission). Instructor: Jayne Galloway. Must have at least 5 years of piano experience. Originally invented by Franz Liszt, a master class is a great way to experience a music lesson by participating and observing. Join with other piano students for a daily group class to perform for each other and polish pieces you are currently learning. Learn performance tips, try out your memory, discover new ways to practice effectively, and stretch your listening skills. This is a hands-on class that will focus on the finer details of attack, tone, and phrasing. They’ll coach you through duet harmonies, tone matching, on-the-spot harmonizing, and a capella basics so you’ll feel confident in jumping in on any campfire song circle or road trip jam! Accompanied by Derik on guitar, students will work in pairs and small groups to perform a duet by the end of the workshop. 10 am- Pops Choir, for gr. 6 and up. Instructor: Tara Johnson. What do you get when you combine upbeat music, singing in harmony, and fun with friends? Pops Choir, of course! Join us in singing some of your favorite music. Class performs at the end of the week. 10 am- Songwriting Workshop, for gr. 8 and up. Instructor: Derik Nelson. Required- Each student will need to bring a smartphone or tablet and headphones to participate in the class. From idea to performance, this workshop is designed to help budding singer/songwriters bring their own original song to life! Derik will teach you the fundamentals of pop music theory, ideal song form and structure, and the life cycle of a song. From there, Derik will mix one-on-one coaching with group exercises and student collaborations to build your confidence, creativity, and individual voice. Once your new song is outlined, Derik will provide performance and song delivery coaching. Each student will be able to perform his or her own original song by the end of the week. 11 am- Chamber Choir, for gr. 8 and up. Instructor: Tara Johnson. This advanced singing class is perfect for vocalists who want to learn challenging and rewarding music in a fast-paced setting while honing your vocal skills and musicianship at the same time. Class performs at the end of the week. Block Class- 1 pm; 2 pm- Musical Comedy Improv, for gr. 8 and up. Instructor: Katrina Phillip. This is a 2hour block class that takes the 1 pm and 2 pm hours. In this class you will practice your improv comedy skills, and add MUSIC to your scenes and lines. Katrina will give you various exercises and games to open your creative juices, and teach techniques on how to incorporate songs into your improv scenes. 1 pm- Super Star Singing, for gr. 7 and up. Instructor: Derik Nelson. Pop/vocals class for singers. Using contemporary R&B/pop singers as influential examples, Derik will coach students through the best ways to prepare, approach, and develop a pop sensibility with their vocals outside of classical, choral, or musical theatre training. This is a must for students who love to sing, but are unsure of how to develop their own authentic and unique “voice” with pop sensibilities. 3 pm- Musical Theater, for gr 6-8 and gr. 9 and up. Instructors: Katrina Phillip, MAT Camp’s favorite dance choreographer and Derik Nelson, Lead Guitarist on the hit TV show “Glee.” Together, they will instruct these two performance classes. Derik’s 4-year experience on the Hollywood set of “Glee” will help the group learn a “Glee"-style song with pop-styled choral harmonies quickly. Katrina Phillip will teach choreography and add her enthusiastic magic to the performance – with a culminating performance of the song at the end of camp! 4 pm- Vocal Jazz, for gr. 9 and up. Instructor: Dr. Shannon Roberts. If you love singing in harmony, join our Vocal Jazz Ensemble! Students will learn to sing music from renowned vocal arrangers who write contemporary jazz, classic swing, bebop tunes and pop. Male and female singers are welcome! Class performs at the end of the week. Theater & Dance 9 am- Sketch Comedy Writing, for gr. 8 and up. Instructor: Katrina Phillip. Writers and performers come one, come all! Here you will learn and discover various styles of comedy, and then apply different techniques and strategies to write your own scenes. 9 am- Intro to Acting, for gr. 6 and up. Instructor: Dalten Nelson. Intro to Acting includes the history and the evolution of the different styles of acting. Improv games, acting icebreakers, partner scene work and monologue dissection. The last half of this class will be a workshop with individual pairs presenting their scene in front of the entire class. 10 am- Dance Legends, for gr. 8 and up. Instructor: Katrina Phillip. In this class you will watch various dance and choreographer legends from the 20th & 21st century. After watching clips we will then discuss what made their style so legendary, and perhaps this can help us discover and define a style and technique of our own! 10 am- Tap, for gr. 3 and up. Instructor: Lisa Hansen. Learn rhythm and basic steps while learning fun tap choreography and combinations. Bring tap shoes if you have them, or hard sole shoes will work also! Students should wear t-shirt and leggings if possible. 11 am- Choreography, for gr. 6 and up. Instructor: Katrina Phillip. Katrina will teach many different approaches and ways in order to create movement. Those with or without dance experience are welcome. The goal is to use these techniques to open yourself creatively, so keep in mind that these strategies very well can be used for other art forms as well. 11 am- Shadow Theatre, for gr. 6 and up. Instructor: Summer Olsson. Shadow puppetry is more than just making a dog's head with your hand. It's a magical storytelling art where anything is possible. You can create alien ships that coast through space and drop balloons onto Earth. You can show a close-up of the inside of a flower. You can make a pod of swimming whales grow wings and fly away. With just poster board and wire, you will make moveable puppets for the screen. Learn the basics of shadow theater, including lighting techniques and how to cut intricate designs. Over the week we will develop a shadow show for your friends and family. Block Class- 1 pm; 2 pm- Musical Comedy Improv, for gr. 8 and up. Instructor: Katrina Phillip. This is a 2hour block class that takes the 1 pm and 2 pm hours. In this class you will practice your improv comedy skills, and add MUSIC to your scenes and lines. Topics and themes may include old age makeup and how to apply it, latex prosthetics and application, and animal/creature makeup application. Katrina Phillip will teach choreography and add her enthusiastic magic to the performance – with a culminating performance of the song at the end of camp! 4 pm- Stage Management, for gr. 7 and up. Instructor: Summer Olsson. The Stage Manager keeps everything in a show running smoothly. They know what goes where, who goes when and how anything goes at all. They are a key position in any successful theater production. They are the assistant to the director and production staff during the rehearsal period, and then become the person in charge of the production during the actual performances. Do you work well under pressure? Would you like to learn how? In this class you will learn how to put together a prompt book (and what one is), organize lots of people and things at the same time, and keep your cool when everything seems like it's falling apart. 4 pm- Sound Tech, for gr. 8 and up. Instructor: Will Crompton. Students will learn the basics of sound equipment, engineering, and processing. Through the course of the week, students will gain experience in setting up and testing a sound system, operating equipment for performances, and properly disassembling and storing equipment. Learn how to boost your flute sound, especially those pesky low D notes! Explore your tone colors, from dark and reedy, to hollow and haunting. Tackle Irish whistle intonation issues and pitfalls. Learn about session playing rules/etiquette, and how they apply to the flute/whistle. Challenge your sheet music comfort zone with some tips to memorize tunes and increase your ability to learn by ear. In addition, learn some fun Irish repertoire for flute and whistle. Brush up your Irish ornamentation and increase your ability to roll, cran, and tap. Instructor will bring a low D whistle to try if you are interested! Come "squeeze the bag" with us as we discover the many realms of bagpiping. Did you know there are many different types of bagpipes--from many different cultures-- each with their own unique sounds and challenges? Would you like to learn more? Maybe you are thinking about getting started or are just getting started, or maybe you are looking to add some insight to your current piping experience. This course will give an overview on the many different types of bagpipes--some that you might have not known about--and help to facilitate some practical applications to those with piping questions (especially bellows-blown pipes). While at times, the class will be lecture/presentation style, we will also have discussion/dialogue time, and some practical application time for those who have their pipes with them. The Intermediate Guitar Class is for guitarists with previous experience that are ready for more challenging and interesting music and technique. Learn the basics of playing for contra dances, a type of old-time dance with a live band and caller--think Saturday- night barndances. Contra dancing is first known from the 1700s and is enjoyed today all over the world. Music includes reels, hoedowns, jigs, and waltzes. We will teach several tunes and discuss how to develop solid rhythm for the dancers. All acoustic folk instruments welcome, including fiddle, flute, whistle and other wind instruments, guitar, bass, dulcimer, piano, and others (ask instructor). Art & Crafts 9 am- Altered Books, for gr. 6 and up. Instructor: JoAnn Memmott. This is a fun class to take with your parent. You can both make your own altered book. Altered books are fun because you take a nice hard back, discarded book, and turn it into a work of art. All supplies are provided. Altered books might have secret drawers, pop ups, fold out and more. The only limitations are our imaginations. Come and make a fun altered book with us. This exploration class will use various media: pencils, markers, crayons and watercolors to create drawings of a basic still life, portraiture and a self-expressive mandala. Why use just one media when you can combine many into one with scraps of all kinds of texture to create a collage? This class will combine drawing and painting, with actual textures to create symbolism in a mixed-media collage. Instructor: Summer Olsson. Shadow puppetry is more than just making a dog's head with your hand. It's a magical storytelling art where anything is possible. You can create alien ships that coast through space and drop balloons onto Earth. You can show a close-up of the inside of a flower. You can make a pod of swimming whales grow wings and fly away. With just poster board and wire, you will make moveable puppets for the screen. Learn the basics of shadow theater, including lighting techniques and how to cut intricate designs. Over the week we will develop a shadow show for your friends and family. 11 am- Pastel Painting, for gr. 6 and up. Instructor: Shelley Piiparinen. Nupastels are a fun way to study color and value in drawing. In this class we will discuss color harmonies and apply that to drawing and painting with pastels. In this mixed media art class, students are going to get a healthy dose of the magical history of unicorns and dragons while learning how to use basic shapes to draw the forms of the animals! Once the creatures are drawn students will fill them in Eric Carle-style, using bits of colored paper and magazine clippings. Students may bring a photo of their favorite unicorn or dragon to learn how to re-create that particular animal using the techniques taught in this class. Forget texting and Snapchat-- let’s throw it back to the art of beautiful handwriting! In this workshop, you’ll be learning to calligraph a card and envelope to send to your BFF. Learn the basics of pointed pen modern calligraphy. This isn’t your grandma’s snail-mail! Riana will show you how to assemble your calligraphy nib and holder, hand-dip into ink, and create basic whimsical strokes and letters to address your envelope. Finally, she’ll show you her favorite watercolor painting techniques and metallic ink embellishments for you to maximize your correspondence creativity. You’ll leave with a gorgeous piece of envelope artwork addressed to your best friend, plus your very own calligraphy pen to keep up your snail-mail adventures beyond the summer! Contrast, highlight, shadow, composition, unity, emphasis: how can these elements and principles help your photos tell the story you want them to? Using Adobe Photoshop as well as student’s smartphones and apps, students will learn how to alter these aspects of their photos and add filters and text to create images that stand out in the sea of visual images on social media and tell their own visual story. We will also learn how to turn a photo into a painting. Like the impressionists we will create thick brush strokes or change the colors and style to a work of modern art. Instructors: Aaron & Kalani Dalton. Learn to play the popular collectible card game, Magic: The Gathering. Magic is a strategic card game that uses reading, critical thinking, and math skills to try to out-duel your opponent. Instructor: Ryan Corbett. Note- you must bring your own vehicle! Come experience the exciting world of "Big Air" R/C Car jumping! Come learn how to "fly" your vehicle through air, learning how to do back flips and front flips. Participants will learn how to control their vehicle in the air to do tricks and safe landings. We will be launching vehicles as far as 100 feet through the air and up to 30 feet high! Launching ramps, and instruction will be provided. Participants must have their own vehicles, vehicles will NOT be provided. Vehicles must be high quality and be able to achieve speeds of at least 15 miles per hour. While we will plan the jumps to minimize damage to the vehicles, going big almost always means you will break something, so make sure to preorder common broken parts and bring them with you. The Beatles were an amazing musical group--composers, performers, artists, idols, trendsetters, borrowers, inventors of pop music subgenres. In retrospect John Lennon dubbed the Beatles,"The greatest show on earth, for what it was worth." For many, their music has a magic all of its own. How was their magic made? How was the group unique? And how did they get into a position to wield such influence? We will study musical and other cultural issues related to the Beatles and their music. Music at the “edges”--far away from the “central” music that the greatest number of people in our culture agree to like; far away from the “popular.” Some of this music is not considered “music” at all by many people. We will examine types of extreme metal that seem to possess a very high noise and chaos content; or rap, which seems to possess no melodic or harmonic content at all; and other genres as well. We will explore music at the edges, trying to understand what makes it tick--and what makes us, as listeners, tick. 11 am- Star Wars vs. Wagner, for gr. 6 and up. Instructor: Elizabeth Young Rennick. Come explore the music and cinematic elements of light and darkness as we use the principles of Wagner operas to reveal hidden meanings in the epic saga of Star Wars. Instructor: Blake McGee. Taught by Blake McGee. A variety of satisfying and easy “quick bread” recipes will guide aspiring bakers to explore the joys of making bread at home. We will learn some of the science behind chemical leavening, ingredients, and heat applications while making tasty loaves of sweet and savory breads. A scary dragon, a friendly dinosaur, a purple dog, a polka dot pig...with some old newspaper, glue, paint, and your creativity the possibilities are endless. Instructor: Cindy Adams. Come play with beads and ropes while creating projects to wow your friends and give as gifts. 1 pm- Friendship Bracelets, for gr. 3-5. Instructor: Danielle Montague-Judd. Learn the basics of knotting with thread, cord, and fiber. Then embellish your designs with beads and charms to create one-of-a-kind bracelets! Class fee- $5. 1 pm- Photo Art, for gr. 3-5. Instructor: Shelley Piiparinen. Learn how to enhance photos and combine two or more photos into one fantastic photo. Students will be introduced to Adobe Photoshop, learn how to use layers and utilize elements and principles of art with the tools to change their photos into works of art. 1 pm- Popsicle Crafts, for gr. 3-5. Instructor: Clea Comte. Do you like building with Popsicle sticks? From a marble run to a Ferris Wheel we are going to use our imaginations and make some awesome structures. Come learn what you build with simple Popsicle sticks. Class fee- $5. 1 pm- Tumbling and Partner Acrobatics, for gr. 3-5. Instructor: Summer Olsson. Balance someone on your feet, create a tower of people, dive roll over your friends! Learn safe, beginning (but impressive) partner acrobatics, no experience necessary. Use your body to tell a story and command the stage! We will learn the building blocks of partner balancing, lifts, rolls, and handstand tricks. After a week of fun, wow your family with a performance. Block Class- 1 pm and 2 pm- Stars of the Sea, for gr. 3-5. Instructor: Riana Nelson. Join this cast of tiny ocean animals preparing for their own underwater talent show! Ideal for your theatrically inclined 8, 9, or 10 year old, this class blends music, movement games, and singing. Through Riana’s original modified “mini-musical” STARS OF THE SEA, students will be assigned their unique sea animal, learn 3+ short songs as a group, and each student will memorize at least two scripted lines to speak. Themes include: compassion for other creatures, embracing your individual special talents, and kindness to Mother Earth. 2 pm 2 pm- Clowning and Slapstick, for gr. 3-5. Instructor: Summer Olsson. Goof off in class! Practice silly walks, ridiculous faces, hilarious voices! Learn to go onstage with nothing and make the audience laugh. Discover safely tripping and falling, running into the wall and other physical comedy. Anyone can be funny. With games and coaching, you will learn the basics of being a clown. At the end of the week, you will have a short performance for family and friends. Class fee- $2. 2 pm- Duct Tape, for gr. 3-5. Instructor: Jody Comte. What can you make out of duct tape? Learn how to make everything from a wallet to a hat with the coolest duct tape you have ever seen. This class is for those with great creativity! Class fee- $10. 2 pm- Irish Dance, for gr. 3-5. Instructor: Danielle Montague-Judd. For Riverdance fans and dance lovers alike--this class will get students moving and on their toes! Learn basic Irish dance steps including the reel and jig, as well as group (ceili) dances. Please wear secure shoes--tennis shoes, dance shoes or elasticized ballet slippers--and stretchy pants or shorts. 2 pm- Legos, for gr. 3-5. Instructor: Cindy Adams. There will be thousands of Legos available for you to borrow in building you projects. 2 pm- Super Identities, for gr. 3-5. Instructor: Natalie Martinez. Have you ever wanted to have superpowers? Ever daydreamed about being a hero? In this class we will create our own superheroes complete with suits, powers and names. Come see who you’ll turn out to be! Class fee- $3. 3 pm 3 pm- Blue Little People Squad, for gr. 4-7. Instructor: David Thalmann. Think Blue Man Group, only shorter. The ensemble will learn to take everyday items and turn them into musical instruments. We'll make tubes tonal, candy dandy, and pails wail. 3 pm- Card Making, for gr. 3-5. Instructor: Stacee Corbett. Come learn how to make handmade cards using techniques such as stamping, masking, and dry embossing, to name a few. We'll make pop up cards, sparkled and bejeweled masterpieces, and more. Class fee- $10. 3 pm- Children’s Chorus, for gr. 3-5. Instructor: Heather Douglass. Come along on an exciting adventure and discover the fun you can have using your voice and body to make music. We'll cover some basics of caring for and using your "instrument" and explore all the amazing things it can do while we learn a variety of songs. So bring your friends along and come make some new ones as we create a magical musical experience together. Fly an enormous dragon through the air. Be one of four people that walk a giant skeleton through the crowd. In Parade Puppets, you will help design, paint and assemble gigantic puppets that can stand out above a crowd. Once in a while a class comes along that your child will talk about for a long time. Students in 'Soap carving, The Movie' will enjoy crafting soap creations in teams and using those creations to direct a movie from the soap world. Soap carving is safe, fun, and very clean. Students will bring home their soap creations and an electronic version of their soap movies will be emailed to you. Class fee- $5. 4 pm 4 pm- Beginning Piano, for gr. 3-5. Instructor: Natalie Martinez. If you are new to the piano keyboard or are just a beginner, this is the place for you. Students will learn basic piano techniques, music theory and get a feel for the piano. We will be holding an informal recital in class at the end of the week. Class fee$3. 4 pm- Beginning Ukulele, for gr. 3-5. Instructor: Steven Butler. In this class students will learn how to hold and strum a ukulele, basic ukulele chords, several folk songs and even a couple of modern songs. Students will also learn how to sing and play at the same time. There will be a performance in front of family and friends at the end of the week. Students may bring their own ukulele, borrow one, or purchase a new ukulele from the camp store. Class fee- $3. 4 pm- Cake Decorating, for gr. 3-5. Instructor: Tara Johnson. In this class, students will learn basic decorating including how to frost and layer a cake, basic piping skills and simple decorations. Class fee$16. 4 pm- Melted Crayons, for gr. 3-5. Instructor: Jody Comte. In this class we will see the many colors of the rainbow come to life! We will be making beautiful canvas artwork and candles with melted crayons. Who knew you could do so much with crayons? Class fee- $7. 4 pm- Sewing Basics, for gr. 3-5. Instructor: Pat Hansen. This class will learn about basic stitching and embroidery techniques as well as some of the culture and etiquette surrounding modern day textile-arts groups (quilters, sewing circles, etc). Students will complete several basic projects during the week including a quilt block, pillow, and denim bag. Each student will need to bring one pair of (clean!) adult jeans which will be cut up and used for projects, and one fat quarter of their choice (available for $1-2 in the fabric section at Walmart). Music class for babies birth to 18 mos of age and parent/caregiver. This class introduces parents and babies to well-loved baby rhymes, bounces, tickles, songs and dances with developmentally appropriate activities. 9 am- Zoo Tunes for Toddlers, for toddlers age 18 months to 3 years old. Instructor: Natalie Steenson. Zoo Tunes for Toddlers! Join our fun-filled animal adventure for toddler 18 mos. to 3 years of age and parent/caregiver. This class will focus on vocal play, singing, steady beat, creative movement and percussive rhythmic playing. $3 class fee for rhythm sticks. Class fee- $3. 10 am- Fin, Feathers & Furs, for children age 3 to 5 years old. Instructor: JoAnn Memmott. Students will explore clay, printmaking, rubbings, and watercolor as they create original art pieces based on fish, birds, reptiles, amphibians and mammals. No experience is necessary as we plan to be creative, have fun and make some art. Some of our projects will be displayed at the end of the week. Class fee- $5. 10 am- I Love My Backyard!, for children age 3 to 5 years old. Instructor: Natalie Steeenson. Children will explore the wonder of their own backyard through singing, dancing, creative movement, storytelling and instrument play. We will make a bug chirping stick, among other fun crafts! Class fee- $3. 11 am- Dr. Seuss World, for children age 3 to 5 years old. Instructor: Natalie Martinez. Thing One and Thing Two will be loose at camp this year! We’ll be drawing, creating and using our imaginations to explore the world of Dr. Seuss. Join the fun as we read Dr. Seuss books and make zany crafts. Class fee$2. 11 am- I Love Mountains!, for children age 3 to 5 years old. Instructor: Natalie Steenson. Children ages 3-5 will playfully travel by train and explore the wonders of the mountains through singing, dancing, creative movement, storytelling and instrument play. We will make a wind chime, among other fun crafts! Class fee- $3.
